I wonder would they still be a 'famous planetary band', if they decided to keep this name?

    * * * * NOTE FROM THE NEW MODERATOR * * * *

I'm not terribly supportive of these "vanity" threads in which people simply list their favorite songs, bands or albums. It's a big yawn.

This is the Art & Culture board. Please tell us something about the song that explains why you like it. You don't have to be a musicologist and talk about chord progressions, and the reason can be something as non-musical as the fact that you associate the song with a happy memory. But please tell us SOMETHING!

i second your "creep" fraggle. and...

i'm finding it hard to believe there's no greenday here. the entire album "dookie" was a 90's anthem...

    for fraggle, from wiki...
'Dookie is the third studio album and the major label debut by American punk rock band Green Day. The album was the band's first collaboration with producer Rob Cavallo. Released on February 1, 1994 through Reprise Records, Dookie became a worldwide commercial success, reaching number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 and charting in seven countries. The album helped to propel Green Day into mainstream popularity, amid claims from the punk rock community that the band had "sold out".
Dookie produced five hit singles for the band: "Longview", the re-recorded "Welcome to Paradise", "Basket Case", the radio-only single "She" and "When I Come Around". As of 2008, Dookie is the band's best-selling album, with over 19 million copies sold worldwide. It is Green Day's only diamond album. Dookie won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1995. It is the best-selling punk rock alum of all time.'

Green Day is extremely hated by most "punkers" it's pop...it's not even alternative. I like them, but hey I'm calling a spade a spade.

The Radiohead song or the one by Stone Temple Pilots?

I'm surprised that "American Idiot" hasn't surpassed that figure, since it broadened their popularity to cover a much larger segment of the music audience and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" became a song every bar band has to know. But Wiki says it's sold 13 million, which isn't bad.
They were once callled "post-punk," whatever that's supposed to mean.

From a musicological perspective I understand why they were--and might still be--classified as punk: they're not very accomplished musicians. The structure of their songs is very simple, nobody in the entire band can improvise, and their dynamics are of the bonehead AC/DC style, created by simply having one or more instruments stop playing. "American Idiot" illustrates all of those points: it's only got three chords, the solo is simply a restatement of the melody of the bridge, and dynamic drama is achieved by letting the guitar play alone.

They lose the punk crowd because Billy Joe has a pleasant voice and sings well, and their songs are very melodic. There's not enough speed, noise and anger, and they keep cranking out mainstream-style material like "Wake Me Up when September Comes."
    Every generation eventually grows up.

all of "Boards of Canada" songs

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG9LUSf_qK8

Boards of Canada songs have subliminal messages in them, I noticed that their songs match in many ways the music recorded from brain waves, it has the same amplitude change. In addition to that Boards of Canada songs were made by two followers of 7th day Adventists (a religion I was once deeply part of ... and still feel I am) their names are Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin and their are from Scotland meanwhile their group title was inspiration from National Film Boards of Canada agency.

In this particular song "1969 in the sunshine" the words that the woman speaks are:

Although not a follower of hseroK divaD, she's a devoted Branch Davidian

    1969 in the sunshine

hserok Divad is a backwards name for David Koresh, a sect of a Branch Davidian branch, of a 7th day Adventist church.

I myself agree to this message as well.

Please tell us something about one of these songs so we can make an educated guess as to whether we might like them. No one has enough time to follow every URL that pops up in our correspondence every day.

    Queer by Garbage

Growing up we weren't allowed to say queer (it was derogatory), so this song was scandalous to me.

    Part of the lyrics

Hey boy, take a look at me
Let me dirty up your mind
I'll strip away your hard veneer
And see what I can find

    The queerest of the queer
    The strangest of the strange
    The coldest of the cool
    The lamest of the lame
    The numbest of the dumb
I hate to see you here
    You choke behind a smile
    A fake behind the fear
    The queerest of the queer..
