Well, my daughter got a plate spreader today. Bit by bit we will be widening her upper jaw. She says her nose really hurts. I guess it feels like he face is being split

Ha ha. Telling it like it is.

I went through all that shit. My mom was a dental hygienist, so I got all that kind of torture for free. Never had that pleasure of a spreader or head gear. . . none the less, yeah, 95% of the time, they do all the shit for purely cosmetic reasons, and so the doctors, orthodontists, and other specialists can make money. Oh yeah, and because society has become so judgmental. In America, the kids can tell what economic caste you are from by the condition of your teeth. Based on this cue, they know how poorly to treat you in those formative years of Junior high and High school when you have very fragile egos and peer dependent self-esteem. Don't you love what consumerist society does to the individual? Tragic and barbarous really. Destroy the minds and hearts of the poor, eviscerate their dreams, and make sure their kids marry one another. Likewise, make sure they don't ever advance in social status or job opportunities, b/c now we know who it is all right to discriminate against.

    Nice. . . . :bugeye:

You. There's nothing wrong with wanting to approve your physical appearance. You're talking about kids judging other kids...well, duh. Its what kids do in every country in every generation.
Your talking about barbarous treatment and eviscerating dreams. Its just dental work

I just observe how people treat each other based on trivialities. Why do you suppose so much time and resources are spent on such trivialities if it is, as you say, "just dental work."

If it isn't so important, why have it done? If my observations are incorrect, and they are so unfounded? I had it done myself, I went to some of the best universities in my state, most people there had perfect teeth. In the jobs I worked that required degrees, or even among the support staff? Everyone had perfect teeth. Yet. . . when I go to pump my gas, or go to get my sandwich at the deli, or go to have my hair cut? The same isn't necessarily true. The employees there don't have perfect teeth. I wonder what their parents did for a living. . . . In our consumerist and capitalist society, where the individual's value is judged on how much they contribute to the spending/consumption side of the equation, bad teeth are a sign of one not doing their part, or not being able to do their part, and therefor, of little value. (In the same way that not buying the right clothes/car/cell phone are.) Story of Stuff, Full Version

People judge others based on really trivial things. . . You may think I am just talking about kids judging other kids, but people on this forum judge others simply for holding certain beliefs. Sound childish? How else do we judge?

In my opinion, all people should try to not judge at all. The only thing that is necessary, is understanding circumstances. Judging separates, understanding educates and unites.

I will admit myself, my biggest struggle and flaw is judging others, I struggle against it every day. My best friends in high school were the top ten percent of my class, and I was in the honors college at my university. After school, I traveled the country and then I lived in a trailer park and a ghetto, that was far more difficult for me.

Living among the upper middle class is easy, you just have to know how to be an actor, and know what to say, and know what to do. Wear the right clothes, listen to the right music, drive the right car, buy the right phone, etc. Living among the poor and being real, that's far more difficult. First you must be real with yourself before you can be real with others. Bullshit will be called, when bullshit is seen. They have nothing to lose. Polite society doesn't like a scene though. But the laughter is more genuine, the food (when it's home cooked and not processed) tastes better, and there is a thing called solidarity that can be felt in the air. You have a larger family than just your family.

. . . that is an authentic life, who gives a shit if everyone's smile is a little crooked?

I didn't think there was anything so wrong with arauca just putting the truth out there. This is what it's all about. Cool with me.

So, we spend an average of 5k because we are weak creatures, animals that are slaves to our biology that just want to get some action and reproduce . . . it's human nature. Thanks for breaking that down Orleander.

Esotericist, let me just say - if what you said were true, I would be a broken, battered, and useless individual right now... I had zero friends through jr high and maybe 3 through high school... elementary school, yeah, fergetaboudit... instead, it made me learn to step back and think about what people are saying and decide if it was worth getting worked up over.

I like to think those years of hell made me stronger...

