My wife thinks they're trying to use this to make a case for armed revolution.

As far as Clinton goes, they went after him for fooling around with an intern...a Washington tradition...if not necessarily a talked-about one...

(Why don't Congress members use bookmarks? they like their Pages bent over! ba-dum-ting!)

Here's a little factoid for you birthers. The US military will only accept a birth certificate that's been certified by the state, aka certificate of live birth. Right this second, there's a plethora of high ranking military officials, who have top secret access, and never produced the easily forgeable long form birth certificate.

I challenge anyone to provide me a copy of George Bush's original long form birth certificate. Thank you in advance.

I wouldn't doubt it. Whenever a Democrat is elected the Republicans go apeshit. As much as they pontificate about democracy, they're the last one's to respect or accept the will of the American people, especially if they don't vote Republican. They're actually supporters of a right wing dictatorship, they don't want to share power, they don't want to allow liberal policies to take root, even if the people voted for it.

You are absoutely correct Gany. It is important to note that their definition of liberal is an opinion, position or policy not endorsed by the Republican Party.

-One Mexico has a fair amount of oil, copper and bauxite which they export...I would not describe Mexico as resource-poor.

NAFTA has resulted in "agricultural dumping": we subsidize production here, therefore farmers are able to export food below cost to Mexico.
(Why our taxes help this? hmmm)
This has cost Mexican farmers, as a whole, an estimated 1.4 billion a year.

    http://www.ase.tufts.edu/gdae/Pubs/rp/GC29July10Wise.pdf

At any rate, an estimated 2.3 million Mexican farmers have not continued, presumably because they could not...and moved into the cities.

A not-insignificant number of them have come to El Norte to try their luck here. Others are from the cities, but they're having to compete with an influx of ex-farmers and kinfolk.

And we are the indirect cause of that.
I fail to see what's anti-American in pointing it out.
Unless you're saying it's anti-American to admit we're the cause of some of Mexico's economic problems?
And that our agricultural policies are directly connected to driving farmers there out of business?
And free trade with China means there's not enough factories in Mexico to keep them all employed there, so they come here?

At the same time, we're kind of serving as a safety valve ATM...one that's not going to function as such for much longer, because our economy will get worse.

But this doesn't have a lot to do with the Prez...I really ought to leave it for another thread...

The U.S is already more liberal than 95% of the countries out there. I lived there for a few years.

I would like to see that debauchery.

However, his credentials as a natural born citizen were never quite in question, all other issues notwithstanding.

Ever occur to you that perhaps Obama isn't everyone's definition of a true liberal either?

    No?

You're saying I should take their word on it, or that I'm right to be skeptical?

I don't know. I would have let this issue pass a long time ago if there weren't so many loose ends, gaps, and truly unresolved questions that tantalize and confound me.

"I've seen, touched, smelled, and generally molested the real birth certificate. But I can't show you that. Sorry, state's law!"

At least State Rights have a bit part, however contrived.

One alternative theory is that this whole birth issue is a faux controversy put forth by the Obama administration to ensnare and generally undermine anyone who would fall into that trap in order to lead on and discredit anyone who would take the bait.

If that's what it is, it's kinda effective.

But if that's what it is, then it's dishonesty in the purest definition of the word. And that in itself casts a dark pall over the prevailing power.

He is obviously eligible for Presidency. People dont often, and are under no obligation to, publish their birth cetificates. Come to think of it, we hardly ever see them.

Did it ever occur to you the issue under discussion as not Obama and his status as a liberal, conservative or whatever?

The issue is the term liberal and how it is used by the right wingers. Anyone who disagrees with any policy, idea or thought not sanctioned by the right wing is automatically labled "liberal" by the right wing (Republican/Tea Party). It is the way the American right wing tries to silence unauthorized ideas and thoughts.

The topic that was under discussion had nothing to do with Obama and how he falls on a realistic political spectrum. Republican/Tea Partiers paint him as a whacko extreme leftist when in reality he is a very moderate and has never been anything but a moderate.

Just watched the OP's video. Both parents, huh?

So, every presidential candidate must undergo DNA paternity and maternity tests to determine who their parents actually are. Did Obama Sr really sire Obama Jr? And, for that matter, did his mother really bear him? Same thing for John McCain III. Anyone care to suggest that Roberta Wright McCain "jumped the fence" and that John S. McCain Jr is not his real father? Let's exhume his body and find out for sure.

This also makes children born out of unsolved rape cases or from sperm banks or from the-mother-doesn't-know-who-the-father-was situations to be ineligible to become president because the nationality of their father is unknown. This unabashedly resurrects and further fortifies the "bastard" appellation and its implications.

The idea of "natural born citizen" also suggests that all persons are natural born citizens of a country. So, for example, if Obama is not a "natural born citizen" of the US, then of what country was he a "natural born citizen"?

For me, the birther movement always has been -- and always will be -- racism in disguise.

It really is crazy. You have states threatening to pass laws requiring long form birth certificates to be filed with the state in order to get listed on the ballot. That could backfire on them. I live in a Red State that only issues short form (certificates of live birth). The Arizona legislation allows for a certificate of circumcision as a subsitute. But what if you are not circumcised or a woman like Bachman?

This is just silly nonsense. When you cannot, will not or don't want to talk about the serious issues and solve the serious problems we face you get this nonsense. I think this really shows where the heads of the Republicans/Tea Partiers are at these days. They are not thinking about the solving the nations problems. Instead of real solutions to the very real problems the nation faces, they offer us silly theatrics.

I brought this thread back to life for one purpose only. For the benefit of the few that seem to doubt that all it takes to become an American citizen is to born on U.S. soil.

I mentioned, several posts back in the thread, that a place in California was shut down not TOO long ago that was nothing but a place for foreign women (Chinese, to be precise) to come and stay to give birth to their kids so they would automatically be citizens. While looking for something else, I came across an article about that - and it should serve to remove any doubt about the process.

Immigrants are a horrible thing. I think that all immigrants and decendants of immigrants should be deported... oh... wait...

Heh! Yeah - that would pretty well wipe everyone out.

And it would REALLY make things complicated for people like me - since 32% of me could stay (Amerind) but the remaining 68% would be deported.

    Regarding the Chinese birth tourism...

I actually figured most of those babies-I think they'd be dual-citizenship babies-would end up working in international trade.

I think people doing that well in China wouldn't be inclined to emigrate-the schools to be had there are good to very good.

The righties are being paranoid about an unreal problem, methinks?
