it is a touchy issue.. and since you have banned people for it its since they cant stick up for themself i am going to insisnt that you send a warning out to anyone that has ever called buffalo roam buffy every person on this form that has including myself if i have.. and if buffalo has every called me anything but sifreak21 im gonna register a complaint. if he wants to be a whiny bitch about it then i can play that game too. i think that everyone that buffalo has ever shortned there name do the same.

and its only fair that you warn every person that has called him buffy not just people he complains about, if not this forum is showing that they support favoritism

    * * * * NOTE FROM THE MODERATOR * * * *

As I promised, I have passed your comments on to the other Moderators. I appreciate the fact that in general you all have been very scholarly in your reasoning and in the presentation of your opinions.

Feel free to keep them coming if you have more to add.

    Thanks! -- F.R.

It seems a lot of members here like to the play the stupid act.

"Oh I didn't know" Oh I didn't see it in the rules" blah blah blah.

I think it is pretty obvious when someone is shortening, lengthening or misspelling a members name, which context it is done in.

For instance if you are buddies with the member, you are aren't doing it in an offensive way. I kid with Baron all the time, calling him THE BARON, MAX etc. Since we get along, he knows it's all in fun.

Now if I was to call Orleander by a different name, probability is high that I am insulting her or I did it in a offensive way.

It is pretty clear to spot an insult, by the way the discussion is going or the person that is purposely calling you something else.

But that is not for us to determine. Only the person in question can make that determination.

WELL...that's all cool, and such, but why are the mods supporting Buffy's decisions in who's got the right to call him Buffy, and who not, especially since he doesn't seem to have an issue with crippling other people's usernames either. Really..why is he exempted from his own ruling?

That's like a murderer who tells others not to kill him..

Dude...did you just do that? What the f-ck. I find this absolutely offensive even though I love to cripple other users' usernames, but really I hope that the mods will exempt me from that ruling, too and send you a warning, or better yet, ban you right away since you were aware of the new ruling. Jizzgys.

Hey, don't forget that sarcasm DOES exist. So I don't really give a damn about how you call me. So feel safe to abuse and re abuse my username, Jizzgys.

in most circumstances you have to complain about it. otherwise the moderators may not know it was meant derisively. Specicifically that the memebr took it that way. Not that, in this instance, it was meant that way. Just speaking in general.

You're going to "insist"? How? And with what authority, exactly?

We operate by exception here. When a violation is reported or noticed, we deal with it. It goes without saying that quite often, bad things happen on this forum and people just walk away and nobody says anything. It is (a) not up to you to "insist" how I moderate and (b) not even remotely possible to "insist" that we deal with every single mishap here with a omniscient level of skill. If you see a violation and are so put-off by it, then report it. Problem solved.

I mean, why not just be nice and call BuffaloRoam his name (or just Buffalo or BR for short)? He's okay with all those monikers. Or, just ignore him. You'll be okay. The forum will not follow you home and trouble you further about this issue!

Sure. Knock yourself out, but the complaint will not be respected unless (a) you've previously made the request to BuffaloRoam before this date and (b) he has demonstrated a total unwillingness to compromise on the desired name. Do either of these apply? Or should we build you a time machine to complete your nefarious plan?

It should also be noted that in every reported instance of Buffalo doing the same to someone else (PJDude: PJBitch, Asguard: Assguard, and SAM: SpAM), he was warned, and banned himself. Is it hypocrisy on his part? Yep, but we still enforce rules even if the victim is an over-sensitive hypocrite (which, IMHO, Buffalo is a great deal of time).

Hmmmm. Sounds to me like you're the one being a whiny bitch. In fact, IIRC, Buffalo hasn't posted a single time to this entire thread. See, you can just stop posting in this thread, make nice and call BuffaloRoam by an accepted name, and everything will be okay.

Yeah! And you should also be a total rebel and stay up late at night and not eat your vegetables at dinner! Show them who's boss!

    Seriously.

Do I think Buffalo's over sensitive? Yep. But it appears he's matched, quality for quality, by many of the members of this very thread.

As to your point there, I refer you to the previously mentioned methodology: (a) the request must be made and (b) that request not be honored. Do either of these apply?

Yes, well, when I become omniscient and have the ability to know everything that happens, everywhere, every second of every day, I'll be sure to grant that request. Based on your methodology, since we cannot ensure absolute perfection all the time, we should also have no rules either, because--you know--sometimes people get away with things and sometimes they don't.

Know what I tell my employees? Make peace with the fact that life just ain't fair. You'll grow from that little nugget of wisdom. See, we can only react to what we see. Report the crime, and I'll make sure that the bad guy does the time.

Well, since I've single-handedly banned BuffaloRoam for more time than EVERY OTHER MODERATOR on this forum combined (last time it was 30 days, I believe), your picture obviously misses the mark by quite a bit. I could care less about protecting Buffalo. His presence here has, in many ways, caused me more grief than it's worth. But there is a precedent for respecting a person's handle (regardless of their standing and/or my opinion of them), one which I believe in and will enforce even against the opnions of every member here. If Plazma or James disagrees, they'll correct me (but, it should be noted, that in recent Mod discussions, James happens to agree with me on this issue).

Superstring and Buffalo, this has nothing to do with whether you guys are gay or not but you're being total fags about this.

    One: I'm gay.
Two: I don't even know who you are, so caring about your opinion isn't really a factor.
Three: Buffalo hasn't even posted in this thread, so you'll have to PM him your insult.
Four: If you have something constructive to offer, then do so. Or leave.
Five: Yes, it's better to call people insulting terms than it is to defend the concept of respect for a person's name. Very mature. Refer to point "two".

Notwithstanding the famous episode of "South Park," the word "fag" has not yet been wiped clean of its sexual-orientation connotation and come to mean merely "asshole." The fact that you felt it prudent to add a little disclaimer to your own post is evidence that you realize that.

As a libertarian I am always reluctant to put limits on free speech, but surely you know that the F-word is just as offensive to most gay people as the N-word is to most Afro-Americans. The fact that they frequently use it among themselves is indeed confusing, just as the use of the N-word in rap lyrics is. I regard that that as a harbinger that the word will lose its offensive nature in a few decades.

In the meantime, life is full of compromises and like any sensible person I choose my battles so I don't end up fighting one that cannot be won. The F-word is one that cannot be won. So I will enforce the proscription against it, particulary since another member e-mailed me and said he was offended.

I'm letting you off the hook this time because this is, after all, the Linguistics forum and it's the proper place to have a discussion like this. We're all free to have scholarly discussions of offensive words here, and to wonder aloud why they're offensive.

In the future, please (all of you) don't use it again, unless:
    • It is not directed at anyone
    • You make it quite clear that you're discussing the word from a linguistic standpoint.
I have enough bad karma with the other Moderators right now because of my obstinate refusal to cave in over what I regard as a stupid and poorly-thought-out ruling about nicknames. I'm not going to rack up any more bad karma by trying to fight this battle at the same time.

Yah I saw that episode. "Fag" doesn't mean asshole though.

    Fair enough.

I think people need to lay off String. He is a good man and I am sure he is trying to do the right thing as he sees it. He has banned Buffalo Roam a lot and I am sure Buffalo Roam will give him more opportunites in the not too distant future.

String exercises his awesome powers with restraint and that is to his credit. String always tries to be even and fair handed. But he is human like all of us. We all have our moments and our frustrations.

It exactly is for the SciForums community to decide, not the individual. So far, the majority seem to think BeffaloRoam ws being prissy, btw.
