Actually both of those define me as well...

I was mocking waterworld, but also remember the good ol' days in the army when we would hang out with the beer and have very emphatic debates-- and no one left as enemies.

If you are 20 it is probably too late, but swim a lot. Look at pro swimmers, NONE of them are short, and they started to swim at a young age, when their size was unpredictable. Spending hours in water when there is no weight on your spine during adolescence helps to grow taller.

At least this is my theory, but I think it is true. Unless someone shows me a small pro swimmer...

Stretching is one of the best grow taller exercises around. This is because stretching causes the body to produce human growth hormones called EIGs (exercise induced growth hormones). EIGs result from catecholamines, acid-base balance, nitric oxide, and lactate. Nitric oxide and lactate especially increase height. Human growth hormones harden cartilage, strengthen bones and make you grow taller.

@ RonTaller: I did a shit ton of exercise in my young teens. Never grew much. I guess I'm stuck being a broken runt.

I abandoned the idea after wearing low heels for one day. They make me about 5'9 but are annoying as hell when I want to take off at a run...

Yanno what's scary? you lose height as you age...which annoys the crap out of me.
I used to be 5'10". I'm just a hair under 5'9" now in my *ahem* late 30's! grr!

But I think I did it through squashing a disc. There's almost no space between two of the lumbar vertebrae on an x-ray that was taken when I last really threw my lower back out.
So if you don't do fun things like total out cars, get rearended on bicycles, and get thrown by horses, you may retain more height.

V_I- if you can't run in heels you probably heelstrike when you run.You might try running barefoot on (clean) pavement in order to learn the correct running foot. You should land on the ball of the foot and the heel either doesn't touch the pavement at all, or plops gently down.

Not that you should run in heels. The front end of pretty shoes are just as bad as the back. You can't spread your toes at all.
I'd also suggest taking a jog around the store in the shoes before you buy them. Maybe you can find a wedge heel that wouldn't compromise footing and comfort.

Or a pair of goth creeper shoes-flat platforms.

When I started secondary school I was one of the shortest in my class. From 11-18, my diet was very bad. I hardly ate fruit and veg, maybe the odd glass of milk. For maybe 5 years I skipped lunch as I used to play football during break. But I started growing quite rapidly, didn't realise it myself. But I grew to 6ft, and ended up taller than most of my school mates. I have stretch marks on my knees, chest/shoulder and on my back too.

My younger brother prob had a worse diet than me, and he didn't even play sports - he is around 6ft 2.
