I don't think I've ever needed anything I found out about by an advertisement.

ORLY? I suppose that is possible (although highly unlikely) for you as an individual, but it can not possibly be true on a large statistical basis. Else, advertising wouldn't work and there would be no money in it. - e.g. McDonald's would not be on TV every 10 minutes. Ergo, it must work, and work well. The huge amount of money in the industry is what opens the door to the corruption you alluded to earlier.

Also, though I can't prove it, I would bet a great deal of money (which is what I do for a living, if you think about it) that you have been influenced by advertising in the past. It has made you select one brand over another, caused you to buy today instead of tomorrow, made your (hypothetical) children pester you to death - it works, dude!

Although it seems intrusively "in your face", it is also subtle and pervasive - she will get you, but that's OK. Advertising is a form of information transfer, just seems very obnoxious and repetitive. But, not to be redundant, it does work - why else would the big companies pay literally millions for a 60 second spot on the American football superbowl?

I have no illusions that advertising works. You seem to think I did...

As far as making me aware of things I need? Do I NEED McDonalds? Hell no. I would have been better off if I had eaten nothing all those times I ate that garbage.

Sorry, I might have misinterpreted your personal meaning, but I never really doubted that you thought it effective in general...

Hey, bud, I agree with you about McD's - can't stand the food. (except I do love their sausage, egg and cheese biscuits for breakfast - bad habit)

On the other hand, wouldn't it seem to reason that if you ate McD's even though you knew it was bad for you, you probably bought an I-Phone or maybe some Tofu? Whatever, advertising works for "good" products as well as "garbage"...

I don't need an iPhone or tofu. I think modern medicine, cars, cell phones and all the necessities of man would fair just fine without any advertising. The only things that would get hurt are the luxuries and latest fads.

I think you would be right. But let me set up a hypothetical situation:
    • Your world is going along fine - no advertising, everyone is aware of the available electronics, medicine, healthy food, etc.
    • Your company develops a new soft-drink, similar to others available, yet slightly different.
    • You (being the brilliant genius that you are) come up with an idea - let's tell the world how much better your soft-drink is. Or maybe an evil consultant like myself came up with the idea, no matter. Anyway, you are persuaded to try putting up some billboards, doing a few TV spots, mailing out printed circulars, etc.
    • All of a sudden - your soft-drink is outselling everyone else's!
    • Guess what happens next? Your competitors take notice and emulate you - suddenly we are back here, where we started. Bummer.
    • Then McDonald's comes along and swallows us all whole... j/k

    What can you do?

Not really. We've had McDonald's for over 50 years, but the kids didn't start getting fat until the 1980's. The actual culprit is irrational fears of criminals preying on children - which dates to the crime hysteria that swept America in the 1980's and continues unabated to this day (this is also when the prison population started to really take off). So, since children must now be supervised 100% of the time (abduction, rape and murder at the hands of sadist maniacs being a virtual certainty if the guard is dropped for even a second), the kids are no longer allowed to roam the neighborhood and play outside. Instead they are kept locked inside, where they watch TV and play video games. Physical activity is restricted to a few scheduled events, which typically require air-conditioned auto transport to get to and from.

This trend is less paranoid (and more pronounced) in run-down inner cities, where the danger of unsupervised kids being harmed or falling in with gangs is a lot more realistic. This is why black and hispanic obesity has outpaced white obesity.

I like your style. I can tell you're a salesman.

You're absolutely right. There's nothing anyone can do to stop someone from doing that. People are stupid and they'll buy things when a commercial associates pretty colors and beautiful people with said product. Hell, I'm sure I do it unconsciously sometimes (like you said about preferring one brand over another).

I still think it's evil to put unnecessary thoughts in people's heads because so and so wants to make an extra buck. Geez, when will McDonalds say enough is enough? The greed of the CEO's of McDonalds is as fat and disgusting as the TV special "curiosities" we all see from time to time that have the girth of a whale shark.

Agreed, hence why i said 'partly'. Although don't you agree though that more press time is given to unfortunate things happenings to kids creating more mass panic to those who have kids. Myself being a parent and my boy still plays out where we live.

I love their chocolate milkshakes. The rest of their food is average at best, in my opinion. I don't mind eating it, but it's not my first choice.

Panera is delicious and probably healthier than fast food, though.
