Slurs

That pretty much sums up why I've never understood the whole ideal of "reclaimation" of such words by their own groups. That in itself creates and re-enforces separation along the same lines the original word and its usage intended. It seems counter-productive, and in the case of some words inherently unintentionally racist, and ironically so. I would personally be happy if we move past it and do away with those dated words, they belong in the past.
It's also interesting how words change over time. A lot of people no longer think of the word "faggot" as having "gay" as part of its meaning, and is generally just used in place of "asshole". I think the same could be said of a lot of words, it's just an "insert offensive word here without caring about its meaning" moment.
I recall a recent south park episode where they use the word "fag" to describe harley riders making a lot of noise and generally acting like assholes. The conclusion of which was that not all fags are gay, and not all gays are fags. I realise south park isn't the expert on semantics, but it does seem to have a point.

It's interesting how many countries are considered or at the least more easily accepted, as European based on descent or history. In football(soccer) we have a lot of asian teams in the European federation, such as Israel, for these very reasons.

I'd agree with that policy, and stand by free speech, no matter how much I hate some of the things people say. On the other hand I do fear the ignorant masses may rise again to do something idiotic. That's without mentioning that often sensible people are influenced by their changing environment to change their minds; For example there has always been the attitude of "foreign workers stealing our jobs", but in a recession this is 10 times worse. Could denial of free speech in certain areas protect ourselves? Has our education reached a point where we can rely on our own intellect? Or most important of all aren't we still slaves to reactionary and irrational thoughts and emotions?

I love the term blue eyed devil, but my eyes are a dark mercury grey, so I can't exactly claim that term.

Can I be an honorary blue-eyed devil? Grey-eyed devil doesn't carry the same emotional clout.

Canada has lots of Pakistani immigrants.

Incidentally I think that is the correct term for them, no?? It's the "inflection" that made it bad.

I.E "Those fuckin pakis are all over the fuckin neighborhood!"

In Canada they actually settle in the Prairies more than Indians, I guess they can handle cold better.

More often, in Toronto and Vancouver they are lumped into the general disparaging term "Freshofftheboat".

 

In the UK the word Paki is used to describe anyone from the South Asian Continent, eg Indians, Bangladeshis etc. Its used as a slur against those from the subcontinent.

I live in Canada. If you look at my kids class picture he and the other 2-3 white kids stick out like a sore thumb. :bugeye:

 

Fraggle, brits don't give a fuck about us, they care even less if Canada exists than the Americans do. They absolutely lump us in the same boat as the U.S. They are even more ignorant on a per-capita basis than the average American...about Canada anyway.

It's a big reason, I strongly suspect Elisabeth II will be our last Monarch.

 

Hmmm...I dont feel thats true. For some reason Brits always rate Canada more favourably than the US, in fact after Australia most Brit expats go to Canada. Im not really sure where your impression came from, was it from Brits in canada? Brits that I've spoken who have gone over to Canada have often told me that Canada was more like the US than they realised!

That is used around here a lot too. I call my best friend a New-fie all the time and she takes no offense whatsoever. New-fies have to be one of the most laid back, funny group of ppl that I know.

O.K. is there always another level of prejudges like layers of indignation and contempt for fellow humans . How about trailer trash ? Is that an acceptable slur in society . I find blond jokes insulting my self considering my blond children are brilliant. They don't think there funny at all either .
