No objection to either, really. They're descriptive, and not necessarily pejorative.

Nothing wrong, except that I have never heard of anyone being beheaded for watching TV. Got a link?

Couple guys were shot for watching soccer in Sudan or something. Maybe Somalia. But it was FIFA! Have they no hearts?

No, it doesn't, have you ever read surah 109? Did you miss verse 6 where it says "to you, your way, to me, my way"? Or the entire message of that surah? I didn't visit your link but I can guess to what you are talking about and you have to understand the context in which certain surahs were written and so forth. Not only this, I am highly suspect of any "terrorist," group. Two CIA officials have already admitted to faking some Bin Laden tapes, what else have they faked?

Not to mention Osama bin Laden and others have no religious authority, whatsoever to issue any fatwas (rulings). Secondly, in Islamic military jurisprudence is it strictly haram to kill non-combatants/civilians. Not only this, it is also haram to commit suicide. Thus, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell you that what these people are doing is strictly haram (forbidden).

Who does have authority? From what I understand, anyone. There is no central leader in Islam, and there are different forms of Islam. So, it's a matter of interpretation. The Quran does contain provisions for self-defense, and someone could interpret that to mean that terrorism is a form of defense (some members here believe that). All one has to do is explain that there are no civilians in a Democratic society, since they are all responsible for the actions of their government.

In order to be able to issue a fatwa one has to obtain ijazat attadris wa'l-ifta (a license to teach and issue legal opinions) from a madrasah or school. Basically you have to earn the degree. You can't become a brain surgeon without going to school, no?

True. A fatwa is a legal opinion and anyone who claims to have knowledge of Islam can offer one. So what? The al Azhar university is one of the three premier Islamic universities in the world. They have offered a fatwa against FGM in Egypt. Yet Egyptians continue to do what they please. No one can be arrested on the basis of a fatwa unless there is civil jurisprudence to back it up. So what is the relevance of the fatwa?

What if the entire system is corrupt? Should I expect you to learn about God only from the Pope? Sayyid Qutb is thought to be largely responsible for the brand of Islamic thought that Bin Laden follows, and he wrote several influential commentaries on Islam. In the Shade of the Qur'an is 30 volumes long! The relevence of this is that there is a spectrum of interpretation of Islamic law, and the followers of Qutb and the Muslim Brotherhood represent an aspect of Islam no less legitimate than that practiced by the majority.

I'm not defending Sandy, her understanding of Islam is no better than a child's.

I doubt any of the "terrorists" sit around reading Qutb, even Bin Laden was too busy being a CIA asset. Qutb was an academic who wrote a book and was tortured and killed by secularists in prison because his opinions were unpopular- he never killed or injured a single person. People can learn about religion wherever they choose - in Islam, everyone is individually responsible for his own opinion. The only authority is the one you choose to accept.

Perhaps that's part of the problem?

Indeed. People are too stupid to be granted freedom.

Yes, but he taught that the correct interpretation of Islam meant that Muslims who didn't practice Sharia or accepted secular rule weren't true Muslims and therefore apostates, a capital offense.

Yes, really. Can it be in your own house? How many students do you need, if any? How long must it have been operating? What if the school is really controlled by governments? Does the Qu'ran dictate the specifications somewhere?

In practice, there does appear to be a great deal of fluidity in the designation of school, mosque and congregation.

ZOMBIE THREAD RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!!
It's funny that you'd use this as an example of tolerance. I mean really now: You go your way, I'll go mine?!? THAT is supposed to be an enlightened attitude?? Considering the underlying inherent intolerance of Abrahamic beliefs it's really not at all surprising. Given the culture and the time period.

    Yes such a lovely Sura:
To you, your way, to me, my way.
YOU go your way, I'll go mine.
Oh and by the by, your way is wrong. Only my way is right.
Ergo, you go to Hell, I'm going to Heaven.

The funny thing is, people actually convince themselves NOT to be ashamed of To you, your way, to me, my way. I reminds me of those people back in the 1950s America who had no problem keeping Blacks out of the White part of town. To you, your way, to me, my way. Blacks should stick to their kind and Whites with theirs.

I mean, what kind of jerk off attitude is this? To you, your way, to me, my way.

    How about this:
Your way might be correct and my way might be wrong?
Or, maybe my way might be correct and your way wrong?
Or, it may also be possible that both our ways are equally right or equally wrong?

Ooooo BUT that taking thinking! Me brain go ouchie when me thinky!

To you, your way, to me, my way.

This simple phase is yet another example of the short sightedness of this and other Abrahamic religions. Because the person saying this phrase is not REALLY respecting the other person's belief. When a Muslim pull's out To you, your way, to me, my way. They make it sound like they are being fair minded. But, they are not. It's no different than a White bigot saying: To Blacks, their way, to Whites, our way. THIS leads to violence against these two people. White bigots turn right around and teach their kids there is something inferior and/or wrong with Blacks. Muslim Islamic bigots turn right around and teach their kids there is something inferior and/or wrong with Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Mormonism etc...

    THAT is a Fact.

To you, your way, to me, my way.[/I]
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.

What a lovely little EVIL saying that is.

To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.

So enlightened. So understanding. So peaceful. So kind. So reciprocal. Positively charming.

To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.
To you, your way, to me, my way.

Attacking Herr Sandy when she isn't here to defend her politically incorrect hotness... that's totally crude, dude.

Oh! It's not nice to mention that!

What about the authority that tries to imprison, torture, and kill you?
