How dare the OP compare a large island of rubbish to Britain. Even if Britain is a large island of rubbish.

Whoa! Calm down there, guy! I really didn't try to insult anyone, and I'm sorry if it seemed that way. Any apparent insults coming from me that are undeserved are probably just that: apparent. Or misinterpretation. Or occasionally, a bad joke (my "California needs to be eradicated" statement!).

I know people, including family, that have served at one time or another. I know there are very outstanding people in the military, so don't get me wrong on that. Stewart Rhodes of the Oath Keepers is a good example.
Totally as an aside point, he's a very interesting speaker. I've heard him interviewed more than once. If I remember correctly, loudmouth Chris Matthews of "Hardball" tried to draw a connection between Mr. Rhodes and McVeigh, which apparently is par for the course when you're Chris Matthews.

Basically, the point I was trying to make, and I've thought about this many times, is what exactly I would do if I was put into a war that I had huge misgivings about. That's of course in the event I was actually enlisted (or drafted

    ).
My point was not to insult the intelligence or integrity of all sorts of people I don't know. (Though there are unscrupulous people in the military, intelligence, and other government institutions who have few qualms about engaging in illegal affairs).
My main concern is with how the government uses its military. that's frankly the real issue behind this...
But thank you for your input. I certainly am not an expert on all those things, and am more than willing to be informed.

So, if you don't mind, I would like you to clarify a few points that you mentioned but did not quite go into in depth. And forgive me anyone else (mods especially!) for taking up so much space completely off-topic but it really isn't worth it, at this point, to start another thread. Maybe it would? I don't know.

Okay, explain "conscientious observer" or I think I've heard it called objecter, but only really heard of it in connection with resisting conscription.

Cliques as in insider "power" groups with special interests and favoritism? Explanation?

If you would like, you can give a few examples if you can think of some. I'm not a huge movie buff, so I might not be familiar with every example.

That sounds kind of stupid. After all, you are a United States citizen.
Sounds like the type of person who thinks "whitey" needs pay out to everyone whose ancestors were wronged by anyone in the history of the US.

We have quite a few reservations in my state. It's tragic what happened and all the broken treaties and whatnot. I just think that more could be done to create some sustainable economies, because man, some of those people are just dirt poor. I'm not exactly sure what could be done. Hemp farming is the answer. Hemp farming is ALWAYS the answer.

Only crimes, or are there other reasons?
What are some things that make a soldier unfit?

Everyone has talents. Not talking about you, but even if all you do is annoy people (a certain Baron comes to mind), at least it's mildly entertaining.

Thank you again for your time.

Sorry, Fraggle, but I simply can't trust you if you're from California.

It was a joke! I know, a filthy joke, but it's just something I say from time to time. All sorts of people are always like "Oh, California this" and "Oh, California that" and they do it the same with Florida. "Oh, it's so sunny and beachy there..." and frankly I've never felt the least bit excited about either state, so I guess I get overly annoyed when I hear that talk. Though I will admit, I've always thought the Redwood forest would be neat to visit.

Starry eyed liberals are creepy. They're so liberal! And people with miniature stars where the eyes should be is downright disturbing. Knee-jerk conservatives are a riot, though. All those twitching, spastic legs!

Every forest should be burned to the ground. That's where all the evil squirrels live.
Shasta is where the remnants of Lemuria live. I hear they's real nice people. You ever meet any?

ADDIT (An edit/addition.. hey, that's a great new word I coined! I deserve riches... riches enough to live in California with the evil squirrels)
Um.. do you live near Crescent City? My late, great-uncle used to live out in the general area. When he died, my parents trekked out there to gather some of his stuff... I didn't get to go, though I have been curious about. They saw alot of things along the way. Things that I can't discuss... just kidding. Lots of interesting parks and famous places...

And what were the reasons you didn't look back? Afraid thou wouldst become a pillar of salt?

Or were you being literal when you said "couldn't pay me enough"?

I also liked the fact that the video metioned the "throw away" lifestyle. One of the most annoying things to me is disposable cameras. I've absolutely never understood that.

Crescent City is in Del Norte County near the state line. We live in Humboldt County north of Eureka. It's about an hour drive north and we go there occasionally. Nice place but a little too small.

