Since the end of the Second World War, rumors regarding the existence of giant pyramids in China have been appearing with increasing regularity in the press and literature of many countries. There has been talk of structures whose size puts to shame the Cheops Pyramid of Egypt and the Sun Pyramid at Teotihuacan in Mexico.

I was searching for a pyramid which was said to have been, once, many millennia ago, multicolored, and to now be a dusty white. This was a pyramid which, legend has it, rises to the aston-ishing height of 1,000 feet - four-fifths the elevation of the Empire State Building. Not only was this extraordinary structure said to be the largest pyramid in the world (the Giant Pyramid of Egypt, by comparison, rises a mere 450 feet); but, in the valleys surround-ing it, there were said to be dozens of other pyramids, some rising to an elevation almost as great.

Until recently, Chinese officials have rebuffed all questions about these pyramids and all requests to view them. And yet, over this century, a certain mythology has grown up around them. An American trader, stumbling upon these amazing structures in 1912, asked his Buddhist monk-guide about them. He was told that 5,000-year-old monastic documents not only contained informa-tion about these pyramids, but said the pyramids were extremely old when these records were made.

It was built by a WOMAN! She ruled during the Tang Dynasty when her husband died, she took over.

She was only ONE of a couple of women that ever was in charge of China throughout entire known history. Your mom of course had YOU to contend with , which makes her even better!

LOL, hey wait! That's not funny!!

I can't imagine those pyramids haven't been stripped by looters. Is the only thing there just the pyramids themselves?

Well I don’t actually think this is a pyramid made of stone, it’s a huge triangular earth mound with a square top, and there might have been a wooden fort built on top of it or a pagoda.

You might argue semantics and say yes they really are pyramids but I think they have more in common with Celtic hill fortresses.

Here’s a colour picture from ground level but its a bit too big to post.

so it's just a burial mound? We have those here in the US. There are some shaped like gators, others like snakes You cannot excavate those, same as the pyramid in China.

No, it is not a burial mound, or at least they have not yet determined that it was. The vChinese are not allowing excavation of this site as yet.

why would they allow it? Can you imagine if they wanted to dig up your Mom and Dad's cemetery?

LOL, so? A lot of Egypt's culture ended up in other countries possession.
China is having none of that

The Chinese are very superstitious about burial sites even ancient ones, they haven’t even excavated the burial mound of the first emperor and that’s supposed to have loot in that would make the tomb of Tutankhamun look cheap.

But even today they are excavating the tombs all over Egypt using their own archaeologists to be certain none of the findings ever leave the country.

I'm only bringing it to your attention that there are countries who want to understand what their ancestors were doing back in the past. They are curious as to what their ancestors were doing and to understand how they lived and died. That is what archeology is all about.

The Chinese say that they want to make sure they have the technology in place to preserve the treasures once they are opened to air again. They are doing a lot of work on the tomb of the first emperor BUT they don't want to screw things up forever better to be patent and do things right as they only have one shot at it.

Has anyone noticed that this grass-covered hill is not fabulous, not, 1000 feet tall and not white and is debatably not even a pyramid.

If you check the links by Cosmic Traveler you'll see lots of pyramid shaped hills in a distinct pattern.

These look more akin to dirt burial mounds by the original Americans, rather than to stone edifices. But they definitely are pyramidal in shape, and quite large.

Hopefully, we'll learn more about their origins in the near future.
