is it possible to see the end of a rainbow? like right in front of you, or your car maybe? that had never happened to me before, and i didn't think it could for some reason. maybe that's why they hide that pot of gold there.

but on our way home from canada, we were driving across a bridge over one of the great lakes...i think it was superior wisconsin. and there was a huge rainbow in the sky, that "ended" right in front of our car! i could see it clearly between the car immediately in front of and to the left of our car. it remained there as we traveled across the bridge.

    is that weird?

    it was cool!

that was the trip i took with rjr6, and he proposed to me that week. on the way up, it was the last week in july, so probably around the 23rd or 24th, we saw 3 or 4 fireworks displays...all in illinois i think. i was surprised because it wasn't a holiday to my knowledge. then while we were at the lake, we must have seen at least 10 rainbows that week. one day, two rainbows side by side. that was cool too. and then on the way home, the end of a rainbow was right in front of our car all the way across that bridge.

you know me, i took it as a sign from god.

Rainbows can appear very close at times depending on the atmospheric conditions (water droplet density and location with respect to observer etc.)

You cannot actually stand at the end of a rainbow, it's an optical effect, and you will notice when you see one the Sun is always behind you and the rainbow in front.

If you keep moving towards the 'end' the optical effect will simply fade away and stop.

But then it's par for the course that Lori interprets something mundane as validation of her insanity.

Are you saying that people cannot see the end of rainbows? I have seen a rainbows end, not sure if this is what you are talking about.

phlog, i was referring to the op.

so what has surprised the op is not the there was an end (although he\she mentions seeing the end) but that it was so close? or both?

If it is that it was close then i suggest an optical illusion associated with the actual distance of the rainbow. essentiually the eyes were playing tricks on him\her.

She was crossing a bridge over a lake, if there was enough mist and the sun was shining at the right angle she'd see a "Close rainbow" until there wasn't enough mist - the end of the bridge.

that was it. the rainbow was in between our car and the car in front of us the whole way across. that car was white so i could see the colors against it very clearly.

    it was exciting.

My tolerance for abuse of peoples beliefs is rapidly waning. If you want to discuss the merits and flaws of spirituality, there are more appropriate subfora for that debate.

We're all supposed to be mature adults here, and this is the Earth Science sub forum.

Surely we're mature enough to discuss the questions raised in the opening post without lambasting someone for their lifestyle choices and effectively proselytizing?

I'm asking nicely, end it now, please.
