Chinese Demolition Screw up leaves leaning Tower

An attempted demolition of a 22 story building in China left half the building still standing at an oblique angle. The other half, instead of falling straight down as most US implosions do, fell sideways nearly hitting an adjacent building. Check out the video:

I can't view the video because it locks up my computer. But having studied a bit of demolition as well as being an former architect, I can assure you that demolition of highrise buildings is as much art as it is science. I read a blurb once about demolition that said something like, No demolition ever goes as planned. And the demolition of highrise buildings is even worse.

What's at fault is often not the demolition planning, but the actual original construction. Where the plans claim that col A-4 is the same as A-5, it isn't. So the design of the blasting force ends up being right for one, but wrong for the other.

Just for fun, you might also check on the forces of a light breeze on the side of a 22-story building. It's far, far more than you might imagine. If the demolition didn't wait for a completely still day,....? And then, is there such a thing as a completely windless day?

Bizzarre! Max as an architect what do you make of that? Moreso the behavious of the building surviving intact on its side? Buliding was constructed in 1928.

A demo where they had fireworks (on the other side of a lake) and somehow a peace of metal was flung all the way across the water and killed a girl. Really sad.

I remember that one, it was quite horrible.

 

Man that building was well built. Even after one half toppled over and hit the ground its still remained intact.

 

Couldn't see the video because clicking on links like that locks up my computer. But back in 1928, especially in the USA, many buildings were over-designed by oodles simply because lots of building types and structural engineering had never been tried, so it was uncharted territory. So, ...where one #4 rebar would have been adequate, they put in 4-#4's See? Ditto with size of concrete columns ...bigger is better.

...LOL! My computer hasn't even seen any naked women in all of last year, so I doubt that this year will be different.

Oops, wait a minute ....I take that back! Sometimes pictures are actually posted here in the threads ...rather than as links. When that happens, I can see the pictures. So, some nudies that have been posted here, my computer might have seen without locking up.

I lold so hard when i saw that, but I see what happened, ideally you want to collapse the center of a building on itself so it drags itself down, I believe they put too much explosives at the center and caused a clean cut down the middle, and the force of the explosives pushed one side over but the cut was too clean and the other side wasnt pulled with it.

Atleast, thats what I think happened.
