I'm in marching band, and we work just as hard as football and any other sport. Why isn't it apreciated at all?
It's not really a sport. I'm sure it's hard and all but it's not a sport. People don't go to a football game to see the band. Kind of like how i'm a backstage technician. People come to see the actors preform, not me move scenery. We just help the experience.
By the basic definition of the word, yes it is. But I believe it is based more heavily on performance than most sports where you aren't performing just playing the game. It is the same as dancing and cheerleading. In basketball no one cares if your uniform is askew or if you don't smile after every shot you take, looking funny and awkward while playing doesn't cost your team points...etc.
how often to do use the trainers facilities for marching band? tape an ankle? earn a good concussion? im pretty sure you don't need a physical exam to play the clarinet. don't be sour, i know your frustrations as much as anyone. but in the long list of unjustly unrecognized sports, you are so far down you're not even on the page yet.
I still don't see why they call chess a sport. As for marching bands, I guess they could qualify. I mean, if figure skating and diving qualify.. Although.. I don't think that competition is an official part of marching. Is it?
Ice skating requires physical prowess. I agree with you about golf, though. I consider it a game rather than a sport.
I agree with Cowboy when the Band becomes full contact or they become a running band and play at marathons along with the runners then and only then should it be considered a sport. If Marching Band becomes a sport then they would need to conceder Beer drinking as a sport and Wine tasting.
