Children in the west can also divorce their parents. And there are plenty of unfit parents to go around, so the "unbreakable bond" of parent and child is also a social institution.

Sorry son. Sounds like you have more of a mother than a wife.

    mordea:

I didn't ask who was "responsible". I asked you: who fed you? Who dressed you? Can't you remember?

You pick a site that represents disgruntled fathers, and then quote statistics about the membership of that organisation, in an attempt to show that this is the general case in Australia? You do make me laugh.

    Oh. Another unbiased source. Hehehe.

Why don't you try the Australian Bureau of Statistics, instead? Happy hunting.

In Australia, we have what is called freedom of speech. That means that people can form all kinds of special interest groups, to speak out against the government, to protest what they regard as unfair laws, etc. Do they have freedom of speech in Dubai? Will you tell me, or will you refer me to wikipedia again because you're too ashamed?

You didn't research the difference between anedote and fact, like I told you too. Wikipedia is your friend. Go look it up.

What was the father's problem? Gambling? Drinking? Violence?

No. We associate patriarchial, domineering, arrogant, disciplinarian men with being a loser.

Thanks for the advice. I did. The results of my search deserve a separate post all of their own, which will follow this one.

No wonder you're so ashamed of your nation.

You already told me that your woman gets no choices. You're the big man. You're in control. You tell her what to do and keep her in line.

Were you lying about that, or what?

You didn't research alimony, did you? Go and find out about it. I'm serious. Otherwise you'll stay this stupid forever.

What I have learned about divorce in Dubai (United Arab Emirates)

The UAE has a backwards system of Islamic Sharia Law that gives men lots of rights and women practically none.

Under Sharia law, a Muslim man is allowed to have up to four wives, provided that he can look after them materially and treats them equally. As women are becoming more assertive, having more than one wife is becoming less common. Traditionally, men are consider "providers" and women are given little choice but to be a "nurturer".

A man can divorce his wife simply by saying "I divorce you" three times. Apparently, divorces by SMS are not uncommon. Divorce by a letter written to the wife is also permitted, and divorce by a simple phonecall.

For women, things are much more difficult. Even if a woman has a good reason for seeking a divorce (e.g. husband has abused her or deserted her, husband has been unfaithful, husband has engaged in criminal activities) she must take her case to a court.

A woman may be granted a divorce if she can prove that her husband has physically hurt her or mentally tortured her. She may also get a divorce if her husband abandons her for a period of three months, or if he has not taken care of her needs or that of their children.

The law also allows women to obtain a khula - a separation, when she returns the dowry to the husband.

modea has made a big point about alimony laws in the West. But what do we find in the UAE? We discover this: a husband must maintain a divorced wife and any children from the marriage if the wife is unable to support herself. In other words, the UAE has alimony just like the West does. Funny that.

A divorced man can claim custody of any male children when they reach the age of 10. He wouldn't want female children, of course, since females are lower-class citizens in Dubai.

Female divorcees seldom, if ever, remarry. In this backwards society, even if a women gets a divorce (a very difficult thing to do) she is then expected to return to her family. Presumably the strong, powerful men of Dubai regard divorcees as effectively "unclean" and won't marry them, even if they divorced for cause.

What are the steps in a divorce? The first step is mandatory counselling. Couples are expected to take 3 months to try to sort out their problems before any further action can take place. Who knows what this means in cases where the man is violently abusing his wife?

If, after 3 months, the couple (or either of them) still wants a divorce, papers are fowarded to a judge (male), who discusses the matter with the couple, listens to witnesses (presumably mostly male), and decides.

    ---

Where does this leave mordea? Well, it puts him in an interesting position.

For example, it is interesting that mordea was ashamed to admit that his mother did all the work bringing him up, while his father brought in the income, but this is the common state of affairs in the UAE. mordea is obviously ashamed of his nation.

mordea has also spent quite a bit of time railing against western alimony laws, and yet in his own country the same kind of thing happens.

But mostly, mordea has been critical of the West, when in his own country women's rights in the matter of divorce as so radically different from those of men that the inequalities are as clear as the nose on your face. Women are second-class citizens, and that's just the way that mordea likes it.

One time I was playing GTA IV, I was scoring with all of the hot prostitutes on the street, and then killing them and getting my money back when they brought my health to the max. Don't judge me: I'm a nice guy, and those prostitutes had it coming because they're whores, after all. Anyway, I was about ready to use my rocket launcher on this black dude like I always do when I need to blow off some steam, when this girl I've known and had a crush on for the longest time (we hang out sometimes, but she tells her friends we're "just friends") calls me in tears, asking me for help. Let's call her Bitch, because that's what she is!

Now, I've already said I'm a nice guy, so what do I do? I pause the game and begin talking to Bitch. Apparently she heard from a friend of a friend of another student's colleague that her boyfriend got a blow job from the school slut. Like every girl I've met (because they're ALL like this), Bitch threw a hissy fit and broke up with the jerk. "Score," I think, "this is the perfect opportunity to show her what a nice, supportive guy I am!"

For the next two hours, I comforted her, agreed that the guy was a stupid fuck, and that she deserved someone better. I never told her that I was the guy she was looking for, though, because I'm not disrespectful to women and vain like those other jerks are. No, I kept my mouth shut, because I knew that Bitch would realize that I cared. I figured that this time was a charm, because it can't be a coincidence that every other time I've done this to help my female friends, they didn't realize that I had a crush on them, too. "Women pick up on these things," I figured. "They're all emotionally-driven, and shit like that, right?"

I was wrong! The very next day at school, I see her in the arms of someone who I thought was a friend of mine (let's call him Bastard)! He was HUGGING her as she sobbed on his arms! My poor, innocent flower was in the arms of this until-now disguised jerk who was just after her body and not her emotions! I didn't confront them, though, because I knew that only a jerk does that, and I'm a nice guy. "She'll turn around," I told myself that night as I beat off to her profile pic on Facebook. "She'll see what a pathetic, desperate grab for attention Bastard was putting on."

The following day, I realized what a bastard Bastard really was all along. I tentatively contact Bitch on MSN, asking if there's anything I can do and if she is OK, and what does she tell me? She tells me that Bastard had consoled her and offered to take her out on a date to take her mind off her cheating ex! Bitch fell for Bastard's show of affection, when all he really wanted was her pussy, which should be mine! I'm the one who cares for her! I'm the nice guy here! With tears in my eyes, I accused her of toying with my emotions, of not reciprocating emotional intimacy with physical intimacy, and in general for not seeing what she had all along: me!
