i'm not entirely surely what this means, but it sounds kinda like some curious statements i've made about aliens which have people scratching their heads, wondering whether or not i'm for real, i.e. it just doesn't really say much of anything.

yeah, that rubbing knocking stones together and shit and making fire--gotta go!

oh? are you sure? well, let's pretend that we'll hold all the supposed acts and actions of "theism" accountable for theists and the acts and actions of "science" for scientists, 'kay? stupid, but we'll pretend.

theists (qua theism): crusades, all that shit--i really don't need to enumerate all the abominations done in the name of religion, do i?

scientists (qua science): weapons of mass destruction which have been used; countless technologies which seem to effectively make extinct, uh, how many species of plant and animal life every single day?; i could go on, but why bother?

i think it is clear that on a numbers basis that scientists are the only people seriously concerned with killing one another (unless you aren't counting animals and stuff?), right?

can you please learn to make distinctions between, you know, "theism," "theists," and shit like that; otherwise, frankly, you just don't make any fucking sense. oh,and while you're at it--how 'bout reformulating the OP for everybody so that it actually makes some sense?

    oh really???? very interesting.

whatever, dude. start making some sense, please.

There is a delete button: Click "edit" next to the post you wish to edit or delete, and in the lower right corner of the edit window, there are the options Save, Go Advanced, Delete and Cancel.

And the ability to reach a goal will be seriously obstructed by unclear language...

Although offtopic, I'll respond to this:

Actually, I chose "glaucon" because he's a concise flippant bastard.

true, but this is sometimes problematic for, say, the non-essentialists among us. in striving for clarity we sometimes effectively predetermine the outcome, rendering the argument somewhat pointless. not saying that we oughtn't strive for this clarity, just that we should be mindful... and if we were really all that clear, mightn't such philosophical problems just vanish anyways?

I swear you, Parmalee and LG are the most easily swayed. Religious philosophers more interested in syntax than counterpoint. I know why you have to defend religious philosophy but I'm not sure you do.

Last nite I decided that one must think like a theist first to fully comprehend its primitivity. I can't tell you how hard that was, especially when not used to lowering my standards. I tried but it's very difficult so maybe I got a little too outlandish. So what? I don't know how you guys do it.

I lingered here for a while trying to decide what to type, eventually concluding that an outrageous claim was needed, because the OP wasn't enough and I thought it would be. Nothing like condemning theists for all the world's problems to get them riled up. If you provide theists with enough fodder then they will wallow up to the trough. It's good for them to feed off of ridiculous claims, in fact its their lifeblood.

You guys responded like champions. For me to go out and claim theists are doing all the killing in this world, well it simply isn't my style. Honestly, do you really think I believe that? Kudos for jumping in to defend or at least mock your attacker, not that it proves anything

However I stand by the last line, the one where religion doesn't belong in modern society. You buffoons, I wasn't talking about today's society. As long as religion abounds there is no modern. Atheism is new wave contemporary thinking, ready to take its place in a modern world.

well, i'll just let this speak for itself--i think it does a damn fine job without a running commentary from the "peanut gallery."

So it is hard for you to think and comprehend something, but you know 'it' is primitive. We are to take this as a clear statement that you are judging something you do not understand.

So this thread was intended to rile up theists and not an effort to put forth and discuss ideas.

    1) please stop the ad homs.
    2) modern society is a phrase that general refers to industrial society. That is how the phrase is used in academic circles. Unless it is referring to modern history, which goes even further back in time. So it would not only include the present, it would include the 20th century also. Hence the term post-modern can even include portions of the 20th century, and certainly can refer to the current state of certain things. The only buffoonery I can think of was that people thought you were using the term correctly.

Often when I get going I use the word religion when I really mean theism or a derivative of it. Sorry about the confusion and apologize for the insult.

I tested the waters and found much sensitivity. I'll do it again someday.

You know, when I first wrote the thread I thought for sure someone would challenge my general statement that theism is primitive, not a maybe or a possibility but genuine affirmative. It just seemed like everyone either accepted it or pondered it. Maybe I missed where someone called me on it(I don't read them all) but all in all there didn't seem to be much disputing it. I felt somewhat uncomfortable about that but at least I didn't have to prove it...all I had on my side of the argument was that the past correlates to primitive times but it seems it was enough I guess.

