Not according to me. According to the pattern of warnings and bans that have been issued and in keeping with our rule to respect a person's handle, as established by this Forum's admin team.

Let's not over-think this, ladies and gentlemen. Just call him Buffalo or BuffaloRoam. It's his name and it's his right to ask you to call him by his correct name. The few extra key strokes it costs you will not cause you any pain in the long run.

The easy route is to turn this on me or BuffaloRoam, which is fine. But don't miss out on your pettiness for picking a fight that, in the end, you won't win and over something as inconsequential as respecting another member's name.

I see you didn't get the points acknowledged by the Head Languist here.

I don't think I ever spelled out more then 6-7 letters for anyone, and that isn't gonna change. And please don't expect us to spell and write names like Psychot..... the easiest shortening is Psytrop.

Let's say there are 1000 fairly active members and you guys expect us to remember everyone's little request of nicknames? The whole point of this thread is that Buffy was actually in good nature, almost friendly, thus there was no disrespect except in the mind's of BR. End of story...

There are few people that I respect MORE than Fraggle on this website, so make no mistake. But on this issue, I disagree, totally, with his conclusions. As "Head Linguist", Fraggle's admonitions should be, at the very least, respected. . . but that doesn't make his findings gospel. Sometimes the simplest answer is the best one: Respect Buffalo's wishes, which wishes, aren't that odd or extreme. Spell his name right. That's a simple request.

Should I insult your reading comprehension? Or should I just assume you missed the fact that I clearly provided you with an equitable shortening of his full name: Buffalo.

As to your refusal to comply: Fine. It's your ban. See what I care.

    Hyperbole.

You remind me of my young-ish employees who love to bring up "everybody else" when we're discussing an issue particular to them.

You aren't expected to remember everything, Syz (see, I shortened your name, as you do mine, and we are okay with that). You are required to respect the wishes of a specific member, who's wishes you seem to have no trouble remembering throughout this lengthy thread that you created. We'll deal with all those other members if and when you continuously violate their requests at a reasonable spelling of their name. For now, Syz, it's all about you and Buffalo. That's it. Nothing else.

Do you notice how often you love to close out your points with finalizing statements like "End of Story". You can declare "end of story" all you want. But, call BuffaloRoam "Buffy" or any other name than his full name or his accepted shortened name ("Buffalo") and you'll be suspended again. So, in that matter, you're right. . . it is the "End of story". I don't care about your original intent. If it happens again, in the WE & P fora, you're stubborn intent will be clear, and will be treated that way.

    End of story.

"Buffy" has been the quintessential "vacuous girl's name" for a while. The movie "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" used the name for that reason, and I do not think the later TV series has redeemed it.

Would anyone name their daughter "Buffy?"

Sorry String, your post was TL,DR so no response from me. I am lazy tonight.

I will just call him (who knows for sure BR is a he?) Elisabeth, so everybody is gonna be happy. That name isn't a nickname, nor offensive you know.

In spite of the fact that it's been suggested to you that BR's machismo means he finds effeminate nicknames offensive (as implied by BR reporting the post in the first place)?

See, now that would be trolling and even I'm not going to stick up for you if you do that.

Here's my take on this, originally posted in the Moderators' forum:

What is important in cases of harassment is always the perception of the victim. For example, in sexual harassment cases it is not important whether the harasser believes that putting up pornographic photos on the workplace wall is all a bit of fun. It doesn't matter if he did not consider the perception of his female workmates. What matters is how the victims feel about it. If they feel intimidated or harassed, they have valid grounds for complaint. What action is taken to amend the situation depends on the circumstances, and there the knowledge and intent of the harasser can be relevant. Sometimes, a simple warning is enough - informing the harasser that his actions have made people uncomfortable or that they feel threatened.

When it comes to inventing nicknames on sciforums, that's fine as long as the target doesn't mind. If they complain about a nickname, a shortened name or a mangled name, then they have a valid complaint of personal insult or harassment.

Buffalo Roam is entitled to demand that people use his proper screen name. If he doesn't want it shortened to "Buffy", that's entirely his prerogative. In the first instance, I would warn the person who so shortened that name following any complaint. Continuing offences would result in a temporary ban, since this is deliberate belligerence once you've been informed that your actions are offensive.

For what it's worth, it sounds like hypersensitive BS, and BuffaloRoam should just roll with it.

We all get our names truncated, and if that's the _only_ gripe he has with a post, well, it's looking for insult, isn't it? Running to the mods over something so petty is pretty lame IMO.

You're fucking right it is. Yet another instance where pure stupidity on the part of the moderators - yourself in this instance fucks up the whole situation. How fucking assinine can one individual get? The nonsense and offensiveness and complete lack of logic that is tolerated here on the one hand, set against this infantile decision, clamping down on a meaningless and minor non-event, has not, unfortunately, rendered me speechless. So screw you. It's been almost impossible to find a thread in which to make a meaningful contribution for months, so I'll just indulge myself in another self imposed exile till I forget what a bunch of idiots half the mod/admin team are.

Well thats not your decision to make. Everyone deserves the same amount of consideration, weather you want to jump on the bandwagon and be part of the 'in' crowd or you really dont care. There cannot be a system where it is acceptable to attack one or two peoplple.

As a member of this community, I was offering my opinion, so the weight of opinion can be judged. If the general consensus is that BuffaloRoam is being hypersensitive, then the moderators should quit warning people for truncating, or using an affectionate form of his name. So no, it's not solely my decision, but as a user of this site, I'd like to think I have a vote.

Where was the 'attack'? Please, stop being a drama queen. His name was truncated to 'Buffy', and that's all he found to gripe about, it's clearly no news day.

What i am saying is that someone cannot determine when another person is being 'hypersensitive'.
