I guess the point I was trying to make is that the site is already too close to Facebook for a lot of us, with the ``friends'' features and the social groups. A chat room would just be another step in that direction.

I see where your coming from but if you about a chatroom. They're designed best for single subject things (which sciforums is most definitly not) Although James could probably make one it wouldn't be any good. It would just make mess. I wondered the same thing once and than realized all of what I just said.

Various additions in functionality have been asked for by people of the years. For the most part it's a bit of a problem, because not all people want involvement in any additional components and not all can agree on what format should be used. (Many tried creating IRC channels and utilising free Java/Flash applets, but since they aren't forums official and for the most part people aren't interested so they remained empty)

If people are indeed interested in other applets, I still have the scivillage.com domain for going the whole applet ridden route, without directly effecting sciforums in the process. (The main problem I ran into though was there wasn't really any interested developers in aiding in bringing the community up to speed)

maybe, you can make another site, don't need to have a domain name,
for example
www.chatscienceroom.webs.com
you can make it for free,
and then, make a publicity here, where you post the link,
or post the link as a friend-site,
then, when people go to that chatroom, they want be at the same site, they want be at science forum,
so, nothing will be added to this forum,
who want to chat, go to other site, where he can also register at it
here's the site, to make a free site, with no domain name effcorse, but it'sok, it's not going to need a storage place, just a small link, or site, for science forums members, who can just see the link here, but if they wanted to neter, and like the idea, they go, if they didnt, want to, they stay away

Shadow1, what exactly is stopping you from forming your own "chat group" regarding SciForums? As you pointed out, there are numerous free services available. If that doesn't work, I, personally, have the ability to offer unlimited hosting, including "chat" functions, my cost is less than $10.00 per month - I'm sure proponents of this idea would happily cover that paltry sum.

In other words, why don't you just start your own? I would ask that you contact the Admin's and Mod's to secure their backing, if you wish my help in creating such a site. A domain name can be obtained for ~$10.00, you could make it close to "sciforums", depending on what is available. If the Mods and Admins are on-board, then we could set this up pretty quickly.

Personally, I don't think there is enough interest amongst general members to warrant such a service. Why don't you conduct a poll and find out?
