I don't think I can answer that one. I have no idea which way I'd actually go in such a situation, whether I would freak and beg for my life or accept death... I don't even know morally which I would choose if I was given a lot of time to think about it. Morally I believe in risking one's life for the chance to save others, but I don't really know what I think about definitely choosing one life over another. Just as I could not choose if it were two others I had to choose between while I was safe. Actually I think the latter choice would be easier...

I like to think I'd die and save that mother.

 

If I was that mother standing next to you, I'd tell you to take the feces out of your pockets and fling it at the gunman's eyes. Then do a roundhouse.

There are ways to justify these things. We can tell ourselves 'if i let this gunman kill me now then how will i get the chance to kill him later?' or 'i have to stay alive to kill him to prevent him from killing others' etc.

For sure. Like, what if I was on the brink of creating energy from rainbows - would I sacrifice my own life and surrender that knowledge and research for the sake of keeping a child's mommy alive? Would Tesla have been the better person for saving a child or preserving his own life?

Everyone's got a purpose packed destiny with a Glock to their face...for them that can see past that momentary delusion and bite the bullet - congratulations.
