I feel insulted that Buffy feels insulted at the prospect that I might call him Buffy because it gives me the feeling that he thinks I'm not human enough to make up a cute nickname for him. I think it's very demeaning of Mr. Buffy to think of himself as something better than the others. I'm against this new ruling that has been mentioned. As long as the nickname's intrinsic meaning isn't meant to be insulting I don't see why people should get punished for calling Buffy Buffy especially since Buffy, as has been mentioned, isn't upholding his own f-cking ideals that he wishes others to follow..calling others spam and then asking for special treatment.

    F-ck this.

well it is meant to be derogatory. calling someone who has a anme 'buffalo' buffy has a certain implication to it, which i am sure you are aware of. if the person complains then you shpuld respect that. ypu could have just as easily called him 'buff' but you chose to put the y at the end.

tons and tons and tons of people have called him buffy before and nothing was done why when one person says it then its ok if another then its not.. choose one or the other.. ontop of that then buffalo should not ever under any circimstance callanyone other then their full name period

It's called favouritism, and someone's subjective favouritism shouldn't be made into a f-cking rule. It's like saying "You can call me by this nickname, because you're cooler than Psychob-tchpuppy. If Psychb-tchpuppy calls me buffy she'll get banned! HOHOHOHOHOHOHO"

Seriously, Buff somehow never occured to me. I have a feeling if I was a conservative Republican he wouldn't have complained...

sifreak21 , the only time you should use your own version of a persons name is if they dont mind or even approve of it. if they dont complain about it then in most circumstances you can view that as the dont mind.

Not what you'd expect from someone who names himself after the largest land animal in the Western Hemisphere. Buffaloes have such thick skin that it's hard for a pack of wolves to bring one down.
Nicknames are commonly formed by truncating the name and optionally adding -Y or -IE. So Buff and Buffy are both perfectly normal and innocent coinages. To complain about either is not to understand how your own native language works.
How about Pinfeather, Rolling Pin, Cotterpin, Bowling Pin, Lynchpin?
I'm not aware of it and I'm the Head Linguist around here. Please enlighten me, if you please.
    As I noted, there's no substantive difference. Will/Willy, Beth/Betty, Hal/Harry, Sue/Suzy.
No one named Oliver/Robert/Howard/Richard has ever succeeded in making people stop calling him Ollie/Robbie/Howie/Richie, by simply complaining. He has to wait until he becomes rich and powerful. THEN people will call him whatever he wants.

When I was a kid we had a president we called "Ike." His name wasn't even Isaac, it was Dwight. It was short for his surname, "Eisenhower."

    I think its called overcompensation:

    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/overcompensation

Noun 1. overcompensation - (psychiatry) an attempt to overcome a real or imagined defect or unwanted trait by overly exaggerating its opposite
psychiatry, psychological medicine, psychopathology - the branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders
compensation - (psychiatry) a defense mechanism that conceals your undesirable shortcomings by exaggerating desirable behaviors

It's moments like this that make me wish there was a way of 'deniably mumbling' on internet fora.

I agree Syzygys (just to make sure I got it right -

). The fact is, certain Mods are taking this to extremes, and making mountains from mole-hills. My reference wasn't really meant to apply to this particular thread, but rather the whole meta-topic in general. I think it's total BS that anyone would get an official warning, let alone be banished, over this issue. I can see possibilities of egregious and over-the-top insults by certain members, but in general the whole name-shortening issue is (or should be) a very "short" issue. It appears that others may feel differently though...

Hence, my honest attempt at formulating an answer, per Fraggle's request:
(I know that I originally attributed the request for "well-reasoned" responses to you, Syzygys, but after reviewing the thread, I noticed it was actually Fraggle that said it.)

Since at least some members feel that the topic is worth addressing, I offered the best solution(s) I could come up with...

As to your personal experience, it would seem to me to be out of hand, as I've already stated - but what should a Mod do with this type of whiny complaint from such a thin skinned, sensitive guy like Buffalo? (I mean, awww, ain't he sweet)

Yeah, what's upp with that, anyway?
