2 years ago I upgraded to a quadcore 3Ghz with 4Gb of RAM and then got a netbook with 1.6Ghz Atom and 1Gb of RAM. The netbook does everything I want and now I think "Why did I bother with 4Gb?" and I'm wondering the same as you, "What do you need 16Gb for?!". I think all that's happened ifs I've become my parents, "A computer, what's wrong with a calculator?" or my father's favourite "I wrote my PhD project on punchcards!" after I complained I'd misplaced my 8Gb flash stick with Ubuntu and my work on it.

I like to play with 3 - D graphics and some pretty arty games with premo sound, so I want that RAM, have 8 Gigs of it, also the video and sound cards. I would have gotten the full 16 Gigs, but there were no 4 Gig sticks at Micro Center when I shopped the MB parts. 8 Gigs works well though.

Ubuntu's last update crashed and burned the OS. I tried to upgrade to Hardy Heron but that didn't work out either, so I used the XP side of the partition until the MB smoked. This AMD quad is the replacement for that system, as well as a major upgrade.

It depends on your application. I'm a gamer who regularly "boxes" 2 separate instances of my online game. I need every bit of the 8 gigs of ram I have to avoid lag. Most people don't need it..but I do. There's one guy on our guild who has 6 different accounts, and boxes 6 toons at once...16 gigs would be a must for him..if not more.

I have a complaint finally. There doesn't seem to be a way to modify the system-beep battery alarm. I have a netbook just short of 6 hours of battery life, and when it gets down to the system defined 10% level it starts system beeping! I still have 45 minutes left of battery yet it won't shut up, and so I don't really have 6 hours, I have 5 +1 hour if I'm neither in a public place or in desperation!

Can anyone tell me (if it's possible) how to turn off this beep?

The more I use it, the more it is just like my old Windows XP! Should have stuck to it instead of buying into this new one, oh well.

i've been staring at the unopened win 7 package on my desk for a few months now. Originally I was waiting until this semester's classes were over so if i lost anything i wouldn't be too screwed. mostly im just nervous i will hate it. Im currently on XP, and here are my concerns:

#1. how much does it nanny? a large portion of the software on my pretty girl is ...acquired. I know with vista this was an issue because without a ton of frustrating tweaking vista heavily controlled user capabilities. a pretty, new OS is not worth losing access to my adobe master suite.
#2. that "play to" function looks pretty awesome, but just how user friendly is it? what kind of adapters do i need for each receiving machine, and what kind of limits are there to where i can send my goodies?
#3. resources and other delicious delicacies are limited, since i am on a laptop. before adjustments, how do you find your daily software to be affected as compared to your previous OS (pref for XP users)?

Windows is so much better. Using a Mac is like shaving with a bowling pin.

if you cracked the bowling pin open and used the sharper fragments to shave with, you might have better luck.. maybe try the same approach with your mac? please report results.

    RAM, as per usual.
If your laptop has les than 4Gb, stay with XP. Win7 also likes a good graphics card, and most lappies over a year or two old don't have that.

Win 7 can run on 2 Gb RAM without any real hassles, but if you combine that with older graphics paltforms then you're not going to have the best experience with it - particularly if you're using photoshop.

grph card is decent for being integrated, ram is 3gb. (laptop is vostro1520, abt 6mos old - bought the upgrade to 7 when i purchased the laptop, the sent it to me a month later or so when it was released) on any given day im running itunes, firefox, photoshop, and excel all that the same time. right now, its smooth like buttuh, but if that little combo is compromised (i prob should put my music cutting software on there, but i don't even think i knows what a resource is!) i might cry.

Well, there is an obvious answer - take a backup of your system as it is (Ghost it or what have you), try it out, and put everything back how it was if you don't like it.
There are plenty of great little programs out there capable of taking a 'snapshot" of your current setup for backup purposes.

Sounds like Win7 would run fine on what you have, the only thing there that is a major resource hog is your Adobe stuff.

I have three months until classes start up again, so I will probably do it eventually. And of course, update the results for those of you on similar lackluster machines.

    Oh, perfectly clear.
Given that I've been in IT for some 15 years, and abandoned it in favour of becoming a public servant because lifestyle has attained priority rather than cashflow, I'm with you all the way.

In essence... how much does it really matter if you can do what you do without keeping pace with development?

i agree. it wasnt until i bought my first computer (as opposed to home built, upgrades etc) around 2005 that i broke down and left win98 for xp. i dont like change, especially in the set up of an OS. There is always that introductory phase where you find all the buttons and frustrate yourself trying to put them back where they "belong"..(on my occasional whim for solitaire when im on hold on the phone, i still look for games in accessories. i eventually just moved the folder there.. not that its of any importance, but a good example). the only thing that really interests me about 7 is (OK two things) the 'shake' feature to minimize all other widows, i would use this ALOT. and also the play to function.. it would be awesome to not have to sit at the end of my bed to watch tv from my laptop while still using the web/etc. but im still not clear on the requirements for that feature.

Well, it is fun - I'm certainly not going back to XP now. Mind you I built my computer myself, and it's more than capable of handling Win7's features.

I think you should go with the backup option, and see for yourself.
    And stop whining about it.

    /smile
