Maybe we should have a thread for this? It's pretty special! Would you like me to move these two posts to their own thread? There are probably more, but it will take me a year to find them all. In theory I love Throbbing Gristle. But I'll be damned if their entire output isn't more-or-less unlistenable. That Heathen Earth one you have there - the cover quote is from a Charles Manson song, IIRC, and also features into the Nine Inch Nails classic "Terrible Lie" - is the only album of theirs I ever actually owned. Eh? I can't believe what I'm reading here--unlistenable? I was never a big fan of Psychic TV, but TG were (are) brilliant. So what say you of Current 93 and David Tibet's output?
I can't say I've ever listened to enough to advance an informed opinion, embarassingly. I tend to do more Einsturzende Neubauten or Autechre or old Cabaret Voltaire when I'm in the mood for more avante-garde industrial stuff... but the more I think on it, the more Current93 stands out as a notable gap in my background there. Also, don't get me wrong: TG has their moments. It's just that I always seem to find their work more interesting in theory, than in actual listening.
Cabaret Voltaire's "official" bootleg from '79(?) is brilliant--the one with the cover of V.U.'s "Here She Comes Now"--and Neubauten, while occasionally turning out a piece of crap have managed to remain faithful to their "roots" whilst evolving nonetheless over the decades. Current 93's ouvre is quite varied--and extensive--I would strongly recommend checking out Earth Covers Earth, Thunder Perfect Mind, and Black Ships Ate The Sky. All of these are more recent--late 90's and 00's--and less industrial than his prior work though. I've got some personal issues with Tibet however: I've been friends with his partner/girlfriend (Andrea Degens--her project is called Pantaleimon) for some years and he briefly championed my own work, until he decided that I wasn't just the right sort of "freak" that he tends to fetishise. Yeah, I think they tend to succeed more with their live stuff. Curiously, their best studio work is their most mainstream album--20 Jazz Funk Greats. I don't think they really caught on to how to make a great un-polished and under-produced studio album.
