processing of daily activity . It is kind of weird the way it works really . It is like a rewire . That relaxed whimsical state of free thought with out inhibition. Your Mother can't even stop you from the places you go in your dreams. Think about that . She can't save you from your night mare either .

The theories of dreams change over the years. I picture our daily routines like inflating a balloon, and sleep is like deflating the pressure for the next day. As you deflate the pressure, thoughts are turned backwards, so instead of a question, and an incoming answer, you get a random answer heading towards your initial thinking stage. Just a reversal of pressure really. And I love the way that words get close to the truth.. "I slept to relieve the pressure of my daily routine." I find that my ideas often have word association after the fact.. it's like we know everything, but don't want to know too much.

Personally, I think it has to do with short term memories being converted to long term memories in our brain while we sleep...and along the way, some neurons connected to certain memories get fired. Our brains are good at taking fragements, and filling the the gaps..so we perceive in our dreams a continuous story. I think that's why sometimes our dreams are filled will current events with much older events sprinked in...but this is all pure speculation our part.

Has anyone ever wondered what dogs dream about?

THE best theory on the subject - and one that has been around for some time - is that dreams are much like a computer clearing it's cache.

In more detail: The human brain, just like a computer that has been operating for many hours, picks up all sorts of bit and pieces of information and stores them temporarily for possible immediate reuse. Someone's name, an address, a phone number, a new unidentified smell, a familiar or unfamiliar sound, etc, etc, etc. Again, just like a computer cache, if that information is not needed again, it might be readily discarded. But, by the end of the day, like our computer, it will STILL have thousands of bits and pieces of information left over.

Finally, when sleep arrives and the brain is considerably less loaded with work, it begins the process of discarding what it deems as information no longer needed. And while it's going through the sorting/assessing process, our conscious (though asleep) mind gets glimpses of some of those bits and pieces. Naturally, they are disjointed and rarely connected - which is precisely the way most dreams are. They aren't *supposed* to make sense because very little of the information is related to other bits of information. And that's exactly why most dreams make absolutely no sense at all.

Um, I'm a city boy, not terribly well versed in wildlife and all that, but I suspect that's a cat, not a dog.

Technically, your powers of observation are flawless.

It was a double entendre reply to MacGyver's question.

Don't dogs dream about chasing pussy.....cats?

    scheherazade:
Then your anemic "entendre" has irony deficiency.

Being that an "entendre" is, by definition, a literary device used to exploit a single phrase two ways, your picture of a cat only illustrates cat-ness and is entirely self-referential.

You've mistaken the sophistication of wordplay for the snot of a pussy joke.

    On topic:

    What are dreams?
A brain frying in a grease of repression and angst.

The scintillating afterglow of a good shit.

No one on my screen has avatars. Only names.
    I can see video, though.

    So that's not him?

-Dreams seem to be symbolic reprocessing of the day's activities. Or maybe a defragging feature. Or maybe it's random neurogarbage, except a lot of us think in similar symbols when dreaming.

-Not sure why we have dreams
They occur in REM and non REM sleep though, not only during Rapid Eye Movements as previously thought:
    http://wwwi.scottsdalecc.edu/ricker/psy101/readings/Section_2/2-12.html

-We dream of symbolic representations of whatever it is that's on our minds. It tends to be more nightmarish if it's frightening or something we've refused to consider.

-I think we remember some and forget others...since I wake up to pee a lot, I note that I am more likely to remember dreams later on, when I'm not sleeping as soundly.

Welcome back Gedanken...heard a lot about you...

The brain sorts through the days memories held in 'short term memory', evaluates them for importance, stores the important ones and discards the rest. During the process those memories are displayed to our now-passive consciousness in a disjointed manner.

Beyond that function, if there is an issue that needs our attention it will arise in our dream state repeatedly until we act on it while conscious.
