smarts or intelligence? If I were to give an educated opinion as to the greatest mind of history,I would have to give the prize to a society of peoples rather than one individual. The reason for this reasoning is that all of the theories and ideas one may conceive are developed through the stimulations of past thinking. But the most influential and thought provoking society, as well as historically productive in numbers of high IQs are the early Greeks, Particularly, the Athenians. Pericles, Socrates, Aristotle, Hippocrates, Solon, and I could still go on. They truly set a standard of learning that we should strive for always. But if I was forced to pick one man out of the past it would probably be Davinci.

This is correct. He is said to be the smartest Man ever by many people . It is said He came up with Calculus on a dare while drinking in a pub with his buddies . So He came up with it in 2months after he was dared
As I have previously stated, Davinci, he was a man ahead of his time. In his drawings, it showed an understanding of concepts that had no history of study previously.If one considers, Davinci stood alone in his time. No competing challenges to his ponderings. Even Einstien had developed his theories with a springboard of collaborations by many others and testing methods were more available. But as I have said before, intelligence is relative to the subject matter, and learning complex ideas is not the same as understanding how simple it really is.
All intellects have contemporary inspiration from others. Newton had Huygens. Einstein and DaVinci had theirs. Inspiration and Interaction being related.

I read your link so at least agree he was second to none. Newton got the law of refraction slightly wrong, (He had it a ratio of sins). I think Huygens got it right. Neither had the idea of a quantized photon, but Huygens' understanding of light as waves was more nearly correct, IMHO. Newton has some very strange (to us "moderns") occult ideas - almost witchcraft, etc. but in a realm that can be tested, (experiments with light) he was unsurpassed.

I nominate St. Thomas Aquinas out of respect. I might not agree with some of his philosophies, but I very much respect him.

Ah, what about scientists who discover? Discovery and inventions are different. Discoveries are just as important.

I don't think of DiVinci as an inventor, more as an artist; However he did make many designs on paper for devices, but built few if any AFAIK. I also think of DiVinci as probably the last man to know all that was known.
