So yeah, this handy little "InPrivate" (aka: Porn mode) feature on the new windows browsers, well I want to disable/remove it.

Can this be done w/out buying or downloading a bunch of crap I will never use again?

I'd like to keep using Win IE, but maybe I'll have to change to something else. In which case they'll get a nasty letter from me. (as if they care)

Why do you want to disable it? It's not like you have to use it.

    Not for me, silly.

I have machines at home and work and I don't like people using them for porn, especially kids. In the event that it happens, I need to be able to know when and to what extent. Viruses are expensive and time consuming to fix. Plus I'm not a big fan of jail time.

Now I'm going through the options of how to keep some users on the net and keep some off. Haven't found anything real great yet. Everything I have tried requires a couple steps for the net users to get on...One password and go is what I really want but I can't keep the non-neters locked out of their accounts in the meantime.

    I found it running gpedit.msc.

lots of sweet little switches in there but I'll be damned if I can get them to stop running in parallel across all users. There has to be something that I'm missing.

For example, why can't I have different proxy settings in the user accounts than the Admin. THEN lock them all with the toggle provided in Group Policy.? Every time I change and lock, it's a change across the board.

Well, they can download Chrome and use its pornmode, if they aware of your concern. Then they uninstall it, takes a few minutes only...

One way to fix the problem is putting a keylogger on each computer and MAKE the users aware of its existence! So they would know that their usage is monitored. Sspro is $50 and can monitor websites and such and you can set sites not to be able to use...

The title of this thread sounded awesome----but then I read the OPs post, Iwas disappointed. I thought maybe IE had a special feature that provided the user with even MORE porn. Maybe the search feature auto eroticized all keywords. Maybe the various controls (like the toolbars and whatnot) rearranged themselves to facilitate typing with one hand............ nope, no dice

Hmm, I wonder if that's true? I have several switches enabled through the Group Policy tools (free included software). I've turned off Inprivate and turned off the ability to manually delete Temp files, history and cookies at all.

You've got me wondering and now I'll have to test your theory.

To keep certain users off, the only thing that's worked is using an administer to enable and disable the freak'n network connection which totally a pain in the ass. I need to figure out how to dummy out the proxy connections per each suspect user but not others and I've fixed this thing without spending a dime.
    It's making me mad.
Can I use it on multiple machines?

If you were feeling chipper, you could set up a separate gateway computer that would sit between your house router and the cable modem. Set it with a password only you know, and have it monitor or even filter net traffic.

Not being an IT guy, I only know this can be done, but I don't know specifics :-( Also, you'd need another (albeit probably low-powered) computer.

Legally probably not, but I guess the keygen what they send you would work on more machines...

There is a free way to scare the employees. Tell them there is a monitor on every PC, even when there isn't. That would at least minimize their usage of porn and such...

I've just tried porn mode on IE and I'm really disappointed with it.
Wiki and other stuff still keep coming up even with it on.

(only kidding, I'm a committed Chrome user)

Actually, come to think of it, doing it in a fursuit might be kinda fun. I'd certainly try it once.

Just set up non-admin accounts for them that don't have install privileges.

It depends on who you're trying to lock out. Personally, I could probably break anything you set up for free in about thirty seconds, but I'm not your normal user. Nonetheless, I doubt your going to find something 100% efficient without spending some money.

I mean, most anyone can at least get their hands on a copy of Knoppix or some other Unix based utility to go right around your precautions with just a few keystrokes.

I agree with the idea of a keylogger, along with notifying people of it's existence, as your best bet. You will still need to take other precautions of course - in any event , good luck.

Yeah, right now to keep people off line a password protected administrator account is the only one that can enable the LAN device. This was achieved through Group Policy settings.

IDK, maybe you could even crack that. Not sure how though.

As far as (disable)InPrivate and (disable)Delete History settings, I'm pretty sure one could still manually delete Temporary Internet Files.

Couldn't you just set the bios to not boot from the CD drive and then lock the bios with a password? I think most newer motherboards support that sort of thing now.

Granted, someone could presumably open the computer and flash the bios, but there wouldn't be any way to hide the fact that they had done that. If nothing else, the old password would no longer work.

That is the crux - it would matter a great deal if you had to "crack" the system without leaving traces - no traces is nearly impossible, unless you really want to get sophisticated.

On the other hand, to keep casual non-IT people off porn-sites is fairly easy. It becomes a cost/benefit analysis - how much should I invest in order to keep Johnny Cubicle off the playboy site?
