A more interesting question would be: can you spot a serial killer?

I have heard that 80% or so serial killers are from the US, about 15% from the UK, and the rest 5% is from the rest of the world (I can't remember exactly though, I read about that long time ago). Also, they're mostly white males, age between 20-30. I know 2 serial killers from my home country (Indonesia), their nicknames are Datuk (already executed in a death penalty) and another one (Ryan Jombang) is soon to be executed. The first one was a sorcerer (killed some 40 women to get their saliva) and the other one is a gay (killed mostly men). Can't make a statistics out of 2 person, though.

    Here is one quiz:

Programming language inventor (lol) or serial killer?
    http://www.malevole.com/mv/misc/killerquiz/

    I'll take this quiz...

Ok, I got 8/10 (but I've read about one already, so I noticed him, so that makes it 7/9):

    An interesting article:

Do You Know How to Spot a Serial Killer?

    From the link:

One study in particular, conducted and reported on by R. Ressler, A. Burgess, and J. Douglas (authors of "Serial Killer Characteristics") provided some of the following distinctive traits amongst adult killers:
    • white male, typically between 25 and 35 years of age
    • "moderate" intelligence
    • usually with an IQ of 105-120
    • poor performance in school (usually behavioral issues, prefer solitude over lots of social activity)
    • difficulty in maintaining work

The study conducted by Ressler, Burgess, and Douglas reveals that many killers grew up with some sort of deviant sexual behavior. Moreover, many are found to have wet the bed, or to have taken an interest in killing/maiming small animals. While these activities are rarely discovered by others during adulthood, some of the "traits" make their way into the killers' adult behavior.

Serial killer, Andrei Chikatilo, of Russia, murdered over 50 women and children between the years of 1978 and 1990. In many of the cases, he abducted his victims in places which were heavily populated. In retrospect, some people even recalled seeing him at various crime scenes.

Some tips for women from the link (to avoid the serial killers):

OVER-ATTENTIVENESS : It's a wonderful thing to attract the attention of a man you find alluring. But women should be wary if their newest love interest has too much interest in the very beginning of a friendship.

HOW'S THE FAMILY? : When getting to know a new man, take hints from your conversations. You don't have to dig too deeply into a man's past to get a feel for what his family life was like. Does he speak of his parents? You should be suspicious of "abnormal" relationships with Mom, or frequently mentioned violent episodes with Dad. Listen also, to the way that he speaks of friends and other associates of his. Be wary if he never speaks of friendships with others, and spends excessive amounts of time alone.

BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS: Many serial killers scope out the locations from which they plan to abduct their victims. In many cases, they study a location for weeks or even months, simply to determine the best course of action. The victims they choose are those who are usually extremely familiar with the area (like stores and other public places). And because of this, the victims take for granted that they can be easily abducted and/or killed. The best thing to do is to take a really close look at where you are at all times. Be cognizant of where you park your vehicle. When in supermarket parking lots, try to park directly next to one of the shopping cart buggy "return kiosks." First of all, it will be difficult for someone traveling in another vehicle [like a van] to sneak up on you and abduct you. Furthermore, you will have less distance to walk while transfering groceries from your cart to your vehicle.

BE A PEOPLE-WATCHER: You should be wary of the person who, when you look up---appears to have already been eyeing you. Anyone who has sat down in an airport, awaiting the departure or arrival of a flight, understands the fine art of people-watching. Not necessarily considered "spying" per se, people-watching can simply be defined as paying acute attention to hidden details. Go with your gut feeling. If someone strikes you as strange, (even if they look "normal")---there may be a valid reason why you should keep your distance.

WALK WITH "PURPOSE": It is true that most predators, serial killers or not, will not prey on someone who walks with "purpose." This means that one's head should be held high; and steps taken should be deliberate and firm. People who appear to be daydreaming, or otherwise lost in thought are prime targets for all sorts of crimes.

REPORT STRANGE FINDINGS: While all suspicious activity does not warrant police interference, it is important to report any strange, or unsuitable behavior. Millions of adolescents and teenagers are abducted and killed each year. Some of their deaths could have been avoided, had people in the communities in which they lived, reported some of the weird behaviors they noticed.

I got 7 of ten, but I knew son of sam...

I'd have to see them move and talk, I think, honestly... I pick up a lot from facial expression and body language.

@ Kira...those tips are good to avoid any kind of predator.
You know, be wary, scan your environment when outside, know where the exits are in public places, who's coming and going, that sort of thing.

