The next anti-Al Qaeda guy is in Syria. But Assad will take longer to fall, I think.

I'm not sure what "promise of hope" Gadhafi ever nurtured. He was a megalomaniac from the word go and wanted to be the pan-Arab leader from before the age of 27. He was one of the last of the "communists" i.e. those who were impressed with the Russian movement and wanted to apply it to pan-Arabia and like all the Arab leaders who were secular, this point put him beyond the pale in western politics.

Its the end of an era with his death - but as long as there is oil dependency, I don't think we can herald the beginning of a new one.

The "guy" probably had more blood on his hands than Al Qaeda.

He wasn't a good "guy". He was a despotic dictator who led through fear and murder and Libyans have a right to not want him as a leader anymore.

Libya at the moment, looks like it will be a case of out of the hot frying pan and straight into the fire.

I was being ironic, because of Awlaki and his 16 year old son who merited death by drone with a casualty list of...zero.

    But who's counting?
Rebel leaders put Libya death toll at 50,000

No doubt the man was a thug, but even he is entitled to a fair trial .. if not, where does this road end? Bin Laden, Awlaki ... it leads to barbarism.
He would have received the punishment he deserved either way,
Those that lied and conspired to open the door for the Iraqi invasion.

Have to wonder if they would want to turn themselves in after this...

Me thinks we have been down that road and are residing there for quite some time now.

And the crowd's bloodlust would have been fulfilled.

I understand their rage. But I wonder if anything will actually change now? It would keep me up at night knowing that I was just like the person I had put so much effort, blood and lives into hunting down, only to then do to him what he and his troops had been doing to others for how many years now?

    Yes.. Again.. Which ones?

They say he was accidentally killed, not executed.

...with what appeared very much to be a bullet between the eyes, received in the ambulance on the way to hospital for the stomach shot.

I gotta agree with SAM on that.

Some of my strongest childhood memories are of Soviet MIG's doing their 5 times a day dry strafe runs over the SAC base we lived on in sub - Saharan Africa. They were based in Libya. He has been out there making trouble for others my entire adult life. The red stars on the bottom of their wings are burned into my memory quite well, thanks.

He joins the ranks of others like Pol Pot et al that the world is likely better off without. Blowing up civilian aircraft with a smuggled bomb rates the death sentence IMHO. That is as cowardly as shooting an unarmed person after beating them.

Personally I think it's good closure. Wouldn't they have loved to pose for pictures with Hitler's corpse?

    Good closure. Yes.
Similar to the death of Mussolini.
    Yes, it does seem fitting.
I'm glad it happened that way.
As an evil dictator you should be ripped limb from limb by the people you victimised.
As an instinctive act of course, not as a sentence.

I detest these show trials where they are tried by people barely better than themselves.

He was a Rock and Roll style icon though.
Hate him, or hate him a lot, he oozed charisma.

What is rather odd to me is that this "revolution " took over 40 years to happen. I guess those people that were wanting to keep him in power had enough of him and wanted a new dictator to control the country. That's right, there will be another dictator put into power there after all is said and done. Out with the old in with the new, same old game with a new name.

    @Asguard

    The ICC.
Another bunch of local opportunists who will sell their people's resources to the Good Men of the West for personal gain.

But perhaps you are right. We will see. Let's hope so.
They could be different this time.

Nope, lots of his people stuck with him...hell he nearly put down the rebellion until NATO started bombing him.

Basically, the people reached a breaking point and found an opportunity to springboard off the revolutions of Eqypt and Syria.

Has it ever changed in the past? I don't recall Libya being the baston of democracy ever.

People have always fought for resources.
    It's human nature.

African and Arabian countries are of little interest to the West unless they have resources that we want.
If we do want them, then like men from every other age, we invade their lands and subdue them.

What's all this "We're doing it to give people freedom" rubbish?
We are doing it to serve our own ends.
It's not what the West is doing which offends me so much, as their lying and hypocrisy.

Personally, I believe that we should reject man's caveman past, and adopt civilisation.
We should abide by International Law, and not invade countries which are not a threat to us.
Leave countries to settle their own problems. If they have resources, we should trade with them as sovereign nations, and let them set their own price on them.

If the Middle East had been allowed to set their own price for oil from the 70's onwards, the West would already be free from dependency on oil.
The Oiligarchs would have been too greedy, and we would have developed other technologies.

If the money spent on wars in the Middle East had been spent on scientific progress, where would we be now?

The whole World is run by short-term minded Neanderthals with their main focus on their own back pockets.
How do these people constantly get into power?
It's what appeals to Democratic voter and Fascist alike.
    The Powerful Man.
    God help us.

Libya under Gaddafi had no debt, one the highest literacy rates in Africa and the Arab World, the Libyans are a well educated people. Gaddafi was very upfront and abrasive with other Arab leaders - because he knew their nature, and in Africa? he is still very popular. Blacks love him. He used to pay for thousands of African Muslims to perform the Hajj pilgrimage, used to fund Mosques etc.

Guys like Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein don't just pop out of thin air, they aren't sons of the devil, they are a product of their environment. There will be more like them waiting on the sidelines. You've got to laugh at the Western media heralding this as a massive victory for democracy and human-rights, just so full of sh.t
