Put it wherever, its not like there is any change in behaviour from putting up memorials.

I wonder if that's uniformly true. Are our morals not subject to the benefice of reminder? Do we instead intrinsically stick to our level standards, whatsoere they might be?

Pretty much I'd say. And then there is the Miller experiment. How many of us need to be reminded not to harvest the skin of our enemies?

Do yo ever feel the need to remind your kids about this moral lesson? Kids, we do not harvest the skin of our enemies.

Is there a reminder for that in a memorial somewhere? One that gets more attention than a sign thats taken away by someone trying to survive in a financially challenged state where work apparently doesn't set you free?

If you are going to kill someone, you might as well make use of their body. The killing of people in the first place is the bad part.

Why do we need Auschwitz at all? It's a terrible indictment of the Western mind that it requires material objects and institutionalized prompts to know what to feel and when to feel it.

And certainly, the real anger over this incident has had nothing to do with remembrance or compassion, but rather because someone's property has been stolen.

I think we're on our way here to figuring out why there are no memorials or memorial days for Native Americans in Europe. Unlike Judaism, which upholds and defends Western capitalist values, American Indian culture is antithetical to all forms of land ownership and private property rights.

    * * * * NOTE FROM A MODERATOR * * * *

Sam, you're arguing disingenuously again, your favorite trick. This type of dishonorable discourse is one of the most egregious violations of the scientific method which is supposed to govern this website. It qualifies as trolling and is therefore grounds for banning.

Do you really expect any of our members to believe that you are so dense and ignorant that you don't understand the meaning of the Holocaust to Western civilization?

Or do you just think you're being cute? Well you're not. Take your cue from the most iconoclastic comedians in a land where it's said that nothing is sacred: Even they don't make flippant jokes about the Holocaust.
Perhaps there should, and by now you know that as a libertarian and a pacifist I will not defend the heirs of the British Empire against those accusations. But it still does not excuse you for pretending that you don't understand what there is to "not forget" about the Holocaust.

That is disingenuity. It stops the discussion from moving forward and invites a flame war; i.e., it's trolling.
More disingenuity. As if you don't know that the reason there is a Holocaust Museum in the United States is that we have almost as many Jews as Israel, many of whom are refugees from the Holocaust or their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. How many Rwandans, much less Rwandan refugees, live in Australia?

    More trolling.
Under other circumstances that would be a good question. But by being a jerk who pretends not to understand why the Holocaust is a sensitive topic in the part of the world that hosts this website and where most of its members live, you're probably not going to get anyone interested in answering it.

Basing an argument on a premise that you know is untrue is disingenuity, and disingenuity is the worst kind of trolling in a place of science and scholarship.

I think that people - society, as a group - does need to be reminded of their humanity from time to time. As rising anti-Semitism in Europe and here, and particularly in the Middle East and eastward illustrate, sometimes people need to be reminded several times in a generation.

Regarding your last paragraph: what point are you making here? That someone took the sign for financial reasons?

Actually I'll bite on that one.

I know for sure that S.A.M. knows the answer to that particular rhetorical question - I've seen it told to her, in simple terms, repeatedly. But as for understanding it? Nothing in evidence would support that.

Taken together, those two observations add up to a pretty convincing case that S.A.M. is not going to understand this topic, ever. Whether that's a character defect (i.e., she's being willfully ignorant as part of her nasty racist rhetoric) or a mental defect (i.e., she really is as stupid as she acts) is the classic irrelevancy provoked by trolls. The relevant conclusion is that S.A.M. can't be allowed to participate in discussions that pretend to any level of seriousness, at least on topics with any relation whatsoever to Jews, Israel, the West, America, etc. And you should start treating her that way; patience and good faith aren't going to change her.

Not really, compared to the wiping out of several civilisations in the Americas, Australias and New Zealand, for instance, not to mention the ongoing "western liberal" holocaust of the last 60 plus years in the Middle East. I can't understand, apart from the hype, why its a special case for "western civilisation". Since when has the elimination of minorities who stand in the way of a homogenous population been an issue for "western civilisation"?

How many Arabs? How many South Americans? How many native Americans? How many Iranians? How many Palestinians? For that matter, how many Germans? Russians? Muslims? Kurds? Somalians? Africans?

You ever get the feeling that for 2% of the population, the attention is way out of whack? Where are the rest of the 98% of Americans? Do they have any history associated with them at all, apart from being Americans?

Canada? Shouldn't they focus on the Inuit instead? Closer to home?

The US/ Israel and good faith are antonyms.

When was the last time we have seen good faith from either of them?

All this fuss over a sign when no one can be held accountable for the atrocities of the day. Whats the point of weeping over Auschwitz when no one can decide what to do with Iraqis and Afghanistanis displaced by the tens of millions, when there is no consensus on accountability for Gitmo, Abu Ghraib or Gaza. When you're denouncing the Goldstone report by huge margins. I think they should simply all declare that Hitler was right and tribalism is the only religion that remains popular.

At least that would be honest.

No, sadly not. How about a memorial (courtesy Bush & Blair regimes) to the victims "its raining bombs" in Iraq, so we can remember not to invade nations willy nilly?

    Yes, well said.
As long as we don`t confuse "anti Semitism" with valid criticism of apartheid and oppression policies.
Yes, and of course memorials like Auschwitz, provides a locus for individual grief that transcends generations.

And with that you prove my point.

You aren't addressing "the US/Israel" here (let alone, you're boogie-man charicatures of such). You're addressing individuals, the quality of whose faith is determined by their own initiative (and too many of whom have extended too much good faith to you in particular, frequently against their better judegement). You're intentionally going off-topic to derail this thread via reductive broadsides against entire cultures. This is immature, ugly, stupid and deserves to be treated as the blatantly hostile disrespect that it is (in an informal setting, on the street say, the appropriate response would be "fuck you.").

It is an overt challenge to the mod-ship to stand up for what they claim to support here, or else keep allowing S.A.M. to make a mockery of any pretence of serious adult discourse here. I've already made it clear what course of action I consider appropriate, so I'll just add that the only thing more contemptible than a racist troll is a mod without the sack to treat them as such.

How would you know a serious adult discourse?

You think the real life consequences to real people who are tortured and murdered with no accountability is immature and ugly, you want to discuss the deep philosophical ramifications of a piece of iron that is only good for using the dead and tortured as a source of financial blackmail.

The real victims of the holocaust sleep on park benches, have demonstrations because they can barely get by and eat chicken necks in lieu of meat. Thats not as important as the iron sign that makes people feel virtuous to know they have sanctified it.

By and large, it isn't "us" who is doing the confusing, between those two sentiments. Complaints about unwarranted charges of anti-Semitism would go a lot farther if there weren't an organized international political movement bent on conflating the two for its own purposes (or, more locally, if avatars of such weren't by far the most vocal on the issue).

It's like the "conservatives" who complain about being called racist. When you lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas.

Contrast with childish garbage like your reply is one path to such knowledge.

Why don't you just say "fuck you?"

At least that would be honest.
