I have been communicating with horses for years. It's all body language, eye contact and subtle movements, reinforced minimally with voice. The horses also have a range of body language cues, and use a certain amount of vocalization. Dogs, especially some of the more focused breeds such as border collies, are incredibly communicative via body language. Perhaps you would share a few more details to indicate which direction you would like this thread to go?
cats also learn fast the way of language you use for example you make a movement, to say, not now, later, don't go ( about food effcorse) and the sound to call for food as everyone do also you can learn the vocalisation of your cats by time (or you can google them) there's also the body language, like when a cat make weird sounds (frrr frr...) or lick you, or blink for you, etc..

They've been doing that since the beginning of recorded history. Watch a shepherd communicate with his sheepdogs or an expert dressage rider communicate with their horse. They've done that with primates and sign language (and occasionally some spoken language.) They can indeed communicate, albeit at a very simple level (3-4 year old human equivalent.)

I've thought of a board for dogs with descriptive images/photos for the dog to point at or paw at if they want it. For example, a photo of a unique object in the park (like a statue) if it wants to go to the park, a photo of a particular food (like a dog cookie) that it might want, a photo of a neighbor's dog that it might want to visit, a photo of your car if it wants to go for a ride, etc. I've never heard of such a thing, but it seems like it would work. The video about performing dogs makes me wonder if dogs could be given miniature walkie-talkies so they could communicate with humans from a distance. The dogs would have an earpiece if necessary (like dog actors for TV or movies). Humans would talk to the dogs to direct them, and dogs could bark back to the humans (and with their different kinds of barks they could indicate uncertainty, danger, etc).
Many animals hear at levels either to high or to low for humans to understand. Then there are those which can hear regular sounds that humans can. As scheherazade said that she already understands some of what horses are saying or gesturing it remains an ongoing study to really be able to just understand what animals are up to. Whatever your experiments are I do hope that they take the time needed to fully comprehend many of the gesticulations and mannerisms that are characteristic of animals to try to understand them better.

Alexander Graham Bell may be the first to try to make a dog "speak" (poor dog), but found the canine vocal track articulation too limited. Several primates have learned sign language: Nim, Washoe, and Koko.
