See 36 of them (world's longest, one a multi-turn helix*, many very beautiful, some over shallow international ocean waters, one 36Km wide between land points, etc. some with very unusually support structures) at: http://www.slideboom.com/presentations/184256/China'sAmazingBridges-2003v[1]

Be warned it is a mass of data so may down load slowly, but start it and do something else - they are well worth seeing. At least open site, page down, and read immediately the paragraph of text about several of the bridges.

*This is a bridge that changes the road level in short space. Norway has some helix tunnels inside mountains to do this vertical change too.

    .

do you know that bridge that flips from honk kong to china? because cars in honk kong drive like in u.k., and in china drive in the normal way; check the link

Yes. It is a lot of data as the resolution is so high you can see the individual cables etc. Let it download in a different window while you work on something else. Then you can quickly step thru all 36 photos.

The structures are very well built however I'd think that with todays advanced tunneling methods that the tunnel would be the way to go for many reasons. Fewer of the Earths resources would be needed to build a tunnel as compared to a bridge and there's very little maintenance compared to a bridge as well. Thank you for providing the interesting photographs.

Name a few. They are making a long tunnel under the Bosperous (Turkey to Greece) but it is for trains, not cars.

When trying to cross (or go under) wide waters, ventilation of car exhaust is nearly impossible, I think. That is why China built a 36Km bridge over water.

Not long under water ones for cars - the digging is same but the ventilation problem keeps those tunnels short.

I quote from your Wiki link: " Choice of tunnels vs. bridges : “ For water crossings, a tunnel is generally more costly to construct than a bridge."*

Billy T comment: As I said, going under water makes ventilation for car exhaust very difficult and expensive (if not impossible) if the tunnel is long. – I doubt there is even one 6Km long under water tunnel anywhere in the world.

So economics and practicality both dictates bridges over water rather than tunnels under the water for the longer, difficult to ventilate spans.

The Chinese even have a serious engineering study now for a bridge from the mainland to Taiwan!!! (Presumably for fast approaching day when Taiwan has the same “one country –two economic systems” as Hong Kong, Mandau and a few other parts of China now have.)
    --------
*For example the Lincoln and Holland tunnels of NYC are under relatively narrow parts of the Hudson river. The Verasanno Narrows BRIDGE was built later when tunnel construction was even cheaper and quicker, yet still there is no tunnel there where span is wider as a bridge is the economical choice.

    Thus, not only theory but practice also says tunnels under water for cars get too expensive every quickly with increase in length {mainly because of the ventilation problem, which you ignore when focused on the cost of digging the tunnel only.}

I've given up on trying to peruse China's ambitious collection of bridges. Every time I look the list becomes outdated.

Do you mean there are different bridges to be seen? It down loads slowly to me in Brazil, so I have not looked again.

They're building the bridges very fast, and I don't check often. If I checked every week then I could easily catch up.

  19. wow Billy. For the most part, those bridges were amazing. Shadow the video that was in your link doesn't work anymore.

That's an interesting behemoth. Thank you.

Anyone ever played BridgeBuilder/Pontifex/Bridge It??? Kinda fun.

Speaking of tall, that really long one in China, or the one in France, frankly I think I would be a little scared of going near either of them. I've always been a little nervous about bridges, and really massive architecture is also imposing in its own right. Combine the two, and the incredible height of the viaduct, and I think you have a recipe for freaking out.
