I suppose most of you have heard about the trial of Amanda Knox (et al, but largely the chick) for the murder of Meredith Kercher. The most recent development of the case is that Knox has been acquitted.

Without expressing support for one verdict or the other (although I may play devil's advocate) do you - yes, you, humble SF goer-by - think she did it? Was she involved? If so, what role did she play? And so forth. Or was it a huge travesty of justice? Right now I'm just mulling over the wiki entry. Is it exhaustive? Has anyone been following the case?

Edit: oops. Spelled name wrong in title. Oh well.

This is just slightly insensitive don't you think?
There is an edge, and this goes over it, I think.
    Other people may feel differently.

I said this already in another post about this subject, I don't know all of the facts about this case only what the media has told us. Without more pertinent information I can't give an opinion one way or another. I know many have their opinions but they base them on only bits and pieces of hand me down information. I'd rather hold judgment until I could review the case in its entirety which won't be possible.

    My advice..

Ask an admin or senior mod to move it to EM&J for starters.

Secondly, there is at least one other thread discussing this already. You can have too much of a good thing.

    How so?

    Fair question.
The only people who might be personally offended are the family and friends of Meredith Kercher, and they aren't likely to be looking at sciforums.

But if I voted in your Poll I'd feel as though I was using the death of the girl for entertainment.

It's not terrible, but I think it goes over the boundaries of good taste.
Maybe I'm wrong. Just ignore me.

Well, I don't mean it as entertainment. I'd sort of studiously ignored the case until now, but became curious. As you will, however.

I don't think she was the murderer, but I don't think events unfolded as she has stated. She's changed her story too often, and some statements just don't sit right. I think at least she is guilty of perverting the course of justice, especially initially with the allegations against her former employer.

Then you might want to rethink your 'step right up' style of your OP.

There are a lot of things about this case that don't sit well.

We are talking about a murder trial and the media and prosecutors were more focused on painting Knox as some sort of sexual predator and into satanic ritualistic sex, in a strictly Catholic country. The first images of Knox after the murder was video footage of her and her boyfriend hugging and kissing. There was a bias against her before her original trial even began.

Having said that, her behaviour and constant retraction of statements and changing her story do not sit well either. Too many things do not add up.

This case had turned into tabloid fodder and it was impossible to get the actual facts of the case as a result.

I bow to your greater experience in carnival entertainment. Thanks for the comments, but I suppose they should go in the other thread.

I thank you. Might as well just close it, the case being the case.

Voted "no" because I've never heard a plausible motive presented for her to commit such a crime.

you being an expert in slander and whatnot...

In February 2011, Knox's parents, Curt Knox and Edda Mellas, were indicted on charges of criminal slander as a result of an interview published by the Sunday Times in 2009, in which they stated that their daughter "had not been given an interpreter, had not received food and water, and had been physically and verbally abused" by police officers after her arrest. Knox and Mellas had sought to have charges dismissed, on the grounds that there was no intent. The trial of Knox and Mellas was adjourned until 24 January 2012. (wikishit)

    ...is that slanderous?

Police officers are suing Knox's parents, Edda Mellas and Curt Knox, accusing them of defamation for their description of how Amanda was treated after her arrest in the murder of Meredith Kercher.

    police officers? a department?

tiassa is right. italy is a circus

i find these 2 threads facinating. Concidering that in the US you can find a judgment to surport ANY position and programs like the "innocence project" show the rates of innocent people in US jails, the US has one of the biggest incaceration rates in the world per head of population and you refuse to abolise the death penelty INSPITE of what project innocence has shown. And you critise another country?????????

Oh! But the pain will not stop! *weeps*

Whether or not Italy is a circus - and I've heard some very unpleasant rumours about misappropriation in Italian science - and while unusual, I suppose it is legal for any body to sue another under reasonable grounds. Not maybe too ethical, but can they legally be said no?

    Anyway, hideously OT.

How about we try the first round of evidence? Footprints, say? Any objections? Not moving at lightspeed on this thread: sue me.

Well, that's fine, and probably hypocritical. Still, I think we're only really interested in this case per se, or at least I am. I really want to know if she did it. I suspect not, but it's a morass. (Although quadra probably has the right of it.)

Strawman, unless you can find someone who both criticizes this particular case and feels that the US justice system is just peachy. I don't see anyone here speaking as Supreme Representative of US Justice or anything.

That said, there's a distinct possibility that the Italian justice system is qualitatively more fucked up than the American one, whatever the latter's problems.

And there's also the basic point that you're engaging in a cheap rhetorical ploy. Even if the US system is vastly worse, that's no particular reason for anyone (even Americans) to give Italy a pass. Are we supposed to give Italy a pass until such a time as they exhibit problems that are unequivocably worse than anything anywhere in the world?

I find your blabber offtopic and boring...

Now going back to the topic, a few years ago I was pretty sure she did it, but since some evidence (bleach) was disproven. just for the sake of advocate diaboli, I voted yes.
She did have something to do with it, even if she wasn't the murderer. A very good account of the Italian Police's stupidity is the case of The monster of Florenze. The same prosecutor as here...

First of all, those aren't "people." They're trolls.

Second of all, I don't see any of such in this thread.