There were some calls for it to be defined. I took it primarily as a synonym for 'bad' on your part. In your previous post you said you do not understand it. If you make a clear statement of what it is, should that become possible, this will give people a chance to disagree with the content, rather than the sentiment.

i'm a theist? that's also news to me.

regardless, i didn't take that as an insult, just a misconception. a psychiatrist, in a note to a neurologist which i was not intended to read, once remarked that i exhibited a striking degree of "religiosity." at first i was confused, but then came to understand that the term does not necessarily denote being "religious" (in that theistic sense, i guess), but rather just an unusual tendency to over-ascribe "meaning" to virtually everything, including the most innocuous, irrelevant things. kinda went against my nihilistic tendencies, i thought.

    but i digress...

And everyone who uses that as a negative term needs to meet a late stage Buddhist meditator or someone else who views scientists as mystics who believe in selves and other hallucinated entities. Occam's Razor doesn't stop where one gets comfy - which is not an assertion that Occam's Razor is 'correct', whatever that would mean.

Doreen, this is the internet. I'm not standing right in front of you nor am I in conversation with you over a cup of coffee. Words stimulate the imagination, provoking thoughts, analytical and design. I am a disembodied page on a PC monitor, I could be anything or anybody. Hell I could be god for all you know. This is entertainment, a screenplay in which the cast is unseen. Of the countless threads and posts recorded in this one forum alone, how many have actually reversed the thoughts of one of the members?

Let's put things in perspective, since people's words are more persuasive when delivered in person then the forum can never supply this aspect of human communication. Yet there is enough imagination in everyone to act it out.

I guess its difficult to tell when you are actually being a moron as opposed to merely pretending to be one.

Ever thought how much our desired/projected personality guides our reasoning?
How we sometimes use strong statements in order to appear cool, or accomplish some personal objective which is not directly stated in what we actually say?
Psychotic Episode here is a good example. His name and his posting content and style always make me wonder what on earth he is up to.

I don't think I raised the issue of changing the thoughts of others. I was pointing out that you claimed you did not understand something that you categorized and judged, which is ironic given that the post this was done in is critical of certain kinds of thinking. I see now that you view this more purely as provocation and that's fine. But there are other ways to post and people do this here also. Now that I know I can react to your posts knowing you are not really trying to make sense so much.

If you really wanted to insult me then why didn't you called me something below the status of religious philosopher?

Actually it wasn't my intention, but since you bring it up, I thought it was obvious you were already there.

I understand that when a spiritual guide gets taken litterally, it can cause some obvious problems. History knows it too.

I also understand that everything we need to know comes from within ourselves, so we don't need theism to find what we need. So I understand why some might think Theism is 'primitive'.

However we all find our answers in different places, and it shouldn't effect you if someone believes something that you don't believe as long as people stay respectful of others. POTF has a couple lines I gotta use from one of their songs because I can't think of a better way of saying it:
"It's whatever makes you see, makes you believe, and forget about the premonition we need to concieve..."

If you don't believe in spirituality, well that's your choice, but don't ask me for proof in something spiritual, if you need proof, you'll need to find your own! I don't need proof in the form of physical evidence, I just needed to understand the multiple sides that every truth has.

The only things I really needed to learn was it's okay to go after what you want as long as you don't disrespect others along the way but life is a grind and nothing comes easy so you have to work for what you want. Also that Love doesn't have conditions, we aren't here to judge or to look for blame, although if I see disrespect, I'll do whatever I think is neccessary to prevent actions that are harmful to others - however I don't worry about the things that are beyond my control and most harmful actions are beyond my control, cause I only control me!

As for the Sun, although it's a bit off topic, I saw some cracks on the Sun in this thread. Of coarse peolple have looked to the Sun at times - we need the Sun, it gives us both light and warmth. Furthermore many seem to go directly into the light in the afterlife which some believe are becoming a part of the Sun. So although I myself would much rather stay in the comfortable areas around the Sun, I have nothing but Love and respect for the Sun and all it's life! But I also Love and respect the cold space too, without the cold space the Sun would be overwhelming!

Trying to apply only Logical thinking to Theism is ridiculas. It's like studying science with fiction!

    The real question should be:

Are logical minds so one dimensional that they don't see the possibilities of fantastical realities that exist within and/or beyond the physical?