I got to meet an ex-merc a few weeks ago because I shared his keen interest in having my back to a wall, and eyes towards both exits...

    Ok.

Btw, in the article that I quoted above, one of the traits of many serial killers is that they have found to wet the bed. I wonder why is that? I can relate that people who torture small animals or incite property burning tend to become serial killers (or vice versa), but what is the relation between wetting a bed and serial killing? This wasn't the first time I read about that. In one of the novels by Thomas Harris (who writes Silence of the Lamb, Hannibal, etc) and somewhere in movies, they seem to wet the bed, some are even until they reach adult ages. This is probably only a statistical coincidence, or could there be any scientific reasons for that?

Bedwetting, particularly late bedwetting, is a sign of child sexual abuse. So is torturing animals and setting fires...although, it has to be said, not a positive sign of child sexual abuse.

It's just that often children who are abused sexually may do these things.

Non-abused children may have these problems too, but they are likely indicators.

Apparently the bedwetting, torturing of animals and setting fires, when found all together in an individual, are considered to indicate well-nigh incurable sociopathy?

So...if a child has been tortured physically and/or sexually from a very young age, and lacks empathy, they might end up a serial killer? I'd guess it. Serial killers kill as a power trip, right? Being a severely abused child is the ultimate confirmation of one's worthlessness and helplessness...I could see wanting to go out and negate that violently.
But I think that would involve perhaps psychosis (Son of Sam) or severe malignant narcissism. Very possibly on top of being an abuse victim. That'd be my guess, you guessed it, pulled out of my semi-educated butt.

The real issue is probably how they got treated when they wet the bed.

Well yes, but realistically as a woman you have a higher chance of getting struck by lightning than hooking up with a serial killer. The big worry should be hooking up with someone that will trap you into a long boring unhappy life the leads to an ugly slow old age death.

Yup, here, for example (from a study by FBI), among 14 characteristics of serial killers, over 60 percent of the serial killers wet their beds beyond the age of 12. The thing is, in normal population, studies place adult bedwetting rates at between 0.5% to 2.3%.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Studies say that as children, serial killers are abandoned by their fathers and raised by domineering mothers. Maybe when they wet the bed the mum beat or ridicule them, so they kept a lot of angers. I've seen it sometimes in Indonesia, there were many occasions where babies cried on mum laps in public places (such as in train), then the mums beat them to stop the crying :-( As a kid, I also had a neighbor, a small boy, who often got beaten by her mum using stick when he didn't behave well. It was very heartbreaking.

About the bed wetting, I have a friend in uni, some 10 years ago, who used to be a sleepwalker. He told us that he often made the bed wet because he said he dreams in his sleep, and in his dream sometimes he felt like he went to bathroom to pee, but he woke up wet (actually he urinated on the bed). But that friend was completely normal and social.

I copy paste that tips not to warn women actually, but to share the article about how the serial killers usually operate, like how they pick their victims, etc.

Has anybody watched that TV series "Criminal Minds"? This series has run for a lot seasons and each episode pretty much shows a different way that serial killers pick their victims. Just about anyone can be a victim of a determined serial killer. But being aware of your surroundings and what you are doing at any given time might help a little.

I haven't watched the series yet, is it good? I don't have many channels in my German TV, I have very few American programs.

Sure, a crime can happen not just because there is a motive, but also because there is an opportunity (unplanned).

If you have good band width, hook your TV up to the Internet through your computer system and subscribe to a service that allows you to watch movies or subscribe to Netflix or Blockbuster and have the DVD's mailed to you. I use Netflix and nothing beats watching a TV series without commercials from the first episode of the first season to the last in order without missing any episodes. When you order TV series on DVD they usually come with 4 episodes to a DVD.

Ah! The first kill of a serial killer. Yes that can be unplanned an serve to set the course of how all future victims will be selected by the serial killer in question.

Welcome, keep it in mind for when you can use the info. Who knows maybe you will have a friend that you can visit that likes to watch these kind of things. But whatever, take care of your education as your first priority.

No, I was saying that the sexual abuse causes the problem.
The abuse can cause the control problems either psychologically...or worse, physically through tissue damage to the child.

Although sometimes the child is then abused for peeing the bed too, I'm sure.
Or whatever. Really sadistic parents don't particularly need much of an excuse except the child is there and smaller than they are...and their bones make a nice crunch when they break or something.
