He was killed "after" a firefight because a fight ends automatically when one party dies.

It was an odd moment, I admit

A real SMS conversation with a friend:

Tiassa: (20.00) Are you seeing the news?

Wiz: (20.01) They got it before the 10 year mark....

Tiassa: (20.02) This was genuinely unexpected.

Wiz: (20.03) Probably because it took almost 10 years....

    Tiassa: (20.04) Only 3,500+ days.

Wiz: (20.11) Surreal scene at Mets Phillies game...USA chants but players and others unaware....

Tiassa: (20.16) Everyone on the news looks like they just got called back from the bar. Bad hair, bad lmakeup, bad lighting in the studio. Ah. Williams, NBC, is out of wardrobe.

Tiassa: (20.23) A week ago, near Islamabad. Bomb stike against a mansion. So say the early reports.

Tiassa: (20.41) So much for the early hints.

Wiz: (20.46) Well, you know how futile it is to try to get the scoop in the information age....

    Very nearly anti-climactic, that one.

Or there's the other, overlapping conversation that went on:

Tiassa: (19.59) Just in. Apparently no joke: Osama bin Laden is dead.

Tig: (20.08) I want pictures and DNA.

Tig: (20.13) Somebody needs to check the body for freezer burn.

Tiassa: (20.14) Aye. And make sure they find OBL's long-form birth certificate.

Tiassa: (20.18) Obama 45 minutes late to give address. On phone w/Congress. News people look like shit; it's 11:00 back east.

Quite the contrast, eh? Yet still anti-climactic.

Hercules noted earlier that, "This thread will be an interesting insight into the American psyche". Extending that proposition to the broader reactions in the culture, he's right. But not for our petty, celebratory bloodlust. That's hardly news. Rather, and it's a little harder to explain, but we felt, for lack of a better term, emasculated by 9/11. We got kicked in the sac by some two-bit hustler from the third world. That's just not supposed to happen. And all through our wars over the last nine and a half years, that's just been burning us up. We couldn't get him. We couldn't get him. What the fuck is wrong with us that we can't get him?

And then we got him. So now we feel better. Like we got our balls back.

How we act now will reveal much about the American psyche.

That's a safe bet. I mean, the shooting and killing is what it is. But the 3,500 days on the lam? There has to be some seriously dark comedy in there somewhere. Macabre beyond belief. But

—generally speaking, I think the answer is fairly obvious insofar as there's a reason we've been shooting blindly at everything that moves inside Pakistan. I'm pretty sure the appearance of bin Laden getting help from the Pakistanis doesn't surprise anyone in the military or intelligence sectors.

We're already at war in Pakistan, regardless of the absent formalities. I don't think we can imagine that the answers to your questions are going to do anything but add to the target list.

Perhaps the test of our American psyche will be how we handle those details.

Yeah, I heard a news report that he would be buried within 24 hours and that he was badly disfigured.

An hour later, it is reported that he was ALREADY buried AT SEA?!?!?!

    BURIED AT SEA?????

    :bugeye::bugeye::bugeye:

I was already skeptical of this story, but this takes the fuckin cake... and buries it at sea. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

And these almost comical, brainwashed, predictable "pro" American yuppies chanting in the streets.

    Give me a fuckin break.

This is the stupidest, most implausible thing I've heard about since... since about 3 days ago. Two strange birds in one week.

Why what happened three days ago? Anyway this is the buried at sea explanation:

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. official says Osama bin Laden has been buried at sea.
After bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. forces in Pakistan, senior administration officials said the body would be handled according to Islamic practice and tradition. That practice calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours, the official said. Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult, the official said. So the U.S. decided to bury him at sea.The official, who spoke Monday on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive national security matters, did not immediately say where that occurred.

    http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap...77ivkA?docId=8438621e67ee44308469f05a7c2972ef

If no country was willing to keep Bin Laden's remains then the only place would be at sea. And its a real rub in the face to his supporters, you know kind of like letting Saddam's enemies hoist him up and publicly hang him. I don't know why it all seems to incredulous.

The chain of custody of the evidence is completely erased.

This is too good/bad to be true. Everything about the entire story is suspicious.

    Whadya think? Hint: Obama...

If you want to see a mangled Osama bin Laden ....

Title: "Bin Laden is DEAD: Celebrations across America as U.S. special forces shoot dead terror chief in mansion hideaway in Pakistan", by Daily Mail Reporter
    Date: May 2, 2011

Warning: The article linked above contains graphic images.

Some details according to the London tabloid Daily Mail:

U.S. military sources revealed tonight that Bin Laden had been taken by surprise by the attack by a small team of U.S. Navy Seals who landed in the grounds of the compound.

During an operation in which troops were on the ground for just 40 minutes, they stormed the terror chief's hideaway.

Four helicopters took part in the attack on bin Laden's two-storey house, which is understood to be within 100 yards of a military building in Abbottabad, a garrison town which is home to thousands of Pakistani troops.

