That's actually a subject for atheism, not science ... of course its often the trend of atheists to borrow from the authority of science in order to lend credibility to their arguments, but it doesn't take much to reveal that what they are talking about is not science.

It means we are rather insignificant in comparison, both in time and space.

yeah i think it is purpose and meaning otherwise we would just be random processes of dust being blown by the wind. But we sprang from the dust and by being alive and conscious carry a meaning in comparison to a lifeless universe. Do you understand where I'm coming from? consciousness = meaning

Yes..I think I know what you mean. Thanks for the good insights! I agree it's pretty much all about consciousness. But where it's going I haven't a clue..

Perhaps it will go to a all knowing consciousness where everything carries meaning. Kind of like the traditional views of a God.

It has to be huge, unbounded even, because there can be no limits to the All, but, technically, it is so huge because its infinitesimal opposite, zero even, is so small.

    Enjoy all that lies between.

The actual material reality sans a feeler and thinker in the heart and brain is utterly breathtaking and self-fulfilling. We are but flesh and blood, no soul or consciousness will continue after death as we do not have an 'I' or self to carry on. Your clearly and obviously deluded mind is hilarious to me for example. You think or want to believe in a fantasy where reality is not material but something else. I'd rather be a troll any day than to even remotely end up in your position. Pathetic.

You are just anthropomorphising the universe instead of God here. There is no particular reason the universe should have a "use". And our strong impulse to survive is the most obvious result of natural selection possible; if our ancenstors, right back to the first life on Earth, didn't have an "impulse" (as much as the word makes sense for such primitive life) to survive, then it wouldn't have, and we wouldn't be here. Nothing to do with giving meaning to life.

I think your misunderstanding my point of view. What I am proposing is that life itself is meaningful that it is meaning taking a form of existence. Can you imagine what reality would be like if nothing could perceive that it exists? There might as well be nothing because it cannot be perceived or enjoyed. Can the universe carry out "a purpose" without life? Nope. I suggest that we came from the dust of the earth or elsewhere through random processes that eventually was able to create a purpose of survival. We now have gone a long ways and are the universe aware that it exists and our most fundamental desire is to survive and keep the process going. So at the most basic level life is equal to meaning. So when a person goes on saying my existence is meaningless I will die and be forgotten his sense of meaning is distorted because he was part of a process that carried meaning and even if his brain believed it every cell in his body fought with a purpose. Even the single cell organism has a meaning and its survival. Without any life there would be no meaning because nothing could have a purpose.

    So?

But you're assuming that there is a purpose.

Why is "meaning" required? Or "purpose"?

i think this opinion depends on the viewer. I think existence is pointless without awareness.

Doesn't the most primitive organism struggle to survive? It carries a purpose and meaning even if it isn't aware of it.

Its not required since it will probably disappear again. It is just a luxury.

But it's still only an opinion.

Why? Why does it have a point if there's awareness?

    No, it carries neither.

If it's not required then why postulate it?
You're assuming that there is purpose and meaning.

I understand your position but you'll have to remember that awareness and life are characteristics of highly organized matter. Ordinary 'dead' matter.
Don't get me wrong, I think life is very special. There's just nothing supernatural about it.

That said, it is hard to account for this thing we call consciousness isn't it? It is easy to account for everyone else, easy to imagine that all these wonderful natural laws can give rise to natural selection and evolution and complex life, yet it is difficult to account for ones own sense of existing. I'm not saying it is supernatural, but I think that part is quite beyond our current ability to explain.

I understand that . The everything has meaning part . The dependency of everything . All relies on all . A clock work world . I see it sometimes . It makes Me dizzy when I do. It is weird for everything falls in a perfect harmony of motion . Free will vanishes . I don't know if it is a good thing to be aware.

What do you mean? I know other living things are essentially the same as I am. At least those with a (more or less) central nervous system.

What is it that you mistake for meaning?

Science does not care if you don't like the truth it reveals. Science is not a person, it cannot "be" nihilistic. YOU can become nihilistic, if you do not adapt to new truths revealed by science, just like Nietzsche warned everyone about...
