They have the DNA of his relatives that were collected over the years.

    As for his burial:

"Today religious rights were conducted for the deceased on the deck of the USS Carl-Vinson which is located in the North Arabian Sea," a senior defence official said.

"Traditional procedures for Islamic burial were followed. The deceased's body was washed and then placed in a white sheet. The body was placed in a weighted bag.

"A military officer read prepared religious remarks which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker. After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat-board... (and) eased into the sea."

    It may not stop terror.

But make no mistake, this is not a mere "shot across the bow" we hit them hard, and we won a hell of a victory today...yesterday.

    Morning in America

To the one, there's just some of that going around.

To the other, at some point, yeah, we're going to have to consider the politics of this; Obama has had what some might describe as an enviable week as president.

To Zaphod's third, it would be nice to "be an American for one day", but conspiracy theorists and Obama's conservative critics don't necessarily take the day off, either, whether here at Sciforums, or out in the culture at large.

And we should also consider that being an American involves capitalism, and that there is such a notion as politcal currency. So being a bit crass about the politics before the body has stopped smoking is perfectly American.

(I do sympathize, sir. But at the same time, I can't throttle the people who can't even be bothered to catch up on the news before posting their paranoia or machismo. Life goes on. It's the next day. Game on, so to speak, whether we like it or not. Personally, I think today should be a one-time holiday: Everybody must get stoned. Okay, drunk. Wired on coffee. Doing 5-Hour shooters. I don't know. But low- and mid-level bureaucrats across the nation aren't getting much done today. If I was still working for the insurance company, yeah, nothing would be getting done today; we'd all go in to work, but spend the day talking about bin Laden, baseball, the hockey playoffs, and there would be the one guy I knew who liked to sit around and recount how he and his war buddies used to torture suspected VietCong by delivering an electric charge to the testes.)

It's morning in America, and we are suspiciously not hung over.

    General Comment: Burial at Sea

I get it that some people don't really think he's dead. Life goes on; we can't help those folks.

But those of you who can't be bothered to read even the talking points at the top of various articles—like, you know, what we allegedly did with the body—before wondering what we did with the body ....

    Never mind.

How we treat the worst among us says much about the state of our culture. A proper sea burial suffices in that context. But, yeah, even I think he should have been cremated so we could shoot his ashes out of one of those big honkin' battleship cannons, and pointed straight back at Riyadh. You know, just because. Just because we're crass Americans and we can.

So it's probably best that we gave our enemy a reasonably dignified interment.

I was disappointed a bit when Obama said that Bin Laden had also been responsible for the killing of "scores" of Muslims. I'm pretty sure that number can easily be bumped up into the tens of thousands or more; I wonder if there was a reason for the restraint, but I can't see an advantage to it, personally.

My "crazy revenge burial" would be to turn the guy's corpse into a handpuppet and make him say all this embarassing stuff, kind of like a cheesy Conan O' Brien skit mixed with Saw and Silence of the Lambs. But yes, I don't actually want the crazy revenge burial, it's actually a very wise and noble idea to show mercy to the defeated.

But why fly his body 1000 miles away , they could have just buried him right there somewhere where only a few people would know the exact location. I wonder, again, if blood was taken to insure that it wasn't a body double.

I already announced his death ages ago! There was even a funeral notice by the Taliban [tries to search for Osama+funeral+taliban finds google flooded with latest bs]

    Meanwhile:

Don't you just love it when there is no habeas corpus to muddy the issue?

This is the kind of thing where if it turns out they're lying about the whole thing, then you can be president instead. It's possible they just decided to throw this story to the press for laughs, but that would be completely unprecedented, it would be like Abe Lincoln announcing the Union's surrender to the Confederates on April 1.

As for the sea burial, I think it's an excellent idea, rather than the world wasting huge amounts of time and energy stressing over how to dispose of the thing. If his remains were interred on land, there would definitely be all kinds of trouble brewing around the site, and it would become a special place to help new recruits get all psyched up for jihad.

    News of Bin Laden's Death
    and Funeral 10 days ago

    Islamabad -
A prominent official in the Afghan Taleban movement announced yesterday the death of Osama bin Laden, the chief of al-Qa'da organization, stating that binLaden suffered serious complications in the lungs and died a natural and quiet death. The official, who asked to remain anonymous, stated to The Observer of Pakistan that he had himself attended the funeral of bin Laden and saw his face prior to burial in Tora Bora 10 days ago. He mentioned that 30 of al-Qa'da fighters attended the burial as well as members of his family and some friends from the Taleban. In the farewell ceremony to his final rest guns were fired in the air. The official stated that it is difficult to pinpoint the burial location of bin Laden because according to the Wahhabi tradition no mark is left by the grave. He stressed that it is unlikely that the American forces would ever uncover any traces of bin Laden.

And then what would the US have said then that they did with his body? They sent the body to the CLOSEST U.S CARRIER!!! Its high security! You don't bury terrorists in the ground like buried treasure to be quested and dug up some time in the future but even still you're forgetting one crucial point Bells happened to bring to everyone's attention 'no country wanted him buried in their country'.

That's funny, Hamas seems particularly pissed off today, judging by the headlines. And it's weird too, because I never even thought they really liked the guy to begin with, just like the USSR didn't always get along so well with China.

They could have just cremated him as well, right then , on the spot. They had enough time and gas to do so. It is just strange that they make this statement when it only raises suspicions not quell them.

I've read that the Soviets disposed of Hitler by cremating him, and then a couple of decades later they quietly dumped his ashes down a miscellaneous sewer drain. They were very concerned about the idea of neo-Nazis finding the burial site and making a shrine out of it.

Well he is OSAMA BIN LADEN, why can't he have a resurrection from the dead around Easter?

Still, funeral at sea for the most wanted man in the world? You'd think someone might want to keep him around for forensics

Cremation would have been seen as a slap in the face by many Muslims.
