I think Star Trek "jumps" into another dimension (subspace) in which everything is smaller, and jumps back to normal space at corresponding destination points. That's how the books put it down as.
And couldn't they scoop up gases from the gas giant and use it to power their generators, a la bussard ramscoop ?
Hyperspace i think works on a similar level.
    Technical points aside.
I hated Darkness. Way too much teen romance, lack in plot advancement. Didn't reveal much else about the characters, other than that potential mutiny bit. Didn't explain what happened to the shuttle that dropped off in the previous episode.

    etc.

There's a TNG episode where Geordi Laforge explains it in much the way I did. No "other" dimension. They can still see stars and be hit by debris in their path. In "The Motion Picture" the Enterprise's trajectory causes it to nearly crash into a small celestial object.

Actually if you plug in a velocity greater than the speed of light (i.e FTL) into Einstein's equations you get a negative answer (or at least the real part of the answer is a negative value, but then there is also a imaginary part to wonder about). If they were going FTL under Einstein's rules theyshould be traveling backward in time relative to Earth.

People did once seriously consider FTL particles and looked for them because Einstein's seem to allow for them, though no such "tachyons" were ever found.

That said, scifi almost always uses "magic" FTL.

No, there is a loophole in Einsteins speed limit.

And that is this "Nothing IN space can travel faster than the speed of light"

There is the loophole, nothing in space can travel at FTL, ut space itself CAN, and it has, early on after the big bang the universe actually expanded faster than the speed of light.

So the solution to the FTL problem is that rather than move your ship through space, move the space around your ship.

Think about it this way, put your finger on a globe, put it on New York and move it to China, as fast as you can WITHOUT spinning the globe or taking your figner off the globe.

Now put your figner on NY, and instead of moving your finger, spin the globe really fast. That is the idea behind warp speed.

Which is to say, if you cannot go to the mountaintop, make the mountain come to you.

It reminds me of the episode of the Black Adder where he fell in love with his manservant, Bob. The witch whom he visited for advice game him three foolproof solutions to his problem.

WISE WOMAN: Three paths are open to you: three cunning plans to cure thine ailment.
    BLACKADDER: Good!
WISE WOMAN: The first is simple: kill Bob.
    BLACKADDER: Never!
WISE WOMAN: Then try the second: kill yourself.
BLACKADDER: Hmm . . . and the third?
WISE WOMAN: The third is to ensure that no one else ever knows.
BLACKADDER: Ah that sounds more like it. How?
WISE WOMAN: Kill everybody in the whole world! [cackles madly]
    BLACKADDER: Uh-huh. [Exit]

    They do.
In one of the very early episodes (the pilot?) they engage the drives at "Time Warp Factor whatever". I.e. they shifted the ship in time as it moved FTL in space to make sure it kept "on-track" with the rest of the universe.
Later episodes dropped the word "time" from the phrase "warp factor".

According to other sci fi writers, various possibilities of FTL experiments include,
Being everywhere at once, due to the speed of light being constant, or jumping into an alternate universe where light isn't constant.

Huh. That explains why one book states that travelling faster than Warp 5 could cause space-time entropy.

The senator's daughter is rapidly being reduced to cheesecake status. Last week the put her on a shower scene (funny, Ely found the showers, yet we did not see his shower scene...), and this week, about 48 hours after the death of her father, she's proving that promiscuity cannot be contained to the Milky Way alone.

Does anyone else feel that her and the lieutenant's relations ship became intense rather fast? Near as I can recall she spoke with him in depth once, about her father, and now there's some sort of anguish at their parting. Didn't they just meet?

One good thing is that Ely has been moved into the role of her "friend" even though she seems to hang out with him far more than Scott. That is at least realistic, given that he is not at all aggressive about letting his feelings be known for her, and schlubs generally need to go the extra mile to get anywhere in situations like that one.

Pretty much this is where the Ely's of the world wind up:

They've gone for the 50-50 split of teen romance and special effects.

Yah, the events that took place over the past 4 episodes should have been shortened into 2 episodes. I dont wanna watch their whining and crying for the next season. I wanna see something cool.

This latest episode was a bit predictable. I mean, who really thought the ship would crash into the sun and be destroyed?

I am a little annoyed with this whole attitude that "these are the "wrong people". I mean, these people were good enough for the research station and the whole purpose of the research station was to eventually use the stargate to jump to where ever it went. So now that they've gone thru, suddenly they're all a bunch of incompetents? Dr Rush is the only capable scientist? The second best is a college dropout/video gamer?

SG1 had a core of 4 people, yet between them Carter and Daniel Jackson seemed to be able to figure out whatever alien tech they came across. SGU has the staff of an entire research station; and yet no one seems to know what they're doing?

Ah well, it's stlll better than Sanctuary....

I'll say!! They got a little somethin for my personal tastes. Like 7 of 9 for Voyager, I'll be awaiting every glimpse of this body they're willing to shoot for me. LOL

Also, I like how in the face of a possible sun-burned catastrophe, the young couple take a last-ditch effort to procreate. LOL

I've been keeping up with it patiently. I thought last week's episode was nicely done and it answered some of the questions that were posed earlier in this thread. (Oct 23: No spoiler in case you're as slow about spooling off your DVR as I am.)

But I wish they'd found a way to hang onto the characters from SG-1. Nobody has their star power. Poor Michael Shanks played a bit part for a few weeks on Burn Notice, and then they killed him off.

It's too soon to tell whether this series will be better than Atlantis. It started out okay but then it ran out of ideas and they were just wandering around the galaxy aimlessly looking for ways to pose their hottie non-earthborn team members. At the end it became as inscrutable as Earth: Final Conflict. I gave up and quit watching.

As for the serious discussions of the "science" in Stargate, you must be joking. This is good old-fashioned space opera: all the aliens speak English!

    To paraphrase the old gem...

If my starship is flying into a star, something is getting fucked. If that thing is hot, nubile and willing, so much the better.

    Theres.....an interesting set of priorities

But the only way to make this series entertaining is if they make it a knock off of star trek voyager.

Thats the only way to do it, and theyve gotta take control of the ship.