Objector, Yeah. That's what I meant... I never was one. Oops.
Anyway, A conscientious objector abstains from battle or combat due to moral reservations.
    Yup.
    Heck, I dunno. Any movie...
He also said we never went to the Moon and that NASA is hiding fossil existence on Mars.
    And sobriety.
    Only crimes lead to prison.
Unfit soldiers are pretty much anyone that can't leave the drugs alone, constantly or repeatedly get in trouble or have severe medical issues that prevent them from actively (or wanting to actively) serving.

My solution to the rubbish problem is Youtube: Sean Paul's 'Like Glue'
    1. Gather it in the middle
    2. Glue it all together
    3. Sink it inshore as an artificial reef
    4. Good for fishes innit

With all the carcinogenic mutagens likely present in the garbage I wouldn't be surprised if bacteria evolve to digest the whole heap of it. I say we add more garbage/mutagens and the problem will solve itself.

This is why all the gullible people falling for CAGW, all the money and time devoted to a non-issue like that is such a joke.

Just a 10th, hell probably a 20th of the money spent on 'Global Warming' could have probably done something meaningful about a real issue like these trash islands in the oceans.

Some of you may remember a French airplane had taken off from Brazil and headed out over the ocean a year or so back. It broke up in mid air and disintegrated killing everyone one board. It was a huge news story the world over on the 24 hour cycle. Massive recovery efforts went into action to find the debris field of the plane. They 'found' it two times before they actually found the debris field of the plane.

The media didn't cover why this happened much, those two times the recovery people had thought they found the debris field. But the actual reason was there islands of trash floating out there in the ocean with seat cushions and the like in them, so they mistakenly thought they had found the plane twice before they actually did.

Yet the weak-minded keep wanting to spend so much money and time on a non-issue like CAGW. Pathetic.

    * * * * NOTE FROM A MODERATOR * * * *

This is a place of science and this is one of our hard science subforums, not Politics or Religion. Legions of quite honest, competent and respectable scientists find the evidence for global warming persuasive, notwithstanding the less well-settled question of how much of it might be our fault.

If you wish to take a contrary position on such a controversial issue you must do so as a scholar, and state the evidence for your case. And you should do so on the Earth Science subforum, the proper place for the topic.

To casually dismiss global warming as a fallacy without presenting evidence to support your objection is trolling, which is a violation of the rules of this website. To categorize all the members of SciForums who accept the mainstream position as "pathetic" is a personal insult, which is also a violation of the rules of this website.

You have violated two SciForums rules and are hereby on notice. Please don't do it again.

    Thank you.

Ummm... On topic, I am amazed at the number of people that weren't aware of these oceanic "trash piles". Especially on this forum. Oh well...

I confess to merely skimming this thread, but I did see someone mention that if you took a boat out to the doldrums and looked around, you would only see an occasional piece of trash float buy...

Any visual documentary that I've seen indicates a bit more concentration than than that - if the "scientist" takes a rake (or "rake" looking implement) and drags it through the water, similar to sweeping an oar, they come up with an enormous amount of sh*t on said rake. Everything from 6-pack drink containers to 20 foot garden hoses - with one sweep! Now maybe they have "pre" conditioned the scene so that the trash is particularly concentrated in that area, but still...

I do remember the incredulousness I experienced when I first discovered this phenomenon - Like - you've got to be kidding!

    But it's real...

However, as has been mentioned, they are not "surface" islands you could build a house upon - rather more like kelp floating just below the surface:
At three million tons though, maybe the best idea is to gather/tie the piles together and build resorts on them.

It's not his stance on the issue that's the problem. It's the way he expressed it.

You're all welcome to state which side of a controversial issue you stand on, SUCCINCTLY AND POLITELY, in order to put the opinions you've expressed in perspective. But to turn it into an argument of its own, on a thread about another topic, you need to A) explain why having this argument at this time in this place is relevant to the discussion, and B) provide evidence to support your assertion, as is required in any argument over any controversial topic in a place of science and scholarship. Without that, it's just trolling, which is against the rules.

In addition, you're not supposed to insult people. We all get silly once in a while and trash-talk each other, that's not what I'm talking about. We can even slander all pedophiles, evolution denialists, crackpots and racists because this entire website is hostile to them. But to clearly and specifically assert that every member of SciForums who disagrees with you on a controversial issue is "gullible" and "pathetic" goes beyond trash talk. That's a personal insult, which is also against the rules.

I would probably have let either one of those slide, especially since this isn't my board. But both of them together were really inappropriate.
