I tried to PM someone and it wouldn't send due to a list of possible reasons. I don't see why a banned member shouldn't be able to PM... maybe this is something Sciforums could change or modify?
Probably a retaliation thing could be used maybe...agreed though they should be able to receive PM's if nothing else.
I think banned members can be PM'ed by mods and admins, since I have returned from bans to find love letters from the above in my mailbox. However, banned members cannot access PMs so it makes no sense for them to receive them.
Well... does anybody think it might be worth reconsidering? What's the harm in letting banned members receive and send PM's?
Admins, perhaps (not sure), but I don't think mods can PM banned members. Mostly, under the current system of bans, a person is given a "red-card" infraction that sends a PM to them informing them about their ban. This is sent immediately prior to the banning, so the member concerned often doesn't receive it until their return. Perhaps these helpful messages explaining why you received a ban and how you might change your posting behaviour to avoid such bans in future are the "love letters" you refer to.
An SF Court as well as the SF Open Government me thinks...? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
The messages were very helpful however I am not sure how I can post so as to better enable others to read and comprehend sentences in their own language. Perhaps this is to avoid inflaming volatile situations through back room politics.
No. The point of being banned is that you can't access the forum or carry out any member functions - obviously.
I can understand perma-bans but bans ranging from 1 day to 30 days don't seem like they should include not being able to PM.
Why would one do that? When someone is banned they, in effect, become a non-member for the duration of the ban. They lose all the privileges of being a member. If a member has become disruptive enough to warrant a ban, why should they have access to any of the forum's resources?
Because sometimes mods are petty and/or ignorant and a person might want to stay in contact with said banned person as it doesn't disturb anyone else.
If you failed to set up a line of communication outside of SF, that's not the forum's problem. It is silly to expect the forum to dedicate any of its resources to that end.
I wouldn't say it's silly - I'm a member of other forums where you CAN share PM's with a member who'd been banned. I just wondered the reasoning and what people thought of this rule. Please don't give me your condescending attitude Janus!! Oh no! Not that!!
