I am currently in a discussion in the General Science and Technology forum. In this thread there has been several calls for moderation. Tristan is listed as the only moderator of this forum, but his last activity was way back in May and his last post was more than a year ago...and he has posted 10 times since '08.

If a mod leaves the forum, and neglects his responsibility as a mod..how long does it take for a suitable replacement to be installed? Why aren't current mods that are active given more than one sub-forum to look out for?

It's takes until we get around to it to install a new moderator. We don't always immediately remove inactive moderators either, since sometimes they come back. There's no hard and fast policy on this kind of thing. We tend to play it by ear.

Also, it's worth saying that just because a subforum doesn't have a dedicated moderator, it doesn't mean that there's nobody to moderate it. Any supermoderator or admin can moderate any subforum.

There's also no rule about moderators only getting one subforum each. If they're willing to take on the extra workload and they are well enough qualified, moderating multiple subforums is fine.

On the particular matter of the General Science and Technology subforum, Trippy has kindly offered to moderate that forum in addition to what he is already doing.

So, please welcome Trippy as a new moderator of GS&T.

One other matter: I think we need a couple or a few more moderators. For example, Physics & Math currently has no active, dedicated moderator. Chances are I'll be gauging interest from the general membership on such matters soon.

No mathematics-based forum needs a moderator. All you have to do is to require that every submission be in the form of a rigorous proof.

Math, unlike psychology, sociology, or anthropology, is an exact science, right?

On a serious note, how can a reader, whether he's registered or not, find out who the moderator is for any given forum?

And to ensure that the rules are adhered to requires a moderator, no?

    No.

For a mathematics forum, the submissions would be made to a jury, just as if they were being submitted to a professional journal. The jury would read the submission, line-by-line, and if they had any questions, they would send an e-mail back to the poster, asking for a clarification. The submission would only appear on the math thread when the jury was satisfied that the proof was rigorous enough.

    E.g. a group of mods.

Yeah, so you're expecting that the maths forum here would consist only of new work by mathematicians?
Not people asking for help, clarification, elucidation?

You, my friend, have no sense of humor. Take my advice and find one somewhere.

A good place to start is by having a quiet chat with people who are paid to make others laugh, like comics, clowns, and the writers for humorous children's books and movies (not the purely educational movies that somber parents want their kids to watch or the books that are available in elementary school libraries).

And you make assumptions about me.
I hope to cure you of that if you're planning on staying around.

Actually Dy has a wonderful sense of humor and has been making me laugh for years (even when I'm the butt of the joke

)..chalk up one more thing you've been wrong about on this forum.

Oooo....0 for 2....Just because math or physics is the subject, it doesn't stop spammers, flamers, trolls, or woo woo's from posting their crap.

Hush! You're not supposed to mention the naked pics of me. And you're not supposed to laugh at them either!

Oops, you're getting off-topic, unless of course, you're an inactive moderator.

Off-topic in that I replied directly to something you wrote? Yup.

    In a manner of speaking.

Ummm...Benny...you're the one who started the off-topic discussion of Dy's humor...and once again, are attempting to teach those that don't need to be taught:

(fyi: Dy used to be a mod)

Mods: Since my OP of this thread has been answered and the problem has been solved, this thread really doesn't need to remain open.

Unless I happen to mention that even an ex-moderator can sometimes lack a sense of humor.

That would be like putting Charlie Sheen in charge of hooker and blow factory.

Exactly. And what would be wrong with that?
