I just got a smaller, secondary HD TV. Since I wasn't planning on getting another HD box from Comcast, I got a $30 HD antenna. It actually looks like a tray, 7x7 inches square and flat, about half inch thick.

The best part is that it provides HD programs, for free. All the major networks in HD quality, plus about 10 non-HD local channels and 2 music.

I wasn't even aware until recently that there is HD broadcast through the air, but apparently there is. If you live in a big city, you should be able to pick up very good signal. 80% we watch the major networks anyway, so I could cancel the cable if I wanted too...

Nowadays you can get a nice 32" HD TV under $300, and no cable bills to enjoy 4-5 networks in excellent quality...

I rely on my cable for internet and phone service. We don't, however, subscribe to their television service. I always thought cable TV was redundant and useless, so I've never subscribed.

I'm so fed up with the local and national TV stations that I can't see ever returning to only be able to view them. They are worthless and even more boring than cable is. At least with cable I can watch the history channel, science, discovery, biographies, archeology and a multitude of other interesting and educational subjects and movies as well. On regular TV I won't ever be able to have the choices that I have available to me that are on cable and that's why it isn't going to be any choice of mine to go back to that archaic, boring and dumb type of programming.

Well, if you have watched cable in the last 10 years, the rest is just repetition. At least on network programming there are new shows. The occasional new series can be torrented.

I mean History channel? Just how many Hitler bios can they show?? But hey we also have now Storage wars, whatever the fuck is...

Again, the point is, that you can have very good quality for free. If nothing else, you can watch Sunday football games, and you don't have to go to the bar.

Speaking of football, the game is on...

They don't even show WWII docs on History anymore. It's just woo like "Ancient Aliens" or reality shows. Storage wars is about people who go around to self-storage places and bid at the auctions they have for abandoned units...and what they find inside. Not really my cup of tea. I do watch "Top Shot" which is a shooting contest that follows the "survivor" model. I do like the "Speed" channel and ESPN, as I'm a race fan, and like getting the F1, Indycar, and NASCAR races...plus Monday Night Football.

When I lived by myself...I never had cable..for like 10 years. I didn't think it was worth it, as I don't really watch much TV. My biggest complaint about the cable channels is that show sooo many repeats...they even repeat the same show the same night. If I get another place by myself, I will probably go back to just regular tv.

I agree with Cosmic, I will keep my cable, at least for the foreseeable future.

I am the tv watcher in this house, enjoy Comedy Central, SciFi, ESPN etc. Yeah, there is a lot of repetition, but I don't spend that much time watching so I miss most of that. While I do watch standard channel stuff too, I would be bummed if that was all I had.

You won't be able to watch NCAA though...

You didn't get the point. If I watch 80% of the time those 5 channels and I can get them for free in HD, why should I pay $60 per month for the rest of the 20% entertainment???

If NCAA is college football, there is plenty of it on the 5 major networks...

Wow, $60.00 for cable television. I'll stick with my NetFlix and local/national channels. I simply don't watch that much television. When I did have cable--many years back--I mostly watched cable access.

OH...are you talking about in the US?

In Canada, you only get NCAA if you have cable.

Cancelled my cable ages ago. Don't watch that much TV as it is, so the 30+ channels available over the airwaves is more than enough.

I watch stuff online now. Even the new Walking Dead show and Monday Night Football streams online for free.

Well, the quality of sport programs online (live) is horrendous. You are better off with the $30 antenna...

Hi, my name is Spanglo, I'm a TV'holic, and I've been commercial free for 2 years.

+1 the sports streams are horrible quality. If you don't mind waiting, you could always download a HD version of the event the following day, from any number of sources.

Well, using the antenna is not commercial free, but it is only a one time cheap investment, compared to a monthly fee.

Well, that's true. The US's Monday Night Football live sports via CBS's silverlight stream is HD and smooth with a broadband connection, but most other live streams are still SD or jumpy. I don't watch enough TV to care; and 995 of what I do watch isn't live anyway.

So if you primarily watch live TV, or don't have broadband, or live somewhere where the legal online streaming offerings are terrible (as they were here until this year, really) then online wouldn't yet work for you.

I only use my cable company for internet and telephone services. They seem pretty decent in that department. For TV, I never got what I paid for. When something goes wrong, you get some guy from another country and can't t/s properly. Mostly due to the fact that they only have pictures of the hardware we use. I have nothing against going overseas for technical support, but at least train them properly by showing them actual hardware, not pictures or slides.
