Okay, a similar thread already exists, created by me but with another name that is somewhat disparaging. So, I watched the premier last night and it was pretty good. Not amazing. To be sure there were some disappointments (Dr. Rush and that stupid genius kid they brought along) but there were also some pretty interesting characters (surprisingly enough, Colonel Young and Lt. Scott). The ship is really cool looking and the premise is very interesting (and, different enough from Voyager which suffered from being to antiseptic looking). ~String
I liked Dr. Rush, in that he seemed to have the most complex character shown (he seems to both desire power and yet is obsessed with his own scientific curiosities. He strikes me as sinister in a way that reminds me of Dr. Smith from Lost in Space without the charicaturishness of that character. The kid-gamer-genius character seemed underwhelming to me as he seemed to have no skills other than having solved the video game puzzle. The acting, overall, left me flat, and the plot was damned annoying. Seriously for want of an ability to close a door a character had to die? There was no other wat to seal that timy opening? No "pole" could be fashied to poke the putton that controls that door. Frankly, if they cannot figure out how to close a fucking door, then they are doomed. because the rest of the technology on that ship is only going to be *more* complicated than that. But of course they are not doomed, and their inability to seal that door is just going to stand out as an anomaly relative to many far more complex technical challenged they will have to face down the road. I'm still giving it a chance, but the first episode left me to seriously consider selecting the "cancel series recording" option on my DVR/

I liked it. It could have been better, but I think it has great potential. I am a huge SG-1 fan. Not quite so enthused about Atlantis, but it's safe to say that I am predisposed to liking anything Stargate. What we have here is Atlantis, Star Trek: Voyager and Sliders all rolled into one, with just a little Battlestar Galactica thrown in. I suspect however that after the next episode, people are going to be comparing it to Sliders more than anything else. This will be obvious to anyone who was paying attention to the circumstances surrounding the trip through the Stargate during the final minutes of the first episode.

They tried to make Dr. Rush a complex character, like Baltar from BSG, but honestly... it was sad. He's the most boring character on the show. I was completely not engaged in the show. The acting was pretty horrible too. Especially the LT... wow. I really had high hopes for the show... But it's really, really, really, not looking good. Yuck. T
You forgot Lost in Space. Pandaemoni caught it. I caught it. The only character missing from Lost in Space is the robot. Odds on those cute little flying balls start transmitting the equivalent of "Danger, Will Robinson!” in some upcoming episode.
Finally watched it on HULU. After reading the remarks here, I expected it to be horrible. I was pleasantly surprised. It was Ok. We'll see how it matures. PS I've got to figure out how to connect my laptop to my TV. There is an input on the back that says "PC". I wonder if it's that simple? It sucks watching a show on my 15 inch monitor with tiny little speakers when my 50 inch plasma with surround sound is sitting right there!
Searching to fix carbon dioxide scrubbers? Hello? It is an unmanned ship meaning there would have no need for the ship to generate carbon dioxide that the scrubbers would be working to remove.
Which prompts the question: If it was an unmanned ship, why have an oxygen atmosphere waiting for the SG personnel? Oxygen is horribly corrosive. If you wanted to keep your unmanned ship operating as long as possible, you should fill it with something inert, like argon. The SG people should have arrived, and promptly all suffocated.
awww man you guys didnt have the Spoiler Alert thing and now I know how the whole thing ends!! hahah j/k Um... should have a poll maybe how many people think its a worthy series to follow and whatever. I'll catch the 1st and see if there's something that can carry this series long enough to get interested in it.
If I recall correctly, Destiny was designed as a gateway ship between the Milky Way and whatever newly explored galaxy it was in. It was a mobile Stargate essentially. Obviously it makes sense then to have a habitable atmosphere. And yes, the Alterans breathed oxygen. Though kmguru brings up a better point on why there was CO2 when no one was onboard to have been converting the viable O2 into the CO2. I bet, however, even if it was a plothole, I'm sure they'd fix it later on by stating some other group of people found their way aboard, considering the ship had substantial battle damage. Practically anything organic other than plants uses CO2 in one reaction or another. Hell, CO2 is one of the most common bi products of any sort of reaction organic or not. It could be that the ship has some sort of small ecosystem like a large green house, which makes sense considering how large it is and the fact that it'll need to sustain extended habitation. Hell, CO2 could even be the biproduct of certain parts of the ship deteriorating away.
Since it is a smart ship, the gate area could maintain an oxygen atmosphere or only after the gate activates from a remote location. Rest of the habitable area could be nitrogen or argon filled and exchanged when people arrive. If they had gravity independent cameras, why not robots. Even FarScape had robot for the organic spaceship. Do the writers never seen FarScape? What about food and water? Are we going to find a BioSphere in the Ship soon before the Earth people starve to death? There are too many holes. But hopefully the writers will answer them someway. Babylon 5 had viewer feedback and adjusted stories to keep them plausible and consistent. Let us see...
If you look at the ship, you see the stargate, and close by is a viewing room which you could probably correctly guess is near the bridge tower of the ship. That means that the amount they have explroed is probably around 20% of the entire ship, all weve seen are hallways and small rooms, one shuttlepod, one dome deteriorating away (which I remind you that from the outside of the ship you can clearly see a second dome seemingly undamaged) They probably have deactivated most of the robots for power reasons, if your building a ship meant to operate that long, than youd have floating repair bots, but of course those are energy intensive so they have been deactivated. The cameras are so small they probably run on internal power I laughed so hard.
Please deal lord let them be done with this "malfunctioning ship" snoozefest soon. It was a better episode this week, imo, but they are spending an awful lot of time developing characters that I don't care about because the show itself has not yet been made interesting. Give me a reason to be interested in the drama first, and then start the characterization, I say. Even the first episodes of Lost had the creature, and the island was presented as being far more mysterious and interesting than the Destiny, despite the notion of a "tropical desert island" being far more prosaic than "intergalactic spaceship." Would that this were "'Lost' in space"...so far it's not even as good as "Pigs in Space."