According to Pakistani officials in the town, fighters on the roof opened fire with rocket propelled grenades as the aircraft came close to the building. Pakistani officials and local people said one of the helicopters crashed.

In a dramatic finale, it is said that bin Laden was offered the chance to surrender. But the leader, who had always said he would not be captured alive, refused and was blasted in the head by troops.

Three of the terror leader's men, including his own son, were also killed in the raid alongside a woman. They reportedly tried to act as a human shield in a furious firefight.

Pictures showing bin Laden's bloodied face were played on Pakistani TV. His beard and hair are both noticeably darker than they have appeared to be in previous videos.

The Mail includes a distorted image alleged to be of the dead Osama bin Laden. Incidentally, it also includes a genuinely chilling image of the 9/11 attack that I had never actually seen before.

Somewhat less disturbing are the images of the celebrations following the president's announcement:

New York, New York: Thousands celebrate the destruction of a man who grievously wounded their city and nation.

But, yes, the wrecked face alleged to be Osama bin Laden's is available for your perusal.

Wasn't invited to the Royal wedding?

3 days ago Obama did nothing in the public eye. People were glued to their screens watching Royal pomp and ceremony at its best.

About as suspicious as that birth certificate and guess what.. that too was real..

    Funny, huh?

Ok, I admit I'm lost. What happened with Obama three days ago?

The US in no way would have wanted a trial for Bin Laden. Holding him would have been a security nightmare, trying him would have given Bin Laden a chance to use the event as a means of propaganda just like the Americans would, so I'm not surprised he was killed.

You say everything about the entire story is suspicious but that has been the case since 9/11. People still believe it was an inside job, that the buildings were demolitioned, that the planes were military plans not commercial, Shanksville flight was shot down, Pentagon wasn't hit by jet at all but blown up by the pentagon itself and I could go on and on, I mean its endless so its not surprising this story would also fall under the same scrutiny but everything they have said so far is entirely plausible. The only people who would need to see actual physical evidence is intel from other nations, Pakistan in particular.

It was good of the Americans to respect Islamic burial practise in burying him within 24 hours. I wonder if they respected the other Islamic burial rites.

In preparation for burial, the family or other members of the community will wash and shroud the body. (If the deceased was killed as a martyr, this step is not performed; martyrs are buried in the clothes they died in.) The deceased will be washed respectfully, with clean and scented water, in a manner similar to how Muslims make ablutions for prayer. The body will then be wrapped in sheets of clean, white cloth (called the kafan).

    Funeral Prayers

The deceased is then transported to the site of the funeral prayers (salat-l-janazah). These prayers are commonly held outdoors, in a courtyard or public square, not inside the mosque. The community gathers, and the imam (prayer leader) stands in front of the deceased, facing away from the worshippers. The funeral prayer is similar in structure to the five daily prayers, with a few variations. (For example, there is no bowing or prostration, and the entire prayer is said silently but for a few words.)

    Burial

The deceased is then taken to the cemetery for burial (al-dafin). While all members of the community attend the funeral prayers, only the men of the community accompany the body to the gravesite. It is preferred for a Muslim to be buried where he or she died, and not be transported to another location or country (which may cause delays or require embalming the body). If available, a cemetery (or section of one) set aside for Muslims is preferred. The deceased is laid in the grave (without a coffin if permitted by local law) on his or her right side, facing Mecca. At the gravesite, it is discouraged for people to erect tombstones, elaborate markers, or put flowers or other momentos.

Rarely do I agree with Giambattista and his conspiracy theories, but this hasty burial at sea story stinks like a three year old kipper.

Rarely do I agree with Captain Kremmen's references to three year old kippers, but... what's a kipper?
    kipper (plural kippers)
    1. A split, salted and smoked herring.
    2. (military) An RAF World War II code name for patrols to protect fishing boats in the Irish and North Seas against attack from the air.

Well, #2 kind of fits, don't it?

In other news, what do you mean by Giambattista and his conspiracy theories? Care to explain? :shh:

So what is your take on this? What in your opinion really happened? What is the cover-up? Why?

No one from any community would have been allowed at a Bin Laden funeral and even if he wasn't buried at sea he wouldn't have had a public funeral. He was on the most wanted list his entire religious entitlements were never going to be a priority.

This reminds me of Hitler's story, was he shot was he poisoned set on fire in a shallow grave, maybe all of the above. Did they do DNA tests? I mean for all we know Hitler and Eva could have escaped and grown old in Trenton, NJ.

It could be a simple deception about the reason.
Why such sudden concern for Muslim sensibilities?
And just with regard to the speed of burial.

This is going to cause unrest in the Middle East anyway.
    Osama had cult status.
    A holy warrior.

I'm trying to think of a figure in the West whose assassination today could cause such a shock. The British Queen possibly.

Okay, it's 5 days ago by now. Birth certificate. Does that refresh your memory?

Establishing evidence, holding a fair trial, and pronouncing a guilty verdict after the trial, should have been the first course of action.
In reality however, our government rarely does the right thing as either first or second course of action. And by that time, doing the right thing generally becomes impossible.
