The Shawshank Redemption was ranked as one of the best movies of all time on IMDb, back when they had that list.

Love and other drugs. Not a typical lovestory, but lots of sex scenes....

I would love to see the book "A Confederacy of Dunces" made into a movie. I keep hoping!

That's so weird, I just started reading this (for the 3rd or 4th time)! I was thinking last night about how to make a movie of it.

    Communniss!

Spider, what actor would play Ignacious ? John Goodman would have been great IMO 25 years ago but am at a loss to pick one now!

Hmm, that's a tough one. He wouldn't have to be fat.
    Joaquin Phoenix
    Seymour Hoffman
    Will Ferrell
    Johnny Depp
    Crispin Glover

I watched Idiocracy. You know, tolerable stuff.

But seeing an actual Taco Bell commercial between segments was very disturbing in context.

Wife and I just watched The Wolf Man. Crap.

speaking of joaquin, has anyone seen the film he put out recently to satisfy his alter ego?

    spidergoat,

dogtooth SUCKED. i didn't even watch the end. then my husband explained that i'm glad i didn't.

but you redeemed yourself with ladykillers.

What? You didn't like Dogtooth?! I mean, it wasn't spectacular, but I liked it for what it was, a weird little family story. Maybe you like more action?

    I can recommend Gunless (2010).

An American stereotypical western gunfighter arrives in a town in Canada where no one uses guns, and they don't drink alcohol either.

IMO he does have to be a pseudo-intellectual, fat slob otherwise he wouldnt be believable in that part. Will Ferrell in a fat suit hmmm doesnt have the chops though! Seymour Hoffman not a bad choice he could do it in a pinch!

that sounds fun. is there pornography in it?

i don't know. i understand the draw of dogtooth, and again, i think my husband did enjoy it more than i, but i just don't have any use for the gratuitous artsy stuff. the absence of reality; it's too metaphorical and detached, and yet indicative of all these things that are so real. i'd rather see a story that seems more real, and of course in which good triumphs over evil in the end.

Mike Judge should have waited another couple of decades before making Idiocracy. That we he could have marketed it as a documentary.

    Oh, I know, Ricky Gervais!

Of course the director must be John Waters.

    One Crazy Summer

One Crazy Summer (dir. Steve Holland; starring John Cusack, Demi Moore, Bobcat Goldthwait) is running on cable this month. Starz or Encore, I think.

While the film presently rates one star according to whoever writes the capsules for Comcast, it is one of the greatest bad films ever made. While the Holland-penned script drew an impressive array of talent (Jeremy Piven, Rich Little, John Matuszak, Curtis Armstrong, and Billie Bird, to name a few) it earned a bit under $13.5m at the box office during its 1986 run.

The general plot synopsis is that we follow two high school graduates (John Cusack, "Hoops"; Joel Murray, "George") on their summer vacation to Nantucket Island. It's a classic, cheap '80s class-warfare roco featuring Demi Moore (Melissa) as a solo musician on the run from a biker gang, who encounters aspiring cartoonist Hoops and his best friend George as they travel out to visit the latter's family (Billie Bird, "Grandma Calamari"; Bruce Wagner, "Uncle Frank"). There is also a running joke about an ugly little girl and her even uglier dog (Kristen Goelz, "Squid Calamari", and Sky, "Boscoe"); the strained family relations of a crazy former military man (Joe Flaherty, "'General' Raymond") and his sensitive, thoughtful, definitively non-military son (Curtis Armstrong, "Ack Ack"). There are the seemingly retarded Tweedledee/Tweedledum brothers (Bobcat Goldthwait, "Egg Stork"; Tim Villard, "Clay Stork"), and the evil, rich Beckersted family (William Hickey, "'Old Man' Beckersted"; Mark Metcalf, "Aquila Beckersted"; Matt Mulhern, "Teddy Beckersted") scheming to buy Grandma Calamari's house.

Which, of course, results in all manner of mayhem including trust-fund thugs; obese, flatulent people at the beach; a giant, mechanical, rabid dolphin; fanatic boy scouts; a gun-toting rhinoceros; a destroyed Ferrari Testarossa; and a Godzilla attack as Hoops and Melissa fall in love while fighting to save the Calamari home.

In a comedic genre defined by films such as Caddyshack, Vacation, and other farces seemingly made as an excuse for moviemakers to sit around, drink, and have fun in a glamorous vacation spot (e.g., Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island), One Crazy Summer is often overlooked or forgotten. But as with many bad films of the 1980s, such as Steve Miner's Warlock, or Joel Schumacher's The Lost Boys, One Crazy Summer is an American treasure. It is a transcendent example of the American cheap farce.

Enter The Void. Saw this recently and would recommend it to anyone that likes heavy, dark, edgy films. Visually impressive in a trippy way with a soundtrack to match. Definitely not a hollywood type production.

Well, that says more about IMDB voters than it does the flicks methinks....

p.s.: The Shawshank flick was OK... but the story, again, was vastly superior..

I'm not sure about that. If you're not familiar with IMDb, registered users can rate movies on a scale of 1-10. Until recently, the 250 highest rated movies were kept on a list that you could look at. And, since people voted on movies every day, the list was constantly changing.

I'm big movie buff, and I probably wouldn't have argued against most of the top 25 movies or so. I may have tinkered with the order a bit, but that's it.

The book is usually better than the movie. I can only think of one case where it wasn't.
