How long before an inactive mod is removed?

I am currently in a discussion in the General Science and Technology forum. In this thread there has been several calls for moderation. Tristan is listed as the only moderator of this forum, but his last activity was way back in May and his last post was more than a year ago...and he has posted 10 times since '08.

If a mod leaves the forum, and neglects his responsibility as a mod..how long does it take for a suitable replacement to be installed? Why aren't current mods that are active given more than one sub-forum to look out for?

No mathematics-based forum needs a moderator. All you have to do is to require that every submission be in the form of a rigorous proof.

Math, unlike psychology, sociology, or anthropology, is an exact science, right?

On a serious note, how can a reader, whether he's registered or not, find out who the moderator is for any given forum?

No.

For a mathematics forum, the submissions would be made to a jury, just as if they were being submitted to a professional journal. The jury would read the submission, line-by-line, and if they had any questions, they would send an e-mail back to the poster, asking for a clarification. The submission would only appear on the math thread when the jury was satisfied that the proof was rigorous enough.

You, my friend, have no sense of humor. Take my advice and find one somewhere.

A good place to start is by having a quiet chat with people who are paid to make others laugh, like comics, clowns, and the writers for humorous children's books and movies (not the purely educational movies that somber parents want their kids to watch or the books that are available in elementary school libraries).
