Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week, and pledged that his party will serve as a check against the Obama administration if the president does not favor the Israeli agenda.

If our political system made more sense, this would be an astounding scandal that would dominate the discourse.

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday during a meeting in New York that the new GOP majority in the House will "serve as a check" on the Obama administration, a statement unusual for its blunt disagreement with U.S. policy delivered directly to a foreign leader.

"Eric stressed that the new Republican majority will serve as a check on the Administration and what has been, up until this point, one party rule in Washington," read a statement from Cantor's office on the one-on-one meeting. "He made clear that the Republican majority understands the special relationship between Israel and the United States, and that the security of each nation is reliant upon the other."

This just isn't normal. Laura Rozen called the meeting itself "unusual, if not unheard of." But it's what Cantor said that's astounding.

We're talking about a powerful member of Congress engaged in foreign policy, vowing to a foreign government to oppose the administration's policies regarding that government. Ron Kampeas from the Jewish Telegraphic Agency news agency said he can't remember any U.S. official ever doing this. "[T]o have-a-face to face and say, in general, we will take your side against the White House -- that sounds to me extraordinary," Kampeas said this week.

It is that and more. Cantor not only met in private with a foreign leader to undercut the foreign policy of the elected American president, he proceeded to brag about it.

Also keep in mind, a few years ago, Speaker Nancy Pelosi traveled to Syria and met with Bashar al-Assad. At the time, none other than Eric Cantor personally accused Pelosi of possibly violating the Logan Act, "which makes it a felony for any American 'without authority of the United States' to communicate with a foreign government to influence that government's behavior on any disputes with the United States."

As Adam Serwer noted yesterday, "Based on Cantor's own standard, he's just committed a felony."

    (Benen)

There isn't really a whole lot to say; this sort of eagerness to sell out the United States in pursuit of other agendas is pretty much par for the course among Republicans. And the GOP quite clearly has two standards of what is acceptable: what is acceptable for them, and what is acceptable for other people.

We ought not be surprised that Rep. Cantor would sell out the United States for Israel. He is, after all, a Republican.

Don't tread on them, indeed. This is what the Tea Party wanted, and we thank them for reminding us all of real American priorities: Israel über alles!

So when is the first batch of Israeli settlers due? Will they be setting up on the White House lawn, or over by the monument?

I feel it's not just the GOP - it's both sides. Which is probably why there's so many Tea Baggers out there. Americans can tell their getting f*cked over by their elected officials and decided to give their ass a break and Tea Bag the next round of politicians so they're fresh for a screw in 2012.

Considering the number of Jewish Americans in the White House, Government Institutions like the Fed, IRS, etc... as well as the Banking elite many of whom support Israel (aka Americans with money and real power) maybe Rep. Eric Cantor is just lining up for his next election?

That seems like the obvious answer to me. If you want to be an elected official today you need people with power and money to back you. It's all about who you know and how much of the USA you're willing to sell to them to get in and stay in power.

Any Bankers heads roll from 2008? None,
Any Warmongers heads roll from illegally invading Iraq? None.

I'm still hoping for the Mother of all Depressions

It reminds me of that song, I forget who wrote it, "We came to America looking for a grassy knoll, but couldn't find one anywhere".

Most Jewish Americans are not hard core Zionists and "it's" not Just Jewish Americans, It's also Christian Zionists and increasingly simplistic patriotic Americans who are dupes. Also defense contractors, third world oligarchs and everybody who for whatever reason wants an activist US foreign policy or a neocolonial American empire find themselves allied with the pro Israel camp together the sponsor the spread of Islamophobia which has enough momentum of it's own now that it no longer needs sponsors.

Dick Armey was a former Republican House Majority Leader and is the head of Freedom Works a Koch brothers founded and corporate backed organization that has been trying to take control of the Tea Party Movement.

Dick Armey is a Christian dispensationalist who has openly said that he would support the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians out of the occupied territories so that the occupied territories can be Jewish territory.

    Not surprising on two counts.

