How does this thing work? Is it just an expensive gimmick?

Pretty cool, though butt ugly. Not you - the fan.

 

That is a clever trick all he is using is a venturi really the Bladed fan in in the base of the unit that is unless he uses a vaccum pump like a fish tank pump for the supply and the Bue Friut Loop is the venturi.

I think it is pretty cool. I don't think it looks ugly. It looks more sleek then a regular fan.

I REALLY want the Dyson Ball Vacuum...but it is a little too pricey.

Yeah that is a nice fan.
They make everything of cheap plastic now, so you have to keep replacing it.

 

Or not buy it, and pay more for something that will last longer and cost less in the long run.

It uses an impeller.
Which does in fact work on the same principal as a fan, they are the sort of things you find in water pumps, and electric dams, in order to force the liquid, air or whatever through it enters the center, and the force of it spinning forces the air/water out the sides at high pressure.

While technically speaking its not a fan per say, it is far from being as high tech as you might think, impellers are nothing new.

 

Dude, the 'fan' is just part of the Dyson design. Overall it moves 15 times more air than the air pushed through the fan. That means the fan can be smaller, quieter, and use less power. That is the whole point of the exercise.

 

I used one of these and found it to cumbersome.
