You know, its amazing how amateur historians look over the fact that for 3 someodd years the war was a brutal tie near France, and it was a mere coincidence that in 1917 that the allie's forces magically grew so powerful that they steamrolled over the German forces in merely a single war.

But of course that is a mere coincidence, of course the biggest participating country with the biggest mechanical industries, massive resource income, and the mere fact that they were totally fresh and had taken no damage had nothing to do with the decimation of German forces.

WRONG! the Allies didn't steamroll over the Germans. In fact Germany was winning because they didn't have to worry about the eastern front anymore (Remember the Russian revolution?). They sent all the troops west and got as far as Paris. Then a German U-Boat sunk the Lusitania killing 1200(128 Americans) 1915. 2 years later we declare war on Germany. Are troops were "green" or inexperienced. They charged machine guns and did other risky things, but got all their objectives done. So much so that British and French said "let the Americans go in".

    Nope.
The Germans used tanks as an excuse, but that's it. See your own comment about "amateur historians".

Tanks had no real effect on the war.

Ah okay, thought you were saying something about the weapon itself.

    Missed the wording?
"The first year or so of the war was fairly mobile"

    Easy: not enough knowledge.

    "Steamrollered" is hardly the word.

So make your mind up, was it the US or was it tanks?

    WWI Online.

Dynamic battlefield. What happens, matters, and is permanent. Your alter ego dies, you start from scratch. No save games, no cheats, no spawn points close to action(supply should be modeled even).

    Planes trains automobiles and Tanks.

After one side wins, award some goodies to those you survived/ did well and do it all over again.

I'm sorry. I in no way meant that as though the British and French couldn't handle it.(You're British or French?) I meant it as the Americans were kind of like pawns in a chess game. You send them in to take the punishing. As I said I didn't mean to offend you.

WWI British Officers tend to have been "Born" into the role, this was one of the main downfalls of the British Army of that period because while those offers were born into the role, they weren't necessarily any good at commanding, in fact they were known to cause unrest within the troops. That's the main reason why at that period of time people could be shot for cowardice not just desertion.

It was these Officers that thought they would "Show the Huns" by walking in vast numbers across no-mans land as more of a psychological taunt, they were use to the rifles of the day and weren't prepared for the Machinegun the Germans had in their trenches. This is where such sayings as "Over the top" come from because that was the command that every young working class draftee dreaded to hear, to be ordered "over the top"

Ah, a fellow war fan. The Russians used a similiar tactic. "Traitors and cowards will be shot!" If you watch the movie Enemy at the Gates(movie about a Russian sniper during WW2) they gun their own retreating men down with a machine gun.

It was the combination of the US and tanks.

Also, Omega, while the US did send soldiers, by no means did pershing use give them to the British officers for them to gladly use as cannon fodder. Typically the British and the French asked for the Americans to be sent in because they knew they couldnt do it by themselves.

Actually, it's because they'd absorbed enough punishment for an entire generation, fed.

Should probably add the wiki link. WWI Casualties

(remember if you don't trust Wiki as a primary source [which you shouldn't] you can always look through the References at the bottom

    Quite so - thanks Stryder.

Jesus, look at the Serbia, Romanians and Ottomans. Serbia I can understand, but Romania? And aside from his dishonourable Lord Fisher's exercise on the beach, what were the Ottomans up to? I assume they're not counting the Armenian Massacre in the roundup of the period.

    Nope. Read some real history.

Tanks had shock value and "many tanks"? They generally got wasted in "penny packet attacks" and were mechanically unreliable.

It would have happened without tanks but not without the US.

Yes, you are right that it wouldve worked without tanks.

But you have to admit, it wouldve been much, much more dificult without the tanks.

The tanks didnt serve as a weapon of destruction against the axis powers more like a tool. An analogy being that you have a river full of crocodiles that will kill you if you try and swim across, so what do you and your friends do? You build a bridge so you stay high and dry.

Sure the bridge wasnt 100% necessary, but the only other way is to swim, and out of all your friends that got across, probably only one would survive, and hed be in such horrible shape he couldnt get much done.

Tanks in WW1 operated on the same basic idea.

But every history book always remembers the fact that WW1 was the advent of tank warfare.

Oh don't forget about chemical warfare. Chlorine gas, mustard gas, and other such poisons.

After 1915 it was Canadian troops that were used for the initial shock attacks. France was near mutiny and the UK had exhausted it's whole professional force(The old contemptibles) and most of the "Pals Divisions" in those fucking retarded Somme attacks.

Into late 1916 and early 1917 is was Canadian and ANZAC troops used hammer and tongs up and down the front. Germans basically just paid attention to where these two Corps maneuvered to see where an attack was coming. Occasionally the Allies would feint them, knowing this...

Into 1918 yes the Americans were used for big pushes after they got some humility and caution from an initial pasting by the Germans upon first arriving in late 1917 full of piss and vinegar.

No, for the same reason I would not play Silent Hunter 2, (U Boat). I will not sink, or kill, my own 'side'. I study U Boats amongst other aspects of WW2, these were mostly ordinary men doing a very hazardous job, but not in a game, no.
