Pets are kept for enjoyment, livestock for slaughter... in both cases the animals are considered "property". :shrug: For the sake of this conversation we don't even need to address the ethical implications of factory farming practices, which are beyond repulsive (as Fraggle Rocker already pointed out).
That's fine. Livestock are slaughtered to feed the pets, too. It's a multi-billion dollar industry. That's one main reason why I don't have pets. We have factory farming to feed our pets. Wonderful, isn't it? I wonder if we can begin to talk science, as Fraggle points out, in regards to the love and companionship horses have provided us over the generations, yet we use them now to feed dogs. How can anyone acknowledge something so obviously false? The turning point in your relationship with an animal comes when they start thinking of themselves as being "at home", when they no longer consider it a favour that you feed them regularly and look after them [if they are born at home, they are born with this "at home" attitude, you can see it more clearly in strays]. This is when the pet will demand attention, show up for meals and get huffy if its delayed, throw a tantrum for favourite foods and feel hurt when they are ignored. This is not slavery, its love. Your "respect" in comparison is some aery faerie shallow proclamation that means nothing, not to someone who actually has animals in the family and sees them change from fearful sick and unhappy babies to healthy, loving and happy animals. This is a stray kitten we got in May. She was tiny and sickwith a cold and diarrhoea. Usually when they are so emaciated and dehydrated that their skins pinch together, they don't survive. But this one was a fighter and although she is an "outside cat" [we did not encourage her to stay with us], she frequently sits at the window and tries to slip in unseen. I havent read this thread so just responding to OP. Is it unethical to give a creature a better life? Granted there are instances where people are idiots and treat an animal badly but those people have personal issues. That said, the overwhjelming majority of pets (specifically dogs and cats) if youb asked them would they rather be with the human or out in the wild would say 'are you serious?'.
Can you show me what difference it would make if I did or didn't? If I did, is this justification to slaughter animals to feed pets?
And, you're absolutely sure about that, John? Can you even assume to state that pets can think at our level? Please people, I don't need to read the bs that dogs and cats can think beyond their brain capacities. Get a grip.

Let's remember here that you're the one who has an issue with animals as property. All I'm doing is pointing out that livestock is also property. So, if you're really going to take a stand on this issue by not participating in the whole animal slavery thing, then you should probably consider veganism :shrug: .
That doesn't answer John's question. If I voluntarily take care of a loved one what's the difference, between taking care of your sick spouse and a pet?
