I happened upon an idea today, is it time for a gardening sticky in the earth sciences sub forum?

Just thought it might be useful - what do you think?

I'll leave the poll open for a month.

Hello. Gardening probably doesn't merit it's own FAQ or Sticky, at least not here.

Horticulture is one of those botanical branches of Biology (Life Science) which rely on very cut and dried (no pun intended), tried and true, experimental (laboratory) science, and other than tinkering with genes for hardiness, yield, diversity and aesthetics and so forth, there isn't much in the way of contested or obscure science. Since genetics and so forth are more Life Science rather than Earth Science, a better forum section for Gardening might be 'Biology & Genetics' with leniency there for posts which aren't purely scientific; Aesthetics, Art, and the Floral industry for example.

    Greetings

Sure It does dude, i Mean what deals more with the earth then the Plants that grow in/on the earth.

I mean, I bet alot of People didn't know that sulfur from a fire place is one of the best things to add to the soil to grow Potatoes, Now they do because of a gardening thread.

Or if you live by the ocean and want to grow tomatoes, put some sea weed in the soil around the seedings, it will slow release nitrogen for them, tomato plants love it. Theres another.

Cosmology, for one. Planetary evolution, geophysics, plate tectonics, regional and global weather and climate for others. When I talk about Earth Science I'm mainly describing the Planet; the firmament; the house itself- not what's in the living room or on the carpet.

Your other two points are sure to be well received, naturally.

    Thanks

I would have voted yes, sounds like a good idea, but I dont know where the best forum is, although I think earth science would be fine

that i wouldnt agree with, it is a very dynamic challenge in both conventional and organic levels with changing challenges in climate, pests and varities and their needs with a great deal of variation locally depending on varities available, we have alot to learn, growing plants with the number of interacting variables is a tricky business and interesting science, in particular organic growing appears heavily under researched and alot of the available info is know how and rests with the common man and not yet the scientist, I think a sticky would have alot to offer, difficulty is it woulnt probably all be true science, I would be very interested on any science regarding horticulture however, especially regarding organic methods and potential

I'll bet that few here garden that much. Your idea is a nice thought though and perhaps the few that do garden would be up for it. Good luck with getting it done.

I love gardening and would appreciate a gardening sticky, but it in no way belongs in Art & Culture.

I would suggest a gardening sticky should be in Biological Sciences, as it would deal extensively with botany.

So far that's the best offer you've got.

    A Gardening Sticky

    Hi Trippy,

I'm brand new here in this forum, and I'm not quite certain that I comprehend
what you mean when you say "a gardening sticky". I know what the word "gardening" means, and I understand what the word "sticky" means, but I'm not getting the concept of the two together. I don't think I've ever been exposed to a garden that was sticky, except for one; and it wasn't really a garden - it was exclusive as to the nature of the horticulture being generated therein.
Am I thinking what you're saying?! Man, you are trippy!

Cosmic Traveler! This Note's For You!

Hey, Cosmic Traveler! I adore your pink/purple Cheshire Cat! It's cool the way he disappears and re-appears; just like the original - with his mouth being the only unaffected part; it's really neat!

    Hi OneOfTheDifference,
a sticky, in forum-terms, is a thread that 'sticks' to the top of the thread list of a subforum.
That way it will never 'sink' to the bottom of the page or to pages beyond the first one.
Most subforums, if not all, have stickies. Just click on one of the subforums (here) and take a look at the first couple of threads.
You will see that the first couple of threads (or at least the first one) have 'Sticky: ' in front of it. Those are 'stickies'.

I think it is a good idea to have a gardening subforum (I'm aware that the suggestion was just about a sticky), especially since we got a number of new 'pseudosciency' subfora recently.
I suggest it should be put in the 'Life' section, together with subfora such as 'Art & Culture' and 'Health & Fitness'.

Edit: I'll even volunteer to moderate it.

This poll was closed when I joined but my vote is YES.

I'm into container gardening and short season seed varieties.

The photo is Raxe radish (a German hybrid seed) taken on April 19th last spring. It is getting almost time to plant my first window box as I see the daylight hours lengthening and the sun climbing higher above the horizon each day.
