Well, here's the thing - is it really a quote if you are simply quoting yourself? Or is it just labeling it as a quote in order to attempt to cover it being an insult and breech of policy? I'm not going to dive into that cesspool of a debate - I'll leave that to the lawyer crew to decide (after all, lawyers seem to love debating unimportant little facts to death, right?) and simply say this - it's not always what you SAY that matters... it's how it's interpreted... in this case, it appears it was taken as an insult, and thus you were punished for it.

Now, unless I'm mistaken, the forum rules aren't enforced per popular vote... so I am left to wonder - what, exactly, is the purpose of this thread?

Though, while we are on the topic of interpretation and semantics... the above comes across as a simple (though unfounded, unenforceable, and utterly vain) threat... just sayin'.

is this an insult ? A quote perhaps ? The boot part . My stepfather use to kick Me in the ass for not working hard enough . You might think I would have a terrible repulsion to your statement because of it . Started when I was a bout 8 an lasted quite awhile until he just beat us with his fists .
Then you throw in how I was made to take his boots off for him in the evenings and put em on in the mornings and the boot you might think even more insulting .

Your in luck. I am not offended . I don't think you will be putting a boot up anywhere on me though . Mikey don't play that

Well, to be fair - the boot part is supposed to be offensive (after all, it is supposed to be a punishment - granted, I'm sure there are some people that would enjoy having firmly-built full-coverage footwear designed to protect against the elements implanted firmly up their rectum, but we'll not get into that little gem of a discussion), but none the less I would believe the statement and its designed intention is obvious enough:

"Be respectful" - respect people, even if you disagree
"or" - do the previous, else the following will happen
"get a boot up yer arse" - get punished

that is correct and it could be pulled off only in a quote thread

you dont get out much do you?

so is the demand for respect under pain of death

correct as in it is simply an attempt at labeling a directed insult as a quote, or correct as in it is actually a quote despite that you are quoting yourself?

A few times daily, given the chance. Unless you consider work and college to not be "getting out", in which case once or twice a day. Though, I fail to see what my personal/social life has to do with the question I posed.

nothing was demanded, nor was there a pain of death - there was a proposal for a new rule that had a request for respect under penalty of punishment (which, now that I have that typed out, saying penalty of punishment seems superfluously redundant...)

Is that phrase something you consider respectful ? My step brother he is prejudiced against the black man . You want to know why . It was one black person that soured him on a whole race of peoples . He was a white kid at a predominantly black school . One day in the 7th grade another kid with pointy toed boots kicked him square in the rectum . He buried his foot deep in his buttock. Right up the anus . He was bruised badly and had problems for months after the event . He is an attorney in Sacramento Ca. My step brother . Went to the same law school Walter right here on this forum went too < Not Sac. State .

So you think it is skate-able by equating the phrase to punishment ?

I am hoping this might give you something to dream about before you go to work . I can only hope

the former and there are no rules why one cannot quote oneself. its funny how that is presented as a given.

    you confound me
    i meant from scifi&fantasy

    oh?
    who proposed it?

See, the difference here is mine is backed by society standards:

    Toby Keith - Angry American
Idiom - statement of encouragement or threat of punishment:
Award for immense stupidity or other debauchery.
    http://www.blackbootpress.com/BootAss.html
In no way does it reference a simple threat or blanket insult.

Now, I do apologize if your childhood and/or social interactions have left you unusually sore to this phrase - however, political correctness is one thing - stepping on egg shells quite another.

Let me ask this - what is the point of a quotation, if not to cite an additional source of wisdom/evidence/point of view? Can you call it a quote if it is not from another source besides yourself?

Ah, my bad - yes, I actually frequent many areas of the forums.

I made the proposal, though unless I am mistaken, while it is not explicitly stated, it is an implied rule to begin with when engaged in social interaction on this (and hopefully many other) websites.

Anyway, if the time for cross-examination is over - I believe my point is made. It is now half-past 4 am and still I have slept not a minute tonight... buh... I'm going to be utterly useless at work tomorrow now XD

No doubt - however, in a place where scientific standard is expected, shouldn't respect be considered an integral part of that - after all, without simple respect, things quickly dissolve into... well, one giant pissing contest to be blunt.

Not quite sure what you mean here- while a bulk of my posts are in sci-fi, I spend a great deal of time reading and reflecting in other areas. I often choose not to insert myself into those conversations because I feel I don't know enough about the subject to be useful in such a conversation (especially true in the physics and math forums.... some of those equations make my head spin)

EDIT - that, and I'd wager something around 3/4 of my total postcount is in a single thread (the ST vs SW thread)

Words cannot hurt anyone but sometimes those who interpert those words take heed to them far to much and often read more into them than they are worth.

I find people who behave like Gustav hard to take seriously, frankly.
    I can't see what's real, what's a bunch of put-on histrionics, and what's a slanted argument.
It does not seem like genuine outrage to me, just posturing...because to me outrage is a thing of compression, like a spring being loaded or a diesel piston crushing the fuel down.

I dunno how many of you saw the thread where the pedo showed up and asked why he couldn't diddle kiddies.

Someone I PM'ed at the time said I did not seem angry as I responded to the guy...which I found interesting, as had I found that person in my physical presence I would have put that sack of human fecal matter in the hospital.

With a giant happy grin on my face.

But...I don't like to lie or put-on for others, not even online...I am who I am, because masking messes with my shaky sense of reality, and what people think of me is less important than keeping mentally moored.

What complete horseshit. You guys don't care about "intent to insult" in the least. What you do care about, is swearing at people. Evidence of this abounds - there is an abundance of clearly insulting material which is allowed and even encouraged so long as it does not contain profanity. Several of the mods - including one JamesR - produce steady streams of such. So much so, that the opportunities to insult people appear to be the primary draw for many posters (and mods). You only swing into action if there is profanity involved in an insult, and it's about 3 years past the time that you owned up to that and stopped pretending that you care about insults, as such.

"Cut your throat and leave you for dead" is an expression too . Fuck you up with base ball bat is another . "Fuck you in the Ass with a broom stick " Is that acceptable phrasing . I like it and see nothing any more wrong than " Boot up your ass "

How bout " I wouldn't fuck your mother with my dogs dick "
That is a common quote in the construction industry and highly acceptable phrasing . All good ! Who would be offended by that ? Not Me . No more than a boot thing .

How about "She is so fine I would eat the corn out of her dads shit" . I heard that quote before . Would anybody find that insulting ( Discussing, I sincerely hope you would not do that )

Are these phrases any less insulting than " Your an Idiot "

Now here is my favorite of all time and you let Me know if it falls into boot kicking or your an idiot ?

Stomp a mud hole in your butt . I am going to stomp a mud hole in your ass if you don't shape up . You like that one and is it sociably acceptable because it has been used by many people ?
