This is not a stupid thread . We are talking about kids who are the most valuable assets to humans . If you think this is stupid then just do not bother reading it . Did you notice how much trouble we have in all societies with kids these days ?. Surely we need solutions .

There are solutions, why do you ignore them in favor of beatings?

:bugeye: then why so gung-ho to assault them?
I think people who assault their children should have no problem being assaulted by their children when they are elderly and not doing as they are told. What goes around comes around?

So much for respecting one's elders. Something far too many kids today whether they were/ are spanked or not are lacking.

Yeah nice attitude there Orleander. So if you smacked the bottom of your toddler a few times they have the right to beat you down when you are a senior after you raised and supported them most of their lives.

    Cutsie,I agree totally....

When I was little I had to call the neighbors Mr or Mrs ___________. My mom
didn't think it was appropriate to call them by their first name.

We were taught to respect our elder's be it teachers, neighbors family members.
Today kids have no problem telling teachers or anyone that might step in to tell them they are doing something they shouldn't to Fuck Off!

We were also taught to respect other peoples property like not walk across their lawns or litter on the street. Today kids go to McDonalds and toss their garbage out the windows while laughing like it's a big joke. If I ever caught my kids doing that they would be in BIG TROUBLE.

We live by a creek and they put up a sign with the name of the Creek with a map of how far it runs and such. It was mounted on a post equivalent to a stop sign. When I went out walking the other night I saw the post was broken in half and the sign thrown in the creek.

I'm all for respecting your elders but that should go two ways.

Why should I respect someone just because they're older than me, even if they are an ass?

I automatically respect people unless they somehow don't deserve it. But if they do something to not deserve it I'll withdraw that respect whether they are 16 or 60.

I was getting food at the health shop a few days ago and I was talking to the shopkeeper and mentioned that my mother was going on holiday and she said 'I bet the place will be wrecked when she gets back, will it?'

I asked 'Um...why would it be wrecked?'

'Well, you'll probably have a party and trash the place, won't you?'

In actual fact I mostly hate parties. But no, since I'm 19, it was apparently a fair assumption that I am destructive and lawless.

Sorry. I'm not respecting someone with that attitude just because they're older than me.

I was taught that too. I used to think that kids only yelled at their parents on tv, I didn't know kids actually did that in reality until I was almost in high school. When I see kids doing it, I always cringe. And their parents are totally okay with it for only God knows what reasons.

The kid gets hit because they've done something wrong. Tell them what happens in the long run of what they do, their awareness is what matters most!

That's what I'm talking about. Doesn't matter if an old lady called you an onslaught of terrible names, you just take it on the chin. You don't have to like them or respect them. But disrespect is just terrible. I just use the old mantra I was taught in elementary school. "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all."

Why should I, though? I'm a human being, she's a human being. Her age alone does not make her worth more than me, or more worthy of being treated well.

There's an old lady in my village who is horribly racist about immigrants and black people, should I tolerate that because she's old?

No. I don't care how old you are, you spew racism in front of me, I use my verbal scalpels.

That's terrible, but good for you. I personally would never do that. Whether it's an old lady spouting racist nonsense or a little girl doing it. It's much easier to get along with people if you are respectful to everyone, regardless of how they treat you. At least that's how I was raised and I plan to raise my children the same and if I'm lucky like my parents were I'll never have to be embarrassed about my child verbally assaulting their neighbor, the old man at the gas station, teacher, boss, or worse a police officer. If you have a problem deal with it, but there is no need to be disrespectful while doing so.

If I had yelled at my Mom or told her off, I would have gotten smacked.

I hear kids mouthing off and yelling at their parent's all the time. They are usually the really spoiled ones around here who their parents buy them everything. I shake my head and think how stupid are these parents. I don't get it either, why a parent would take that from their kid who they support and work their asses off to buy them nice things.

There is a brat across the street who just got her license. They let her take the car and she has to be home at a certain time. Apparently she is abusing it and the last few nights the parents have been yelling and telling her to get her butt in the house when she gets home. She doesn't care and just yells at them and turns up the music in the car.

That would be the fucking day in my house. If my kids acted like that when I was nice enough to loan them my car when they have only had a license a couple months this is what would happen. They would be handing over the keys and told they could WALK!

My kids respect me and when I do things for them, they thank me on their own. If I go out of my way to take them somewhere, I always get a Thanks Mom. When I cook them a nice dinner they get up from the table with their dishes and say Thanks, that was really good. In my opinion that is how it should be. To be honest when I see other kids out there, I feel so lucky to have my 2 Boys. I think however I have taught them to be like this consistently since they were toddlers and it's paid off so far. They aren't angels but I know we will never have a scene where they are telling me off in a store because I won't get them something.

Parents are to blame for these disrespectful kids because they are letting them get away with it in their own homes. If you don't respect your parents and they let you get away with it with no consequence, why the hell would they respect strangers on the street.

I have raised my kids to have the same respect I was taught growing up. They are 13 and 8 and I can honestly tell you that I never worry about such things from them.

I didn't say I would be disrespectful or abusive.

Just that I stand up for myself. I usually do it reasonably using logic rather than abuse, but I stand up for myself, whether the person acting the asshole is 16 or 60.

What if the parent is verbally abusive, I would say the kid would have the right to stick up for themselves.

My friend's mother frequently tells her to 'shut the fuck up' when she's trying to say something.

I think respect should go two ways, either everyone in the household is allowed to yell or curse or no one is.

Well, I don't think any parent should be telling their kid to shut the fuck up, that's terrible. I yell at my kids's sometimes but I have NEVER sworn at them.

I was basically talking about house holds that not abusive. What you are talking about is a whole other can of worms.

The point of parents is to guide their children to a successful life, in which they could become parents themselves. Obviously abusive behavior is negligent to such goals.