One, members of Congress constantly meddle in FA, did so under Bush, too. Two, Obama taking a more Centrist approach to Israel has really pissed off the Christian/Israeli access in DC, so the Republicans to the rescue!

what about the millions of moderate Jews that don't give a dam about Israel?

    just google "Jews against Israel"

Over the years a clear migration pattern has been forming as moderate a secular Jews move to America and orthodox Jews and Zionist move to israel.

    :bugeye:

Conservative Christians and Jewish Zionists support Israel.

That said, the OP was referring to Israel and it seems likely to me that the Rep was kissing Jewish American ass to get support for his reelection. No, not, not ALL Jewish American fall for that shit. But some Jewish Americans in power do - evidenced by our "special relationship" with Israel. Saying as much is not anti-Semitic it's common sense.

Anyway, Semites are not just Jews. Other Arabs are Semitic. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with recognizing that people of particular Religions support others of their own faith even over and above their Nation. Anyone who suggests otherwise lives in fantasy land. Likewise with Ethnicity. Lot of Chinese support Chinese and China's interests even though they are American Chinese. Is saying so somehow being a bigot? Surely not.

While this is true and I'm glad it is, why do you think the Representative was kissing rich Jewish Americans asses blathering about stepping on the POTUS and supporting our "special" *cough couch military supplies/look the other way/here's some new schematics for your nukes/etc...* relationship.

You don't think politicians here are in bed with people in the Israeli Military and American Military Complex?

America should not put the interests of other nations above its own. And anyone who says that only Republicans do this is full of shit, since both parties kiss the ass of Israel.

No, but your imply ALL Jewish Americans when you say things like "kissing Jewish American ass". Hear let me run an example of touchy generalization you might understand: "The Japanese murdered millions and don't care, Japanese love to eat whales and dolphins, Japanese have a thing for school girls"

You could just say "Zionists" in fact you can use that label for many Conservative Christians as you don't need to be a Jew to be a Zionist. In fact Christian Zionist in power in American politics have done more for Israel that the much smaller population of Jewish Zionist have. So if your going to point fingers on this topic you should point them at Zionist and not Jewish Americans.

no shit, but the title has come to label Jews, live with it.

Yes, yes there is, that would make them traitors to their host nation. Many Jewish Americans would fuck Israel for America, the fact they tend to vote democrat is sign enough they care more about domestic issues then maximizing protection of Israel.

Your right, those Japanese Americans during WW2 could not be trusted, because they had to want to support their home countries interest over American interest, you say so! So we were totally in the right to intern them!

    Fixed

Of course they are, what does that have to do with Jewish Americans other then bigoted association like your yours?

Yeah but one party kiss less then the other.

You sure about that? Do you honestly think that either country would let Israel go it alone? Didn't Biden just swear America's allegiance to Israel? I recall then-president Clinton saying that he'd be willing to pick up a gun to fight for Israel when he wouldn't even fight for his own country in Vietnam.

Anyone who thinks that voting Democrat is a way to thumb their nose at Israel is living in a fantasy world.

At what point does pointing out statistics become bigotry?

I have no problem with Jewish people and don't believe in international Zionist conspiracies and shit like that, but it does seem that they're "over-represented" in certain career fields (prominent political positions, media, etc.).

Again I never said one party was against Israel, merely the they kiss it ass slight less, enough less for the other party to make a point of it as we see here. The difference at present is that one party is saying "maybe, just maybe you should not build settlements in the West Bank so that a two state solution can be made viable" and the other party is saying "Fuck that, we support you 100%" besides that of course both parties have show no desire to discontinue military and finance support of Israel.

You know, I could understand selling our your President to support a State in your country. But to sell out your President to support another country?

    No.

I have never understood why each and every President has to pledge allegiance to Israel. Pledge to your own country, not another.

Yes, but I actually give Obama credit for moving the country away from a defacto position of everything Israel does is okay to one close to the center.

I don't think he pointed out statistics. I think he pointed out the stereotypes that fit his argument, ignoring those that didn't (like Jews vote Democrat; Jews at places like the NYT are pretty tough on Israel, etc.). That's why I said it tiptoed the line. I have no idea what he meant by it, wouldn't say so until I do.
