Why You Can’t Escape the Internet

    I'm not sure this is the right place for this subject. After all everybody on this forum is somewhat biased in favor of the Internet. At least I know I am. Please visit the link below and then take a little time to respond.

    Because of the Internet the world is a much smaller place. Language translators make world wide communications simple and easy for everyone and Internet business has a world wide market. I'm very sure there's no going back, especially for the young people growing up with the Internet.

    I can't figure out what their point is. Obviously we're living at the beginning of the internet era and it comes with the same kinds of problems that any new technology brings. But it's hardly in a class with the early days of the Industrial Revolution, with farmers moving to the city, working in sweatshops while their wives sat around snorting laudanum and their children were running with street gangs--or however Dickens portrayed it.
    And that is inarguably good. On the balance, people are less hostile to people they know. Our instincts are programmed that way, as a pack-social species.

    As I have often posted, look at all the Americans who wept over the real-time cellphone videos of Neda Agha Soltan dying in the street in Tehran. From that point forward no American will ever support a President or Congress declaring war on Iran. In fact the only people they're bombing right now live in remote places like Afghanistan where there are no internet connections.
    I'm one of the oldest people here, and I don't want a way back! I wish the internet had existed when I was a kid. My parents moved us out into the middle of the m*****-f***ing Arizona desert; it should be a crime to make a child grow up in such a vapid environment. It would have been so wonderful to have a link to the real world, dangers and all. I was a bookish kid and I would have settled for just having Wikipedia.

    I'm with you on this issue. As a kid I grew up walking distance from the beach just 10 miles south of LAX California, so you have my sympathy for being stuck in the desert. But at my current age I like Tucson AZ better than Washington state.

    He is absolutely right, you know. There is no escaping it if you want to 'fit in'.
    People are completely addicted to their stupid iPhones, twitter, facebook, etc and expect you to be like them.

    Each new generation averages a higher IQ than the previous. The new up and coming generation will be smarter than we are. And a big reason will be the internet, which stretches the human mind.

    How the hell can this be a bad thing?

    Fraggle Rocker doesn't think the Internet is in the same class as the industrial revolution. He may be right about that, but I think he has it backwards and that the Internet will change the world more than any other revolution ever has, and for the better. Just in this one little forum we are interacting with and sharing ideas with people living all over this planet. Just as little as 10 or 15 years ago that would not have been an easy thing to do. Also world business makes war almost obsolete. Which country wants wants a war with it's customers. Scientists world wide are are working together as never before. It's just getting started but Internet education is going to make what we have now look down right primitive.

    I don't think this article was trying to imply that the Internet is a bad thing, but to show how dependent we already are on it.

    My wife had the thought that people might start having different ideological wars...as people suddenly find out people don't think like they do.

    I do remember reading an article about a battle in Indonesia in which the soldiers and rebel faction were sniping at each other...and text-messaging insults as well...

    Yes I'm familiar with text insults, and getting someone to text you while driving might be a safe way of killing them.

    I'm not saying that the internet is a bad thing, because I think it has huge potential, yet this 'priority' does set my nerves on edge.

    One negative that I have observed since the arrival of the internet to the Yukon is that it is increasing the existing divide between those with the skill set to use it, and those who may be learning challenged from birth. We have a high percentage of FAE and FAS persons in the north, likely a reflection of the alcohol use statistics.

    I do observe, though, that the software is becoming more intuitive and that there is an increasing use of graphics as visual aid in much of it's application. Those with lessor reading skills remain at a disadvantage to considerable degree, yet are able to utilize this tool to some effect.

    The greater divide, in these parts, is related to the considerable cost related to even basic internet access. Go over your monthly allotment bandwidth and you will be HAMMERED!

    Thankfully, no teenagers in this household burning up the bandwidth. The movie watcher who also resides here only got caught in that trap once.......trebled the monthly bill by downloading 'free' movies.

    The internet is a money machine beyond compare......no 'tangible' goods to manufacture, warehouse and transport, and most of the raw materials are a creation of the mind. Yet the delivery system gets to charge royally for the delivery of access to this virtual reality.

    Brilliant........in a rather disturbing way......not quite certain why I feel this way......rather edgy about it all.

    It is simple to declare as a human right that which is easy to deliver.

    Water, food, clothing and shelter are not so easy.
