Only a small sect of Jews in Beit Shemesh, Israel, whose practices can be considered cultish, wear the "frumka". The "frumka" is the invention of Bruriah Keren, a fifty-four year old mother of twelve who is suspected of serious child abuse and neglect. The "frumka" is not popular amongst Jews. However, Jewish women in Conservative and Orthodox sects do follow Tzniut, a term which has evolved to define rules for dress amongst women. Its rules, derived from Halakha, require both men and women to dress modestly (for women, clothes must cover the elbows and knees, and according to some Rabbis, it is compulsory for all married Jewish women to cover their hair).
Apparently Jews in Arab lands did wear a frumka before: Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! http://books.google.com/books?id=bFN2ismyhEYC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q=&f=false
Ha. I'm wondering if the frumka is an adaptation to Middle Eastern culture or whether like the hayk, there is a history of Jewish women wearing full cover.
Not just Jews and Muslims who wear full dresses like this . Christinians ladies used to cover evrything but that was a very long ago .
there's also this http://www.biblicalresearchreports.com/headcoveringstyle.php on christian women's wear.
Amazing. Horst quotes scripture that announces there is no such custom of headcovering in the churches of God and puts it forward as supporting head coverings for Christian woman. lets have a look at the supposed supporting scripture and see how it is actually standing against women wearing head coverings while praying. 1 Corinthians 11 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. 3But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. 5But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved. 6For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered. 7For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8For man is not from woman, but woman from man. 9Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. 10For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord. 12For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God. 13Judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? 15But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering. 16But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God. So as clear as Day, If a woman has long hair she already has a head covering. It is a Glory to her. What was the "custom" the one they never had nor the churches of God? Head coverings that was the custom they did not have. The whole point of the section was to provide an answer to the question of head covering and the answer is clear we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God. All Praise The Ancient of Days
Or both. Quite possibly. Female subjugation is closely associated with earlier pregnancy and greater frequency of childbirth, both - you get a lot more children that way.
Because their societies did not want to give up their traditions. And the thinking of men goes something like this. " modest dressing means covering up skin, therefore the more skin we cover the more modest/ righteous we are" So it goes from modest dress to head coverings to the full body tent with a gauze over the eyes to woman being kept/keeping themselves in houses all their lives. It's modesty/self righteousness one-upmanship. Like a person who has a prescription for a necessary but potentially dangerous medicine. The rules are strict. 1 pill a day for 6 months. He starts taking the pills, after 5 days he starts to feel better. Then his thinking goes " If one pill a day makes me feel better then 2 pills a day will make me feel even better, faster. He starts taking 2 pills a day and dies within a week of toxic trauma. All Praise The Ancient Of Days
Not in all cultures. But my question is why did showing skin become equated with being less modest? Whats the connection?
Human migration brought about the knowledge of different head dresses. Colthing styles and hair styles are chic type things. Equating modesty to the style came about later.
