Interesting. Those who suffer from Combat PTSD never shake with a pistol in their hands, that's they're comfort zone, where they are best equipped and feel the most confidence. They don't hesitate and that's what get's them in trouble when they are out of service usually months and years after they are out of active service.

Obviously he is as his father said as much. He didn't say his child wanted to 'kill people' he said his child wanted to kill 'osamas', you know terrorist targets. Those by the way are legitimate targets, but he's only 14 and he still doesn't know what he wants from his life nor does he know what it means to be in a war situation. Jmpet is no idiot, he says he thinks his child 'might' be marine material BUT its not what he would have hoped for for his child. Children grow into their own beings and eventually make their own decisions, if his child continues to desire military service by the time he's 18 then there isn't much his father can do about it except PREPARE HIM both mentally, ethically, politically and philosophically, education and information is the only thing he can do to serve his child and after that if his child decides to join anyway his dad's choices are support or disapproval Nothing more nothing less.

Lot's of young boys say they want to join this and that for whatever reasons, many times its a warrior role or a warlock role or a hero role, nothing abnormal there. Your son said he wanted to grow up to be a rocket. Do you have him in therapy now for desiring to be a lethal weapon? Don't be such a Western Oprah-esque bloody daytime drama queen. This kid is only 14 and he can change his mind in no time and decide that some other exciting notion is his destiny. Stop pretending that young boys with a lust for warrior glory are somehow 'sick' when its really only what young boys and men do until they understand the nuances better. He doesn't know anything about war, nor will he nor can he, until he's taken the point of entering the life. Even more poignant he probably doesn't even understand himself as yet to know what he will become, could be he'll be the run of the mill educated desk executive or maybe even a scientist who creates the newest lethal weapon. But you wouldn't worry if your son decided to enter the sciences and create something completely detrimental to the human race would you? You don't call Einstein a bloody thug or executioner do you for fathering the atom bomb? What if he went into politics and turned into a Kissinger? Or a doctor who becomes a Kerovorkian? Bunch of bloody hypocrites you all are! Pretending as if being a marine is ultimately destructive as opposed to other professions. Looks like international bankers did a right good job of disenfranchising thousands into foreclosures. Do you worry that they may go into business or wall street? HYPOCRITES!!!!

Now you have a kid who's in a phase of hero-self-projection which could pass or turn him into a real soldier. And you are all here like a bunch of dumb-assess passing judgement on what you don't even know may come to pass. But if it does come to pass its not the worst that can happen and I hope his father would support him for the man wants to become knowing he's given him the qualities of a man who would have good character no matter what profession.

vietcong were very skilled. even vets who fought have noted that repeatedly. there was more hand to hand and ground warfare back then.

as for iraq etc, this is a different time and war is played out a bit differently than before which includes a lot of technology. if you have way better weapons and technology as well as larger forces, it's a foregone conclusion.

As I said very early in this thread, his vocation is a good thing not a bad one.
But he needs more experience of life.
