WTF??? I'm totally and utterly confused here. Let me get this straight, Christians and Sabaeans are both religious minorities living in "Muslim Lands" and both are persecuted by .... Muslims? That doesn't make any sense? What on The Gods green earth would make a Muslim come to the conclusion that religious minorities should be persecuted?

The mind boggles. It's as if the world has just turned upside down. I'm in free fall here. Darkness... all around... swallowing me whole... Ahhhhhhhh.....

OK, I'm back from the brink. Phew

    .

well, try to think how poor are dying from hunger, and how people can't find what to eat, we can just thank god for what we have, and help who's in need if we saw or met.

Why does Allah give you food and denies it to other people? Are they infidels?

michael : the core point of fasting the islamic way , is still vague to you .
you did not understand how many contexts (historical, Quranic, ethical, social..et) within which fasting the islamic way was prescribed. you did not notice how many worships and virtues are associated to fasting the islamic way. as also you neither noticed the invisible heart acts nor the practical aspect in generating piousness in their association with fasting the islamic way.
really i appreciate your perseverance in reading , and i could have made it more detailed article , but no one would have liked to read it then.
kindly ... dont take fractions from fasting the islamic way(extract them from their contexts) then make them similar to this dogma or that . instead , try to compare the whole picture in islam and those other believes.
    thanks

Fasting causes electrochemical changes in the brain, mimicking the ways in which primitive people since the dawn of time practiced religion: by the use of psychoactive drugs, drinking, smoking, chanting, dancing, rhythmic music, fasting in the wilderness, and stressful ordeals. It's nothing new. Muslims could save some time and aggravation by just taking acid.

I understand that there's an "Islamic" method of fasting.
This method appears to have developed from the Harranian method of fasting (30 days of fasting from sunup to sundown with 5 prayers towards Arabia and giving of alms to the poor).

While not identical it's pretty obvious that the Islamic method was modeled on the Harranian method. Which makes sense if you think about it.

That said, there are a lot of different methods of fasting. Buddhist fast, Native American faiths fast, Christians fast, Hollywood Starlets also fast. No one way is better than the next because it really depends on the person. Each to their own.

What I was interested in was the history of where the "religious" tradition was based on.

sir : you should have also noticed the generous fruits of fasting the islamic way. it is good for searchers for the truth, to have multi-interests, not only the historical similarities. good luck

    Dear cleese,
Thanks for your interesting thread. I feel you have started with the premise that fasting "The Islamic Way" is somehow superior to fasting "The Buddhist Way" or fasting "The Harranian Way" or other ways? IF you have scientific evidence of this, then please post this information. Otherwise it's just another method of fasting.

I know Muslims who fast. Their health is the same as non-Muslims.
In general Islamic nations have poorer health than other nations. Take Japan for example. Or Cuba. Or even Tibet.
Fasting for 1 month isn't as good as year long good healthy eating and lifestyles. It may even exacerbate some health problems depending on the person. Even people who think they are pretty healthy, may find themselves less healthy at the end of Ramadan and not even know it. I'm sure some cancers will be caused and other prevented. That's the nature of biological systems. People are not robots. What's good for men isn't always good for women. What's good for one person isn't always good for another.

If it's about "Spirituality" then again it's really up to the person. I know Muslims who loved Zen Meditations so much they stopped being Muslims and converted to Buddhism. Again - EACH to their OWN.

Lastly, I said I was interesting in "WHY" Muslims fast the way they do. The answer I came to was because they modeled their fasting on the method used by "Harranians". Which makes really good sense and I'm sure if we looking into the history we'll find other similarities. Probably a lot of myth was borrowed from Harranian mythology and incorporated into Islamic mythology.

In all honoesty, Muslims fast because their parents teach them it's what God wants. Most don't do it for any other reasons than they were told this is what they do. As such, the historical underpinnings are the best answer to the question: WHY do Muslims fast the way they do.

If the poor are dying from starvation, your god would be the last one to thank. Why would he feed you and allow them to starve to death?

Why can't your god help them? Does he enjoy feeding you and letting them die of starvation?

Then, why does your god feed you and not them? You must have some explanation for this blatant contradiction?

    Michael :
once again sir , try for a second, to evaluate the positive results of fasting the islamic way including (both the physical, ethical, social, and the spiritual perspectives. also both the compulsive and favorable (optional) parts). emphasizing only the historical similarity (similarity does not necessarily indicate that the second copied what the first did) would void you viewing the whole picture . the picture of an intensive course of education (fasting, praying, refrain from fighting or offending back) that ends with paying charity to the poor at the end of the month, the way muslims pray together at the end of their fasting .....etc. but omitting that all and only stick to the historical similarity ...... dont you think that you missed the point ?
once again .. muslims are urged to continue that virtuous way of life for 50% of the years' days. ramadan is just a compulsive intensive course , which teaches you (compulsively) the fasting' virtues. then you have the option to continue it your own . wish you try it your self for 30 days next ramadan.
thanks a lot for your concern .