Because women would rather push a truck through their poot than have a root canal?
Because mothers who've terrified little girls with their pregnancy stories cringe that tooth pain is worse?

In other words, because tooth pain is hell?

One only wonders at liberated little hicks like you-- and there are millions of you-- that embrace values but not value judgements.

We look up from the sea and find you geniuses stalking back and forth on the shore dying to swim but not wanting to get wet-- muttering choice pearls like:
Tell me how you do this.
How does a sweet little thing like you understand what is worth educating?

Does my brilliant theory on Twat Flavored Bubble Gum deserve as much intellectual space as Kant or the concept of gravity?

How do you educate without judging what's worth educating?

Because the poor would pay a taxi 10 dollars to ride 2 blocks for 7 dollars worth of nicotine.

Because the poor see nothing wrong in moving filth aside to sit in more of it.
Poverty has precious little to do with money.

    Sat.

That's why the majority of them grow up to be cashiers.

    If you say so...
I'd feel like the proverbial bull in the china shop.

The one party I attended thrown by nice liberal actual rich people...it was a potluck held by a friend's church at a *ahem* nice family house (Estimate worth $1 million land value alone. Let's not get into the art on the walls *drool* ).

My observation that I remember after many years is...how fragile and sheltered they all seemed. As if nothing awful had ever happened to them and their social circle...no suicides, homicides, rapes, OD's, deaths from preventable illnesses, getting cut out of your old car, felony prison sentences, stabbings of friends and family...

    ...you know...sheltered...

Like having their car die on the freeway would be a traumatizing experience for them.

I love this cheek word of 'they' as though it were a rare breed of fungus.

I grew up poor-- I experienced no sucide, murder, rape (other than my mental prick ramming gigantic intellectual orifices), overdoses, deaths; hell I even thought Marjuana was a Latina.

You little liberals have gone so far in that muddy little thinking of yours you've actually mucked up "brushing one's teeth" with "elitism".

I was talking about me...well, nobody I knew well got murdered. Although I did meet someone who later went on to stab a guy for fun...
And they were able to get me out through the window of the car, fortunately...
Several of the little neighbor kids are now in state prison. One was dead for a few minutes after rolling a truck, but seems to have come out no more brain-damaged than he went in.
The crackheads moved out...they were white-supremacists....

That's precisely what I meant. You only have to have a handle on thought control and behavior control. Repression of feelings is the key to polite society. Hiding untoward activity, the appearance of impropriety, etc., this is the key to upward mobility. To be middle class and above is essentially to pretend like you are a member of congress. Look and act the part, and keep your record looking clean.

Authenticity and a real life is reserved for the lower classes.

No, you were talking about "them" and how fragile "they" all seemed.

Know why they end up in prison?

Its that abundance of authenticity that put them in jail for raping a 3 year old girl with a Bottlerocket.

Its their freedom to express themselves that got them 10 years to life for stabbing your mother for fuckmoney.

Its not their complete inability for forethought.
Its not their complete lack of self-respect.
Its not their complete inability to breach immaturity.

The only thing separating a dog wallowing in excrement and the moron sitting at home, broke, depressed, and posting on Sciforums is thought control.

Your assumption is that it is the job of some external entity is to educate. . . it is not. It is the responsibility of the individual and their parents to discern what is of use to investigate, and what is not. The fundamentals are always a safe bet though.
I never claimed some of the poor weren't ignorant, but than again, I don't stereotype, some of them are more brilliant than those that attend ivy league schools. You'd be surprised at the going rate of a carton of smokes on the black market.
You're anger and hatred is palpable. You are wrong, it has a great deal to do with resources, the denial of them by the rich. But the real issue here is power, isn't it? Back when slavery was institutionalized, slaves weren't allowed to learn how to read, write, or become educated. Now, they just make sure the poor have mass entertainment, are bombarded with vacuous entertainment, video games, and celebrity magazines that have more sexy images and meaningless articles than educational content, right?
Yeah, they all just sit around, I'm sure.
